... read more

Chapter one of our five weeks of travel started with the boarding of train number T159 in Taizhou, a city 43 miles east of Yangzhou and then traveling almost due north, into the dark and cold hinterlands of China; a land only a stone’s throw from Siberia. Traveling some 1,500 miles via train makes for more than one story and coupling long travel time with tight quarters guarantees extra cultural-exchanging fun. A few observations: * Everyone, including the manliest of men, immediately changes into slippers and long underwear; save the street clothing for the streets - its train time now... * Along the way, train employees push carts down the aisles selling all sorts of treats, drinks, and toys. We had the opportunity to nearly anything under the sun - ice cream, cucumbers, strawberries, beer, noodles, ... read more

This weekend was an adventure to Harbin, 1000km towards the cold end of the thermometer from Beijing. “Cold as a witch’s tit” doesn’t really do it justice. Even layered up like a hypothermic oinion couldn’t completely keep it at bay. However the locals seem utterly impervious, especially the numerous local girls walking around in short skirts. The city itself is heavily Russian influenced. The main historical part of the city revolves around a central pedestrianised street (not a common concept in China) and feels a lot like I imagine China Town in Bucharest would. There’s a Russian orthodox cathedral, a mosque, a couple of synagogues, some Romanesque features and even the odd neo-classical column. It even has an underpass that’s clad in fake marble, as if emulating one of the “people’s palaces” of Moscow’s subway stations. ... read more

So, we have 4 months to go as I write this. Recently, I've had many conversations about the little things that are really special about Daqing/China. As we've all been here for a while we've all noted that we're starting to get used to the things around us - that to anyone who may just arrive would be very interesting and exciting. These little things are also things we will likely forget in time. So, I'm going to start a little compilation of curious and interesting things I don't want to forget. Food: Fruit kebabs covered in sugar. There are people walking around with their carts. Sitting on the back of their carts is a round cylinder type thing with fruit kebabs sticking out of it. The fruit kebabs have been rolled in a toffee and ... read more

We had heard lots about the Ice Festival. The main thing was that is was VERY cold. It wasn't as bad as it could have been but it was cold enough that I was glad I finally bought a set of long underwear. It was tough to have to go on another road trip so soon after our Beijing Christmas trip. OK, so it really wasn't tough!! We left New Year's morning so I guess we could say we hadn't been on a trip since 2009. Beijing was a self-directed trip. For Harbin, we chose to go on a Fairy Trip. Fairy is the Chinese wife of one of the teachers who happens to run a travel agency. She organized the hotel, bus, taxi and meals so all we had to do was dress warmly and ... read more

Here are the pictures from Day 2 in Harbin the first place is a city park on an island. The second is a natural preserve/zoo for tigers. Sun Island Snow Art Park With so much snow and so many freezing days, someone came up with the idea to make the snow into something warm and cozy. Cozy as in cement that is painted white. Not cozy compared to a warm fire in the fireplace, but compared to the -18 temperature it is nice. So they start by making huge blocks of snow on the frozen river around the island. Then they move these blocks by truck into stacks and carve them into some awesome sculptures. Check out the pictures. A 3 Hour Tour We loaded the bus early on Saturday Morning. I guess I should say that we boarded the bus after the driver spent 20 minutes banging on the door, so that it would open. I figured rubber seals freeze in this extreme cold. Anyway, we were anxious to begin our trip and happy to get out of the cold. It was about 10 below Saturday morning. It was suppose to be a 3 hour tour, I mean a 3 hour drive. A quick stop to pick up our last tour member and we were off for Harbin and the famous snow festivals and tiger park. There was some difficulty closing the door, but it ended up closing so we could go. As we started down the highway the fun began. Our driver was ... read more

The Korea trip has been trying for two dates still not has enough people sign up. Harbin is the final choice after some serious thinking; because that is the only place I did not go in China yet. I do not want to stay in Beijing for that long. Good practice for my Chinese too. It is off season and before the annual ice festival, train ticket is not that hard to get a soft sleeper. The school just finished yesterday, it is a little rush to pack for the cold weather. I thought it will be empty at the train, surprised it is packed. I took the “Z” train. The whole train is soft sleeper, so less people in the train and free up the restroom. I have the upper bunk as usual; I like ... read more

So, things have been a little quiet on the blog front of late. I think I used my quota of time and energy on the Beijing blog. Luckily Im starting to feel re-enthused! The average week for Wayne and myself consists solely around where and when we are teaching. With only 1 full day off it's hard to fully embrace any quality down time. In saying that we do have some down time and have good memories. On Mondays I aim to sleep in and attempt to go with as much as the flow as possible. This goal can be hard to consistently obtain as Monday is an ideal day to also get all of those chores out of the way so the coming week can be as carefree as possible. A Monday many months ago, ... read more

Harbin to Suifenhi 6 oct Had no difficulty purchasing the Ticket to Suinenhi, overnight $24, third class middle bunk. Slept much of the way; arrived about 8 am, station and ticket windows. Could not get a ticket; my Chinese must be getting worse. At the second travel agency met Lee, Jong, 25 born in V. is Chinese on Russian passport. He, I thought offered to let me travel with him for $35. Sounded like a good idea to me. Several taxi rides and lunch on him. I purchased my own Bus ticket, 14 hrs $10, plus another $10 on the Russian side. Cleared immigration/customs no problems, unless your the person behind the idiot who tried to clear customs with out his luggage. I had to go back and took cuts in line.
