Leaving Beijing on Chinese New Year's Eve is not very smart. First, there are no taxis. Second, the long walk to the subway with luggage involves dodging fireworks. Third, it's cold. Fourth, the flight's expensive. Fifth, you probably don't want to hear about the fifth - let's move on. First stop - chilling in Singapore with Alan and Cherryll. And naan. Sooooo muuuuuch naaaaaannnnnnnnn. And fresh, which is more than can be said for any of Alan's jokes. Staying in Little India is highly recommended. Especially just around the corner from the 24-hour Mustafa centre, where you can buy anything, but mainly chocolate. Chocolate that isn't made in China. Mmmm..... We had a gorgeous few days looking at orchids, not drinking cocktails around the swimming pool, shopping (a welcome respite for those of us who live ... read more

So, where were we? Ah yes, a vomit free ferry trip back to the big island, away from the little island. Confusing, we know. The lack of stomach contents racing out of the mouth was an even bigger surprise, since we'd been forced to eat KFC earlier in the afternoon. We're not proud of this at all. For Zac, 3rd time of his life. In the almost 10 years we've been together, there has to still be first times for some things, and, well, this was one. But 8 hours of straight travelling in a high pressure situation with absolutely nothing else on hand meant KFC it was. It feels like betrayal to the western stereotype that we'd been trying to avoid the entire time in Zhejiang. Maybe that's why, in the ensuing 15 minutes, 57 ... read more

Yeah, we decided that Thailand didn't really count as a holiday. It was a birthday party, so we treated ourselves to another trip. We went local this time, and with absolutely no agenda (the first time since 2007), we headed off to Zhejiang, China's smallest province. First stop - Hanging in Hangzhou. Not literally. We think pitchi pitchi still prefers firing squad over rope. Our backpacking quest to find a cheap hotel was a complete failure. Wandering from Lamborghini to BMW to Mitsuoka (a Batmobile crossed with Peter Griffin's Penismobile sports car), cheap places were hard to come by. We thought we finally found a bargain (at nearly 8 ducks!!!!) until we tried to get to sleep. Only then did we realise that we were on top of a karaoke bar. Bugger. We hired a driver ... read more

Our very good friends Celeste and Luke, who, until now, have lived in Laos, invited us to Phuket for a few days for Luke's birthday! What an awesome way to celebrate a birthday! We arrived in Phuket very late at night and soon worked out that there were no real taxis and had to bargain to jump in the back of a random guy's car. Not the first time we've done this, and we'd never ended up stranded on the side of the road without a passport, until now. Only kidding. Despite really having no idea where we were going (as we'd both come off the back of some seriously busy time at work and hadn't even got around to looking anything up on a map) our awesome 'taxi' driver got us to our destination... and ... read more

These days, it only takes 120 mins to get from our apartment building to a hotel in Tianjin. Only 30 mins of that is spent on the intercity train - 71% of the time is used up from getting to our house to the 'local' train station. Anyway, all in all, a great excuse for a weekend away! Tianjin presented us with freezing cold weather and a strange mix of China, Europe and antiques. And a Mario castle. After asking random colleagues and friends, we had a Tianjin to-do list. 1. Goubuli baozi This brand is famous in Tianjin. They make baozi and beer. Unfortunately, the baozi were the most expensive we've ever eaten, and frankly, were a disappointment. (1.3 ducks for 1 small serve: yikes!). We're not quite sure what all the fuss was about. ... read more

Ho-ho-ho! Merry Christmas! It is unwise to yell this too loud in our neighbourhood, due to the "Gentlemen's Club" next door, and it may be considered offensive.... so we whisper this message to you. Our Christmas tree is up, our cheap fairy lights are flashing, and there are a s**tload of vegetables piled up in the kitchen for cooking tomorrow. {Come to think of it, there are a s**tload of vegetables under the stairs outside our apartment. Remember cabbage-fest 9000? This year it's leeks. - http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/China/Beijing/Wudaokou/blog-222572.html} The advantage of the awesome apartment that we now live in is that we have a REAL oven. Yes, a real oven. It may not have a temperature gauge. You may not be able to turn on both the upper and lower elements at one time. You may not be ... read more

Zac wanted to call this entry 'Laos and Cambodia and Shijiazhuang with a bit of Beijing in the middle and the end all a little bit before returning to oz for just a short time before once again returning to beijing where it will be slightly warmer but not as warm as Australia' but Sof said it wasn't catchy enough. On reflection, Zac agrees. Kinda. The day before heading off to Laos, it was -15 degrees in Beijing. That same day, it was 35 degrees in Vientiane. For the first time of a few, we thought we were going to die. 50 degrees difference is terrible stress on one's digestive system, according to ancient Chinese medicine. (As we know, ancient Chinese medicine experts were well up to speed on consequences of international air travel). The very ... read more

Again, I will apologise in advance. Zac has informed me that my blog is very “dry”. Not sure what I’m supposed to do to wet it up. There’s a glass of Polish vodka sitting next to me, but that wouldn't do my computer any good. After Mum’s concerns that we would be sharing our sleeper compartment with an axe-murderer/drunk/weirdo/all-of-the-above, we had a much smoother trip on the train, mainly because we were sharing with such an on-the-ball Polish lady. So, we managed to get off the train without the same mad scramble as last time. Mum and I found our way to the hotel by subway, and went for a wander around the local area (hmmm… wandering seems to be a common theme….). Finding ourselves in a much larger city, we felt a bit overwhelmed by ... read more

I'm afraid it's only half of the zacandsof pair this time. The less hairy one, that is. So, the vibe may be a little different - maybe better? maybe worse? I'll let you decide... I've set off on a holiday to Poland and Germany. Mum and I have always wanted to visit our rellies there together, and the chance came up cos Mum and Dad have been travelling in Europe together. As per usual, Air China provided a less-than-comfortable, arduous, 13-hour journey. Highlights were: lack of leg space, the crappiest selection of movies and the air hostesses reminding us that it was cold outside and that we should wear more clothes (typical!). I would also like to whinge about the lack of german efficiency at the Frankfurt airport. I had an hour and a half to ... read more

As we prepare for China's Harmonious 60th Anniversary celebrations of a United China, I would look like to look back over the past 10 months of progress in our wondrous capital. All party members celebrated Spring Festival in Sanya, Hainan. Despite the comforts of the 5-star Holiday Inn, the 5-star Marriott and the 5-star Harmonious Hilton, all members were reminded of the peasant struggles from whence they came. When sitting beachside and poolside for so many hours, ones skin does indeed become harmoniously dark, like that of a peasant. Committee member, Shaylee, graced us with her presence, and aided the discovery of the harmonious blind massage therapy. A massaged committee member is a dedicated committee member. Party Headquarters underwent a shift in location to a more prosperous side of town. This leads to an increase in ... read more
