This morning, I woke up and watched Chinese soap operas and packed my belongings. In China, they expect your room to be very clean upon checkout. I made my bed, mom (one of two)! My hotel tried to convince me to take the subway/bus/walk method of transportation because it was cheaper, but it scared me. And honestly, there's no way I'm spending at least 90 minutes to get to my destination when a cab is so cheap compared to America and takes an hour with no additional walking. Plus, it removes human error on my part, the non-Chinese speaker, and places it on the taxi driver. Don't worry, I opened my google maps to make sure we were headed in the right direction. ;) I checked out of my hotel early to take a taxi to ... read more

A quick recap of our final two days and travels home: Saturday morning was the closing ceremony. It was a wonderful celebration of the students' hard work and progress, as well as the Feng Tai-Jenison partnership. Seeing the parents beaming with pride as their children read, recited, and sang in English was incredibly gratifying. There were also performances by both a young Beijing Opera performer, and girls chorus. After the ceremony it was at last time to say a bittersweet goodbye. Sunday afternoon we left Beijing and began the long trek back to the USA. Without question, it was difficult to leave behind Beijing and the students with whom we had forged such close relationships. At the same time, we were also feeling the excitement of seeing our families and being back home once again. There ... read more

It is hard to believe that tomorrow morning will bring the closing ceremony and bittersweet end to our journey here in China. The last few days have flown by! They have included a great deal of teaching as well as some unforgettable outings with our students. Monday we visited the Great Wall, which was both a breathtaking and surreal experience. We even ate lunch sitting atop one of the many lookout towers! Yesterday (Thursday) afternoon we visited the Science and Technology Museum as well as the Olympic Park. The field trips are great teaching opportunities because they provide students with the most opportunity to use their English and develop conversational skills. We typically notice that the field trips are more 'work' than in-school teaching days! This is because it's a continual flow of conversation with students ... read more

We have been teaching our wonderful students for seven days, and the word that continues to come to mind is impact. This experience is having a tremendous impact on all those involved; students and the teachers of both Jenison and Feng Tai. I would not have guessed a week ago how much our students would improve in their written and oral English in this short time. We've been teaching them for only a week, but the progress is significant. Students that would barely speak a week ago are now engaging in complete exchanges and small conversations. Students that had a greater command of English prior are eagerly soaking in every new word and taking pride in demonstrating what they've learned. We believe this growth is due to two key factors. The first is obvious, the sheer ... read more

With introductions complete we are now ready to dive in to what we came here to do- teach! A major component of this trip is to bring western teaching methodology to Feng Tai First. While this school is very successful (the strongest in its district) they are very transparent about wanting to learn our teaching methods. In particular, those related to active student engagement which is a focus in Jension. Keeping this in mind we spent the first day each teaching one active engagement strategy. We've structured the camp into rotations so that there are small groups of students who rotate through each teacher/class every day. By each teaching one engagement strategy we set up our students to have all four strategies in use by the end the first day. We also completed a short subject-specific ... read more

We arrived Tuesday morning at Feng Tai First where we greeted the children who were to be our students for the next two weeks. The students were surprised when all five of us immediately approached them and began talking and interacting with them. This is not a common teacher-student dynamic in China. The students were very eager to try and communicate with us, but in no time at all we became acutely aware of the language barrier. The opening ceremony was very formal, and such a unique experience. Principal Yin welcomed us and expressed her appreciation for the Jenison-Feng Tai partnership. Crystal likewise expressed her sentiments of enthusiasm about the partnership and possibilities it will bring. In the afternoon we introduced ourselves to the students and lead group songs and games. We continue to be intrigued ... read more

Our first full day in Beijing has been amazing! We started our morning visiting Feng Tai First school. After months of planning and Skype meetings it was wonderful to at last see the school in person and meet the teachers and Principal Yin. We had a great team meeting working through final preparations. Opening ceremonies are tomorrow morning and will commence the two week Fine Arts Camp. After a tour of the school grounds it was off to lunch. Once again we experienced the incredible hospitality of our hosts who provided an enormous meal. Dish after dish was delivered to our table, and we eagerly tried them all. One of our favorites was a pork dish that as Grant described, was "deep fried bacon drenched in maple syrup" and oh so delicious! We had a lot ... read more

Beijing Tea Market. After a month of searching for tea, it was only fitting that we found ourselves wandering the labyrinth of shops composing the Beijing Tea market. Over 1,000 tea shops. Which to choose? We have already explored so many shops in so many places that Kit has begun producing an imaginary movie called “Kunming”. The first line is: “Of all the tea shops on all the streets in all the towns in China, she walks into mine.” Now we just had to find the shopkeeper to utter these famous words. We decided that the main streets with the large glitzy shops were not for us. Kit remembered a small hutong (Beijing alleyway) in the Maliandao tea district from a previous visit. We knew what to look for: gunnysacks and boxes full of fragrant tea; ... read more

I'm looking at an ESL teaching job in Feng Tai. They are offering 5000 Yuan/month, free accommodation, visa provided, if you can finish one year contract, provide 1000USD as airfare. How far does 5000 Yuan/month go? Since they are providing accomadations, is this plenty for me to buy food and have some social life, at least? Thanks! Bill ... read more

haha! i'm writing this from beijing, but i'm going to save that story for the next entry, because i want to get in a quick one with the photos from our farewell barbecue - yes, that's right, very aussie of us, on sunday arvo we had a farewell barbecue at the sai kung flat, which doubled as a housewarming for mickey and jess as well. despite the category one typhoon (which made it rain intermittently, and provided some welcome cool winds), about six of our friends turned up to cook food with us all afternoon and celebrate. there would have been more, but unfortunately some of our mates, kathy and tat, were kicked out of their flat and had to move out that day, meaning that the street art crew were busy helping them with that. ... read more
