Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Greetings from Wuzhou. I bring you this from a gaming room, at great risk to my health, surrounded as I am by chain-smoking 14 year olds. We found little to detain us in Yeng Shou, it being a launch point for tourist trips up to the Li River valley, and those of you who are paying attention will know that we have already idled a few days away up there. We cycled along to Li Pu, stopping off to view "The Big Banyan Tree" as it is unimaginatively, but accurately, named. Indeed, it is big, and old too (more than 2000 [View Full Entry]

This Little Piggy went to Market
Totally Offal
Market Scene

Emma- Hayley and I met Cindy for breakfast and she said she was taking us to her Dad's restaurant but when we arrived there, it was closed! We ended up having food in the hotel restaurant which was an experience to say the least. When we got out of the lift, the whole room turned and stared! We were observed the whole time we ate. It was hilarious. After breakfast we gathered our bags, said goodbye to Cindy, and went to the bus. Sad to say goodbye to her. Ailbhe-So after a fairly eventless journey, we arrived in Guangzhou, and quickly realised [View Full Entry]

Wuzhou a go-go

 Asia » China » Guangxi » Wuzhou
Ailbhe- So a quick update on our altered travel plans- today we were travelling to Wuzhou, a town midway between Yangshuo and Guangzhou. The idea was we'd break the journey in Wuzhou, spend a night in Guangzhou, then take a bus from there to Macau, spend two nights there and then take the ferry to Hong Kong for another two nights, by which time Mark and Hayley would be due to fly home. Emma and I hoped to fly from Hong Kong to Hanoi. The bus from Wuzhou took about 6 hours I think, and we stopped a few times . It was [View Full Entry]

Learning Lessons

 Asia » China » Guangxi » Wuzhou
Finally my excruciatingly long and surprisingly short stint at teaching in Wuzhou has come to a close and I can look back at the lessons I have taught and the things I have learnt. I used to complain about the terrible state the Australian education system was in but it seems so effective and luxurious compared to China. I cant speak for the rich schools in the cities, these are apparently quite good. What I can say about the poor schools in the country is that it disturbs and saddens me. The school I was teaching in, New Cambridge English School, [View Full Entry]

Greater Wuzhou

 Asia » China » Guangxi » Wuzhou
With the students gone and my job finished Wuzhou still had one more suprise in store for me. The principal called it "propaganda", it seems Chinese people still use this word without any negative connotations. I called it "false advertising". I was taken around to all the neighbouring villages where I gave little "speeches" about the benefits of learning English to awestuck country bumpkins. Since they didnt understand a world I said the principal was free to translate my speeches however he wanted. His entrepreneurialism bordered on deviousness and I suspect he embellished my speeches to fit [View Full Entry]

Can you hear me Jebus?

 Asia » China » Guangxi » Wuzhou
As most of us, in times of heightened and frazzled emotions, we look for guidence from the most revered and most holy source; the Simpsons. The passage of scripture that rings true in my troubled mind is "Mrs Pommohurst?......I'd like to get down now." I cant believe I have only been in Wuzhou for three weeks. It feels like forever. I have one more week left. Can I make it? Life isnt actually all that bad. I Think maybe the heat is affecting my brain. From torrential rain and flooding the weather has taken a hop, skip and a jump to [View Full Entry]

yeah, so still in Wuzhou

Every time I think I see a light at the end of the tunnel it turns out to be a train speeding towards me. I am, of course, talking about my ongoing battle with getting photos uploaded onto my blog. I have won a small victory, the photos are now saved on a computer at the school. The problem that the internet connection at the school is so slow that they will not up load. I can say this with some conviction after 2 hot and frustrating hours of trying. And before you state the obvious, yes I made the files [View Full Entry]

Ive been in Wuzhou for a week and I will be here for another three weeks because I am teaching in the English College here. Yes there is a funny story behind it and yes I will now tell you that funny story. Getting to Wuzhou was pretty easy. I had to catch the interstate bus from Zhauqing which was easy enough. I used my little pre-written cards to get my ticket and I just kept showing various people in uniforms my ticket and they ushered me in the right direction. The bus trip was disappointingly boring compared to the crazy [View Full Entry]
