Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

The piano island Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen » Gulangyu
Well let me start by saying a very merry Christmas to you all from this truly magical little island! Just had a beer on the beach (finally somewhere warm!) going to post quite a few pictures of Piano Island (Gulangyu Island) to give you a true idea of quite how diverse this tiny little island is. On the ferry over you see the usual Chinese massive obsession with neon, they will light anything up, regardless of its insignificance! They love it!! As much fun as it is to photograph, I started to think “oh well here we go again...” and oh [View Full Entry]

Hakka village, Liulian After the mountain climbing in Huang Shan Chris spotted a new destination for us on the map of China. Hakka villages with special tolou houses in South East China. So we took some adventurous train and bus rides to arrive to the middle of nowhere village of Liulian (I bet you wont find it on the map). The village is famous of the constructions by Hakka people, they built huge so-called tolou houses, where they could fit few hundred people. This tradition came from the era of the clans, where clans were living in close communities. In order [View Full Entry]

Yongding Asia » China » Fujian » Yongding

Nouveaux voyages, nouvelle ville, nouvelle copine, nouveaux étudiants, nouveau dialecte, nouvelle cuisine !

Blog 10: It's just a few steps....and then there were angels. Well I'm telling you, it isn't. Not by any stretch of the imagination is it just a few steps. Huang Shan. Or Yellow Mountain if you prefer. FMG. Seven days ago, I undertook to go up Huang Shan. This is what happened... I got up early as you know dear reader, I had 6 hours and 3 buses to catch. Well I was happily on my way on the bus to the mountain armed with the knowledge there were shuttle buses taking you from the town Tankou to the base [View Full Entry]

Mistyness.
Huang Shan...misty. lots of clouds.
Huang Shan..still misty, still lots of clouds. When you get this high, your clothes, soaked with earlier sweat, become very cold and clammy. Eurgghh.

Gulanyu and Xiamen Asia » China » Fujian » Xiamen » Gulangyu
On the hard sleeper train to Xiamen we met an extremely friendly Chinese student called Jing Jing. Jing Jing was returning home from Hangzhou after visiting here brother. Even before the train had set off Jing Jing had greeted us and immediately offered us a vacum packed chicken's foot with an oreo biscuit to wash it down. Up until this point we were more than aware of the ready to eat delicacies that were to be found in Chinese mini markets and although we were keen to try new things we hadn't been particularly forthcoming in trying chicken's feet. The particular [View Full Entry]

Well I am alive and well. Fuzhou is hotter then expected, but that was to be expected... Living at Cody's place, witch is a nice little 2 bedroom apartment, with beautiful air conditioning.Today was my first full day in China, and what a busy day it was... First day at York, first real walk around the city centre and first full day of Chinese eating. I cannot complain too much about the food, but me and some Aussie's went off at dinner talking about all the foods we miss from home. Kinda early for me to miss foods already, but whatever. Flying

Here we go...back on travelblog and way too many blogs to key in! (which I guess is somehow a good thing…) More UNESCO world heritage sites with the discovery of the Fujian and its famous Tulou (Chinese rammed earth buildings)! Those unique work of art had initially been misinterpreted as being “missile launch base” by the American in the 60’s and although it is today a good joke, one can only be impressed by those round and square tulou buildings where dozen families live in perfect equality while being protected from the outside world by the structure of the bu [View Full Entry]

29th of December 2008 - 1st of January 2009 First of a little bit about the port city, Fuzhou (population approximately 6,608,000) is the capital of the province of Fujian. It is located on the north bank of the Min River (the largest of Fujian’s rivers). Some more interesting facts about this city are: - It was used as the main line of resistance (unsuccessful) against the British fleet arriving from Guangzhou in the 19th century. - A short-lived republic (democratic) was established in the area after the Manchu army surrendered in the province. - It is also the main home [View Full Entry]
