Mrs C: It sums up the life here. Night time. During the day the weather is hot hot hot, but when the sun goes down, the place buzzes! Street vendors appear selling books, jewellery, clothing and food.... all of which must be resisted until the first paycheck arrives! Bugger! The quirkiness of this city never ends. Everyday there is something else that surprises us and makes us laugh. We went to IKEA last week to boost our kitchen shelving from nothing to something. Just outside the gigantic blue building was what we have fondly named "FAKE IKEA". Why we didnt see it coming is a mystery. A short market street of people selling things that should be inside IKEA, outside. At a quarter of the cost. Needless to say, our first port of call shall now ... read more

It's good to be back in the wu. That is, the suburb of beijing, just outside the fourth ring road, directly north of xizhimen (for those who know their beijing geography), and about twenty km or so (we think) northish of tiananmen (for those who don't). This is the area we stayed in when we were here last, and it's all hapnin now. Yay! However, beijing internet cafes really don't like usb drives being plugged in, and so there are no photos. Hopefully we'll have our own computer soon so can post lots next time! First things first. About 15 metres outside our front door (once you've climbed down the five floors of steps - we're getting fitter again!) is THE BEST noodle shop in the world. For 10 kuai (around $1.60) you get 2 bowls ... read more

thursday march 8 molly: There is so much drama here. Most of it would seem senseless to anyone outside of the Expertise and Venus circles here in Beijing. And I'm sure I'll write a long rant at some point. But suffice it to say that despite the fact that I gave my notice MONTHS ago and said that my last day would be Friday 23 March.... shit has hit the fan like a dozen times since then and it turns out that tomorrow is my last day teaching at Venus Kindergarten. Long story, but I'm fine with this now. After the initial two days of madness when they suddenly told me that my last day was Friday 2nd and I flipped my shit because I had no time to say goodbye to my babies.... Beyond those ... read more

15 February 2007 9:17 Thursday Oh dear god WHY did I think last night was a good idea? Valentine’s Day Lessons: 1. No matter where you are in the world, greasy Chinese food is excellent hangover food. 2. Working with kids is not a good idea when you’re hungover and after only three hours of sleep. 3. Even free, weak Gin&Tonics are potent after you’ve had a few … or nine or a dozen. 4. I can speak Chinese, English and Spanish fluently when inebriated. 5. Amazingly, short men can be hott, too. Who knew? 6. “Propaganda” is perhaps the most aptly named club in all of China. So yesterday afternoon sucked. I went and mailed all of my books at noon, and then went to the bank to pay the phone bill. That was a ... read more
