Question: What did you think of Phnom Penh? Answer: Depressing. I stayed in Phnom Penh 3 days, and in those 3 days I learned what atrocites people are capable of inflicting on one another and how it can make the value of human life meaningless. It was a depressing and terrifying experience. I don´t know if I regret going or not, but I didn´t feel safe. When you walk outside of your guesthouse there are 5 men trying to sell you drugs. I don´t mean a little weed, I mean, Dealer- "you want weed" Me - "no" Dealer- ¨you want coke¨ Me - "no" Dealer- "you want opium" Me - "no" Dealer-"how bout extacy or acid" Me - "no" Dealer-"ohhhh, you like heroin!" Me - "no!!!!" Dealer-"ok, how bout taxi" Me- AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Like I said it ... read more

Today saw the Scooby gang visit S21 - the HQ of the Khmer Rouge prison/slaughter system - and the Killing Fields where over 8000 skulls are now housed in a small pagoda type arrangement as a permanent reminder of the atrocities that occured there. S21 was pretty funky (and NOT in a cool Chopper kind of way). We first watched a film relating mainly to a husband and wife seperated by the regime and the horrors they had to endure before they were eventually killed...... also had some footage of ex guards who themselves were mainly forced into the positions they were in......although i found it a little hard to swallow one guys....."i only hit 5 people across the back of the head...i didn't kill anybody".......... Many of the original cells remain......... there are also many ... read more

(Righto Righto we know we've been slack but yes we're still alive and yes we've been busy burning CDs and thanks to all of you that care.) After spending the morning in Battambang checking out one of the local temples on a hill with fantastic "Pan-o-ramic" views over the whole district we returned to Battambang a different shade of brown to when we left. Andrew having taken his own bike following Michelle and her driver. The roads we're fantastic!! Dusty, full of potholes and with the occasional massive truck that would be coming at you on the wrong side of the road. After our 'incident' at Ankor we were surprised that we hadn't encountered more like them. We returned to find Christopher waiting for us and Mont still hoarded up in his room - 'acclimatising' to ... read more

The Saying Almost as ubiquitous as the cheesy Che Gueverra shirts are these that carry the slogan "Same Same"and on the back "But Different". Apparently this is one of those European sayings that gets lost in translation- at least thats how it was described to me. But I figure it fits quite nicely to describe the difference in ambience and atmosphere between Phenom Penh and Bangkok. Same tactics from the tuk tuk drivers but no T.A.T. Same prostitution, unfortunately younger prostitutes. Our dinner tonight consisted of some sweet shiskabab, and the setting sun, as well as the spectacle of some 35+year old sleezy (and drunk) aussie getting the attention and massage a girl no older than 14. For a large portion of our travels in Cambodia- our only means of communication has been crude gestures for ... read more

A little history on Cambodia so our entry makes some sense. As mentioned in our previous blog, Cambodia was ruled by the Khmer Regime, which in its early days was a successful empire, spreading into Thailand and Laos. In the 1500's, the Thai invaded Angkor and the latter years would be considered Cambodia's Dark Ages. Soon after, the capital was moved to Phnom Penh, where several rivers connected and new trading channels were opened. In the 1800's, the French established a protectorate and ruled for 90 years. In 1953, sly Cambodian leader Sihanouk was able to assist his country in gaining independence. Not much later, Sihanouk granted the Northern Vietnamese army passage through Cambodia in order to flank the Southern Vietnamese. The Southern Vietnamese' allies, USA, quickly started mass bombings and infesting the land with mines. ... read more

Hi Folks, Greetings from the capital. Myself and Amy have survived today and what a day. Sometimes the trip to your destination is the more memorable part and today was no exception. I thought that we were used to rain but no. Phnom Penh really pees down to be polite in the monsoon season. Earlier we hired a tuk tuk (Cambodian mode of transport) to the Wildlife Park. The park is a foundation set up to look after injured animals and the animals can be viewed easily by wandering around the park. We saw bears, reindeer ( who had funny looking antlers on top of their head ), deer, elephants, monkeys, and crocadiles which Amy took a liking to; so brave, almost close enough to pat them on their head. Initially it was great and then ... read more

So it has been a couple of days since I last wrote and I thought Id let you all in on what Ive been up to. So, finishing Bangkok was very good. That city is sooooo friggin huge(13 million ppl) and full of annoying people! Anywho, I took that safari that I told you all about and it was definatley worth the 5 bucks it cost. First we went and got our tickets, which got us into everywhere (like seaworld) then we went on the safari. There was about 20 of us on the bus and the animals just went on with life. I saw everything from Zebras to Tigers! It was quite an amazing trip! After the safari the group went to all these shows. The first was a dolphin show where they had the ... read more
