Up at the crack of dawn we got to see sunrise from the cramped conditions of an over filled minibus on our way to the Port in Siam Reap. The Port was a hive of activity and we bought some provisions for the trip. The floating villages are amazing, it's like "Waterworld" only better. The trip was brilliant, people constantly waved from the riverbanks and kids ran alongside the boat. This beats the bus. Battambang was nice enough and we stayed just the one night then got a bus to the capital. In my mind I had built up Phnom Penh to be a rough, hard, and dangerous city. It turned out to be the most delightful place actually, granted there are areas where you would be shot by a Khemer over a cigarette, we stayed ... read more

After a couple more days in Siem Reap we have moved on to Phnom Penh, the Capital of Cambodia.. great city, very small but very busy. Landmine Museam On our last day in Siem Reap we visited the landmine museam outside of town. Cambodia is one of the most heavily mined countries in the world and a lot of people still are killed or maimed by them. This museam was started by this guy who had been fighting with the Khmear Rouge since he was 10. Grew up in the Jungle, spent his youth killing and setting booby traps and land mines.,Never saw a city until he was 25. when the fighting stopped he started to de-mine Cambodia, by hand with no metal dectors or anything. Started a school for child landmine vicitms as well...verry cool ... read more

Well, gotta say I like Phnom Penh. Vibrant and bustling, it seems to be a city in its infancy that is still finding its way. Hard to believe this city was empty and badly damaged or that countless acts of brutality were carried out here, less than 3 decades ago. These days its got a good vibe and even though there is still a lot of poverty its somehow a little less depressing than Siem Reap. In general there a more kids and others selling their wares on the street, approaching your table and what not but they are a lot less persistent. They seem fairly content to play the numbers game rather than wasting time pushing someone who doesn't seem too keen. GETTING HERE Fairly unevenful journey, save for one little worry early on. When ... read more

Well not exactly but I have no doubt about the last two as they are available everywhere especially the last one mainly as a ingredient in food to make it "Happy" so traveller beware not to order the shakes, pizzas and brownies "Extra Happy" After finding a hotel just off Sisowath Quay which overlooks the Tonle Sap river we spent the night relaxing from the bus journey down from Siem Reap. Phnom Penh in all seriousness is a city which holds more than the above, Our first place to visit was the Tuol Svay Prey High School or S-21 as some may know it. This was the largest centre of detention and torture in the country during the reign of Pol Pot, nearly 100 people lost their lives everyday in this detention centre. Between 1975 and ... read more

The last few days have being completely packed with sight seeing and new experiences. We spent 3 days in Siem Reap where we explored Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat is definately worth the $40.00 to get in. The buildings are beautifully sculpured and tourists are free to climb on anything they see (at your own risk....it can be pretty sketchy at times). My favorite part of Angkor Wat was the monastery that is amongst the ruins. There are hundreds and hundreds of monks in tents. They are about as curious to see you as you are to see them and they are often eager to practice their English with the travelers. Back at the guest house Matt and I made friends with some of the locals working there and Matthew and Seiha (our tuk tuk driver) devoured ... read more

Shit man, I've turned up in a new town with all of $3 to my name and it's 5pm and the bank's are shut so how the fuck am I gonna sort me cash out?! Someone was definitely looking out for me that day I tell ya coz the bus actually dropped us off at a Visa cash advance place - how lucky can you get? lol. With $200 burning a hole in my pocket I'm off on a moto to The Lazy Fish Guesthouse to see if they have any rooms and sure enough there was a $3 a night bungalow just waiting for me. "Would you like some marijuana with your room Dan?", my more than helpful host asks me. Fucking too right kid! 1/2oz of shit hot bush for only $6, you can't ... read more

The last 2 weeks have been really hectic. We moved from Siem Reap down to Phnom Penh, the capital; on to Kratie in the north east; then onto Kampong Cham on the Mekong; back down to Phnom Penh; then to Kampot in the south; on to Kep a couple of hours further and then onto Sihnoukville on the south coast. Phnom Penh was a real shock to the system and made Siem Reap look like a sleepy little fishing village. The city is extremely dirty and unpleasant and our hostel was a hole which at night was barred up like a prison (slight fire hazard when locked inside) My room mate Emily and I had to change rooms after an awful first night hunting down and killing cockroaches in a room with no windows or ... read more

So we have arrived safely in Phnom Penh. A few more dramas to be had while traveling, but hopefully that is all of them out of the way. Our Visas arrived on time and in order. We then went to coles to buy the last of the items we needed, and go to the post office to pay a fine, and my eftpos card stopped working. Great. The day we were meant to leave and it just stopped swiping. So we went down to the bank to sort it out and were faced with more dramas. The old bag who was helping us refused to send a new card to Viet Nam. What a load of crap. After some more drama, a new card was finally sent, then everything was finally organised and after some sad ... read more

A late start today to go visit the markets. First stop was the Russian Market. It has stuff from everywhere and we found a few more goodies. Of particular interest was a stall selling crispy critters; ie. spiders, beetles and greasshoppers. We were taken to another second rate Chinese buffet for lunch. When we got back in the car, we suggested to the guide that she talk to her boss about giving options for meals. We would have preferred more local fare, but not insects. We then went to to another market. This one is in a huge domed building. It hought maybe it would have several levels but everything is on the ground floor. The dome with its many openings help keep the building cool. Nonetheless, the smell of rotting fish is prevasive. We were ... read more
