I have accepted that I am the minority here. I mean come on, I'm the 14th Caucasian student enrolled at a university with 700 other international students and over 41,000 Chinese students. And I know that it should no longer come as a surprise to me that when I lift my eyes at any given moment - whether I am walking down the street, on the bus, or eating lunch - there will be at least 5 sets of eyes staring back. Still, this incessant feeling like I am under surveillance 24/7 is an odd one. I have never enjoyed being the centre of attention, but here it is inevitable. One of the first realizations that popped into my head when I first came to China was that nobody here knows me...and I will make it ... read more

The day has arrived. After traveling by two planes, one shuttle bus, one train, and one taxi (a total 22-hour journey); after wandering around the Jiangsu University campus (area of 2,030,000 square meters) aimlessly with my luggage in tow; after being denied living accommodations and then being deposited into a room with a roommate who didn't know she was about to have to endure a messy, inexperienced, immature Canadian; after attempting (but failing) to communicate with the locals who strictly speak solely Chinese, with my limited knowledge of how to say hello, goodbye, thank you, and count to 10; after struggling to pass my days without Google, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube...(the list goes on and on), using Baidu (the Chinese version of Google which lacks English translations), and eventually realizing that Yahoo works just fine; after comprehending ... read more

It’s been quite a while since our last blog… there’s a few things we’ll post in the coming days, but first a recap of the weekend before last. Along with or two friends Nate and David (a few newcomers to Changzhou!), we headed to our neighboring city to the West, Zhenjiang镇江 as we’ve been here for over eight months and never managed to get over there. All I knew about it was that it was about half the size of Changzhou and situated right on the Yangtze and was the former home of American writer Pearl Buck. I didn’t have terribly high expectations of our short day trip, but it was actually pretty cool! The first thing we did was leave catch the bullet train to the city. The ride took about 30 minutes. Once we ... read more

17November 2009 I landed in Shanghai Pudong International airport, my Indian friends studying in Jiangsu received me and gave me two choices, go to the city either by Maglev or airport bus. I chose Maglev as I have never travelled in anything that’s faster than 140km/hour. Maglev station was in the airport complex with a sign board showing “33km in 8mins”, we bought the tickets 80RMB per person for single journey( airport bus was just 22RMB) and entered the train which was guarded by two tall Chinese officers. It was not quite a journey as the train reached the destination in just 8mins with a top speed of 484km/hr passing through the suburbs of shanghai filled with flyovers and broad roads. Longyang station was the final point for the maglev from where we had to take ... read more

I think it might be best to start this post with a tiny disclaimer. . . I did not originally plan to post all of our funniest and most awkward moments of this trip for everyone to see. The stories below were originally just emails to my family as I sent home the details of our greatest adventures and our silliest mistakes! But as I shared our mishaps and misinterpretations they insisted they should be a part of our journey that I post as well. Of course in my attempts to write them out to share so much is lost! Please bear with me, and attempt to add in little things like Megan’s father’s funny little accent in story #4, and the chaos of the moment we realized we were on the wrong side of the ... read more

Our second week with our families in Zhenjiang seems to have flown past! Naturally, I am quite behind on posting this (again!), but for a very good reason, I think: We’ve been incredibly busy!!! Just as during our first week here, each of the parents took a day to share their city and those nearby with us while our sisters attended their school. On Monday morning Stephanie’s father picked the four of us up around 8:00, announcing that today we would explore Nanjing! We were very excited! It was just less than an hour-long drive to the city and many people from Zhenjiang (including Stephanie and Megan’s dads) work there, living in small Nanjing apartments during the week and returning to their homes in Zhenjiang on weekends. Yet although our first stop was within the boundaries ... read more

Well, as of today I will have spent one week with my new family in Zhenjiang, and I still cannot believe how lively and full of color my new home is! Driving through the streets we pass hundreds of vivid, open-air shops, overflowing with a medley of fruits, vegetables, and grains. In the evenings people dance on the street corners- some for entertainment, others for exercise! Zhenjiang seems to have everything you could possibly imagine in a city, yet it somehow manages to escape the industrial blandness which plagues so many urban areas! We have been incredibly fortunate in having amazing and very generous families open their homes and hearts to us! While our sisters continue to attend their classes Monday through Saturday from 7am until 9pm, our new parents kindly each take a day to ... read more

All of the Chinese delegates and our parents met at the Lao Ching Hing Restaurant in Phoenix (which has a chef from Zhenjiang!) to discuss our travel plans and try authentic Chinese food the Saturday before we left. It was nice to hear what others were packing and to share ideas on how we could communicate with our parents while we were away! We all shared tea and food on a lazy susan, and it was so nice to see that there were lots of vegetarian options!!! Stephanie's mother also made each of us a pillowcase with beautiful Chineses patterns so we could dream of Chinese adventures before we left!... read more

This was the night we learned we would be traveling to China this summer! It was the first time I met my amazing fellow delegates (from left to right): Stephanie, (myself), Michelle, and Megan, along with our wonderful coordinators, Mr. and Mrs. Showers! (Our outfits were chosen for us by last year's delegates in order to make the night more interesting. . .)... read more
