Hi all, Tuesday night ended up being a bit of a late one, typically because I had to be up at 5.30 the next morning. I met Vicky and Paul an english couple, and Amanda and Craig, an aussie couple, and well, one cocktail led to another . . . a good night was had by all, definately. The next morning on the way to the "pier" by the side of the road were wooden shacks on stilts - apparently in the wet season the road floods, so they just pick up their houses and move them up the nearby hill until the waters recede, then move back down. Getting to the fast boat was an achievement in itself, you are transported on a smaller boat to where the fast boat is moored in deeper waters. ... read more

I know it is a terrible excuse for not blogging, but I have been sick for the last two days - mum, please forgive me, you must have been devastated when you logged on to find no new blog! Anyway, yesterday morning I felt a little sick in the stomach for no apparent reason, so Eva supplied me with some dihorea tablets from our medical stach. That seemed to fix me prettyquickly, so we embarked on another day of the Russian Markets for some serious shopping. DVDs, silk, silver, etc. I bought 48 DVDs and 26 CDs, all for about US$100! We just couldnt get enough, and the quality is reportedly the best in South East Asia. Justification for another day of self-indulgent shopping - we are supporting the local economy and giving money directly to ... read more

We woke up this morning after a pretty terrible sleep, filled with the bass that was streaming through the closed window panes and under the door from the party outside our door, two rotating fans that were giving us puffy eyes and cold shoulders, and just generally discomfort in being where we were... I slept like a log for most of the night, mind you, but the girls didn't, and Leens was paranoid about our safety, as we didn't really feel like we could trust anyone down here. I got out of bed (which Eva and I had shared, as they only had a room with a double and a single left) and looked outside, thinking I would be met by sunshine and chirping birds. Instead, there was rain and stormy weather... perfect, and I don't ... read more

After a week in Siem Reap we bussed it back down to Phnom Penh. Here we had a look round the National Museum and the Grand Palace ( Which is much like the Thais' one with a few more Buddahs and wobbly floor tiles made of silver ). We also went to the Tuol Sleng Museum, former school and site of one of the Khmer Rouge's interrogation camps in which thousands of Cambodians and others were, quite recently, tortured ( by the on average 14 year old wardens ) before being taken and bludgeoned to death at the nearby Killing Fields. It is quite amazing how good natured the people of this country are given their past and therefore hard to imagine their history even with the gruesome and explicit exhibits shown here. It is estimated ... read more

From the profound, to the bizarre, to the horrific, so go our travels through Cambodia. Angkor Wat is, as expected, breath taking and exhausting all in one. The constant begging and postcard offering is both frustrating and sad but when a region, and in many ways an entire country, depend on the "walking white ATM", you have to understand. Then onto Battambang. Which, since we couldn't remember how to properly pronounce, quickly became "Bada Bing". This is the other tourist destination in the area and reachable by bus or boat from Siem Reap. We opted for boat as we had been told that the bus is complete torture and the boat only just a little painful. Ironically, our new buddy Mitch (let's hear it for Canadians moving to the USA) forewarned us that the trip ... read more

Morning all Before i get started, i just want to ask what the heck is going on back in England? I log into BBC website this morning and find in the football Arsenal loose to Blackburn, Chelsea got spanked at home by Barcelona and England loose in the rugby to Scotland. Now to be fair for two out of three of those I would happily travel to Cambodia every year but getting turned over by the scots in the 6-nations leaves a bad taste in my mouth - and I have had enough of that at times with the food On the subject of food although generally the quality has been great, its a pretty mixed bag here in terms of styles. Cambodian grub seems on the whole to be a mix of Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai ... read more

Well I'm about to leave Nam, when this bus eventually turns up. Just got to avoid Charlie for the last few hours and then got my papers home, well to Cambodia. Since I last posted I've hung arounf Hoi An for a few more days, didn't do a great deal, spent most of the time at the beach chilling get a tan, sweet!!!! Went out, properly one night. All the bars close at 11pm so your left with getting a bike about 15km to one of 2 dodgy bars or the booze cruise, we opted for the booze cruise. The booze cruise is basically this boat you pay $6 to get on and your drinks are free, it's just local stuff, but doesn't taste too bad and gets you hammered. I certainly got my $6 worth. ... read more

Today was a fairly touristy day for us. We decided to visit the Silver Pagoda in the Royal Palace as well as the National Museum in the morning, and then the Tuol Sleng Museum in the afternoon, the later being housed in the school grounds which were known as the S-21 prison during the Pol Pot/Khmer Rouge rule. We headed out to the Royal Palace at around 8am (we actually walked there, can you believe it?? The excuse of wanting to support the poor tuk-tuk and moto drivers of Phnom Penh didn't stretch far enough this time.) and stopped for some breakfast at another street stall, this time housed under a tarp. The Khmers grinned and smirked as we made our way to one of the tables, and the hostess spoke no English at all, but ... read more

Cambodia can be hard to love. After getting off the boat from Chau Doc, Vietnam I had my first taste of those legendary Cambodian roads when we were herded onto a bus. 90 minutes later with my teeth nearly shaken out of my skull we rolled into Phnom Penh an hour later than expected. A murmur broke out amongst the tourists on the bus- Star Mart? Shell Stations? In Cambodia? I had been dreaming of 24 hour convenience stores, I had not seen one in Vietnam and I wasn't expecting to see them in Cambodia or anywhere else besides Bangkok, but there they were like manna from heaven. I confess I got a little teary-eyed. The bus dropped us off at the Capitol Guesthouse, which I knew was a dump but more importantly it is the ... read more

Today's entry is going to be shorter than yesterdays (do I hear you all sigh with relief??), only because we have yet to fill the second half of the day with exciting things! I woke up early this morning, and decided to fight the urge of wanted to fall asleep again, and instead got up at 6am to read A History of Cambodia on the weathered hammock on the small balcony of our building. Before I actually opened the book, I was spellbound for half an hour, just watching the people in the alley below washing dishes, cooking meals for what seemed like the entire Cambodian Army, and racing around doing their chores. Motos tooted in the background, and for the first time, I even hear birds chirping. By 8am, the other ladies were up and ... read more
