My school is busy doing exams for the various year groups and so I have spent some of my week visiting other schools. We visited a rural primary school in another county and were the special guests at the graduation ceremony. We observed and fedback on a couple demonstration lessons, visited some general lessons and played some games and then gave a speech at the ceremony. We of course were then invited to rather a tasty meal afterwards. This week we also learned that we were not the only foreigners in the town. There are also some working at the local university and 2 other middle schools in the town. It was quite a revelation. We met up with them on Friday night a drink and again on Sunday for a meal as some of them ... read more

Most of this week was taken up with our training in Huachi. We set off on Thursday and embarked upon our long journey to the rural school were the training was held. Having spent several hours on bumpy, winding, dusty tracks, crossing rivers and seeing wild pigs, we came to a sudden halt. There was a road block. Several local peasants were blocking the road as a protest to the oil company that was running its heavy trucks up and down their village, damaging their field, crops, livelihoods and roads. They were charging each vehicle the equivalent of £1 to pass. After some discussion, we agreed to pay, only to meet 2 other road blocks 200m further down the track. It was only when somebody said that Phil and I had travelled all the way from ... read more

This weekend we visited Xian, the nearest big city for a coffee and a culture fix! At the youth hostel we were staying in, we bumped into some other VSO volunteers and had our evening meal with them. I felt quite a fraud as we ended up eating pizza! Not very Chinese! Later on, we met up with another volunteer and ended up going down “Bar Street” for a few drinks. It all felt rather strange as the day was spent doing “western things” and here we were in China. It felt far removed from our daily life in Xifeng. The next day, we visited an animal research centre. The centre rescues pandas, bears, golden takins and ibis from the nearby mountains which are all endangered. The conditions were mixed but the aim was to release ... read more

Taking a stroll in Xifeng is quite an experience. You see a variety of sights. Here are just are a few of the things I witnessed today. The other Sunday whilst walking through town, I saw a man of at least 120 years old pulling a cart which was piled up high and which looked to be at least four times his body weight. Just a few minutes later a moped went past with two dead pigs riding pillion. Unfortunately, I was unable to catch this one on camera! People weeing in the street is not unusual; mainly men and children, although I have seen a woman do it once. Spitting is a common occurrence and back in a vengeance, despite being temporarily banned during the Olympic Games. To say that people stare would be an ... read more

A bit of a quiet week this week. and so not too much to report. Work has been my main focus. I’ve spent most of the week preparing for a training session that I will do with the Heads of Department on how to run an effective department. It requires quite a lot of research as schools are run quite differently to what I am used to and trying to find out the right information requires the right questions and this can take time. Me not speaking Chinese doesn’t really help either! Also, every Thursday afternoon I do a workshop with the English Department about British Culture. This week we discussed Food and Drink. Besides teaching them about traditional dishes such as Yorkshire Pudding, Bubble and Squeak, I explained to them about the various mealtimes. They ... read more

The past couple of weeks have been a bit busy and so I will summarise the last fortnight instead. The running and the Chinese lessons are going well. With the Chinese, some progress is being made but there is still a long way to go. At times it is a bit frustrating having to rely on people to say and do things for you but at the same time we are very grateful to everybody who does help us with our general day to day tasks. Our main event this fortnight was our training at Baima, a rural school near where we live. We trained 80 middle school and 80 primary school teachers in two, two day courses. The training was fun if not tiring and as ever punctuated by lots of eating and drinking. The ... read more
