It has really been a slowing down time towards the end of the semester since our last entry. We had our Chinese lesson as usual and our teacher's mother vey kindly invited to have lunch. So we enjoyed a couple of bowls of the local noodles - homemade! Later in the week we , our national volunteers and some other Chinese teachers visited a local middle school to offer further help, advice and guidance to help the Maths teachers improve their students' learning. As is usually the case, we were treated to a banquet lunch and returned for the afternoon stint FTB!. Christmas has simply not been the same here in Xifeng, for two reasons mainly. One, the Chinese don't celebrate it (they use the lunar calendar and have their main celebration during February) things pretty ... read more

On Tuesday we arranged to meet an NV for our Chinese lesson at her flat (as she recently broke her ankle when she fell off her bike on the ice). We received directions from another NV but nothing is ever straight-forward in China. After following the directions we called her but our info must have confused as eventually our NV had to send her brother to meet us! In the afternoon, with Sabine safely at work, I and an NV visited a new restaurant to organise Sabine’s surprise birthday meal (Sabine hates surprises). It took longer that anticipated so soon after arriving home, after having chosen a cake from the local dangao dian (cake shop), Sabine arrived home. I announced I was taking her out for a birthday meal so she quickly got ready and we ... read more

The early part of the week was quiet. We worked on resources etc in preparation for repeating the English pronunciation training. As a treat on Wednesday morning, we and a national volunteer, went for a buffet breakfast, eat all you can for £1 each! This restaurant seems to specialize in this style. They offer three meals a day although lunch and dinner are more expensive than zao fan. Apparently it’s quite popular with the more wealthy people in the town. Thursday saw us and several of our Chinese colleagues travel to a local middle school, about 15 minutes by bus, to observe English lessons before feeding back and giving general advice about how to improve the effectiveness of learning. Xing qi wu (Friday) saw me and a national volunteer visit a primary school on the edge ... read more

The highlight of the week for me was venturing into rural Qingyang again to do some follow-up observations for the previous training in Zhenyuan. On Thursday a national volunteer and I caught a car (long distance taxi) to Meng ba and observed four lessons in the primary school. Remember, it’s cold here (We’re talking -10ish) so each classroom has a tine ‘pot-bellied’ stove with the flue leading out of a window or a hole in the wall and a wooden box for coal. In some schools the rule is that teachers must leave a window open because of H1N1. Thus it remains quite nippy inside never mind outside. Needless to say students and staff always keep their coats on some have hats and gloves also (and doubtless, thermal underclothes!). Following a banquet lunch we repeated this ... read more

The week started slowly, with both of us working on resources for a training session on Thursday. From information we heard many months ago, we’d decided to develop an idea which would help, particularly, English primary teachers (some of who have never had any formal teacher training or even majored in English) to improve their pronunciation of English and so better teach their students. So aside from our weekly Chinese lesson and Sabine’s Film Club, lesson observations and feedbacks and meetings at her school, our time was spent copying handbooks and tweaking our PowerPoint slideshow etc. Friday, we had a meeting with all the international and national volunteers in Qingyang to discuss future plans etc. Saturday evening allowed us another new experience - a thanksgiving dinner. The North American volunteers in Xifeng invited us to celebrate ... read more

It’s official, winter has now arrived. And blimey it’s parkey! Along with the winter came the snow which made the town look, well, very white! And even stranger than that is the simple fact that life just continued as normal. No schools were closed, all the buses ran, even though the roads weren’t gritted. Traffic just went slower. People just took more care on the snowy paths. If somebody fell over, it was no big deal. Nobody here would even think about suing the council! It was quite refreshing in more ways than one. The snow has put a stop to the running as it is both too cold and rather difficult to run in snow and slush which has then been frozen. We have however, been playing badminton. Bad thing about this is that we ... read more

In November, we are going to be doing some English language training in the local primary schools and so this week we visited some of the schools. Our main objective was to see what the standard of teaching was like but also to assess what type of training they need. In the morning, we observed some lessons and then fedback to the teachers. We also went and visited some other classes as most of the students have never seen a foreigner before. We spoke our best Chinese with them which they thought was hilarious and played some games. In the afternoon, we took part in some paper cutting lessons which is a craft local to Qingyang. We also discovered a buffet restaurant where you can eat as much as you want for 30 Yuan (about ... read more

This week has all been about getting back to reality after our travels. Since getting back we have done a huge amount of washing which seemed to have come from nowhere(!!!) and caught up on some much needed sleep. Despite the new semester not officially starting until 24th August, we had a day’s training to finish preparing for the leaders at Number 4 Middle School. This was held on the Friday and went rather well. On Saturday, we went to Heshui, another county, to support some training that some VSO trained teachers had organised as part of the teachers’ “Continued Education Week”. During the summer holidays, every teacher has to take part in this and then take an exam at the end. From what we have been told, some schools organise this better than others. What ... read more

The past couple of weeks for me at least have been a wind down towards the end of term. The school has been busy with various exams and so a big part of my work has not taken place. However, we did have a visit from the Programme Office to see what sort of Life Skills Education the students in the area were getting. This involved visiting different junior and primary schools in the area and interviewing the staff and students. The conclusion was that there was certainly a need to equip the students with more life skills for when they leave school. One group of students at one of the primary schools said that they needed to be taught how to look after themselves and how to live independently. For a lot of these children, ... read more

The weather remains warm and long may it continue. A quiet week all in all and so I have been running a bit more than usual. We also played a few games of badminton but got hammered by our neighbours. Must try harder! Next week they have challenged us to another game. The chance of even getting a couple of points is highly unlikely. At the weekend, I went for a walk to the outskirts of town and headed towards the countryside. You don’t need to walk far to see farmers working the land the way they did maybe 50 years ago. There is an abundance of apricots at the moment and apart from eating them, the locals are also drying them out to preserve them. They are also doing this to the rind of water ... read more
