Dandong, Benxi, Dalian, Shanghai Got freedom back in China DANDONG After our nice but restricted trip in North Korea (NK) it was lovely to arrive to the other side of the Korean - Chinese border, namely the town of Dandong. We arrived by train from Pyongyang (pity that it was a Russian train and not a Korean one, but whatever... )and we spent the night and next day in Dandong. The two countries are separated by a river, half of the bridge is Korea, half is China. China made a real touristic site from the closedness of NK, you can buy Korean goods near the shore (there is a huge commercial activity - both black and white - here, NK imports around USD 2 billion worth of goods from China officially). There is also a half ... read more

On Monday it became clear that there would be no lectures on Friday. This was for me the trigger to immediately book a train ticket to Dalian. I actually had this trip in mind for the long weekend after the National holiday, but it is not clear whether we really have this long weekend, so when this long weekend appeared, my choice was made very easily. Because it is not possible to book a return ticket, I decided to take the night train to Dalian and by a return ticket there at arrival (my first preference was go directly to Dandong). For the first time travelling by train, the people around me were not so curious and talkative. This made the train trip very silent. Because the train left at 21:15 and arrived at half past ... read more

Togturen tog cirka 3½ time.

Well, it's not really round two...merely just the second half of round number one I guess you could say. The summer intensive course has come to an end at Aston English school. It was a summer that I'll never forget, most undoubtedly the best summer of my life thus far. The experiences had were so vast that blogging them all will seem like an impossible task. the reason I created a blog on (here) this website is because the Chines government sensors any blogs with the top level domain that includes "blogspot.com". This way, everyone will be able to read my blog, including those in China, or anywhere else in the world that may be proxied (forbidden) ti read this site by default. A quick explanation to the name I've chosen for my blog "mrfish" -- ... read more

We were seen off on our journey by Mr. Zhong and Yun-Tian, our faithful hosts. I was remarkably sad to leave. After only a few short days I felt as though I had settled into life in Dalian. It is amazing how the generosity of others has the power to make one feel at home, even on the other side of the world. The bus ride to Dandong was roughly three hours. On the way we were treated a disturbingly violent movie involving motorcycles and Kung Fu, blaring on the TV overhead. At one point I looked out the window in the gathering darkness to see the road coated in a solid sheet of ice, and our carefree bus driver flying around a police car. Altogether it was a strange trip, and coupled with the ... read more
