From Inle Lake we took a taxi all the way to Mandalay. Now that might sound like something of an overindulgence but we weren't travelling directly there. Instead we wanted to visit the amazing Pindaya Caves along the way. Doing that using public transport would have been a torturous journey taking many hours and far too many connections, and we would not have been able to achieve that in one day. It cost $130 but in the end we felt it was money well spent. If you would like to arrange a driver to do this trip, you can find Mr Fatty on his Facebookpage and he'll arrange for one of his driver friends to meet you at your hotel. The route from Inle Lake to Mandalay via the Pindaya Caves is not for the faint ... read more

Up at 5.30am pick up at 7am from Hotel transfer to Airport flight to Heho. Breakfast packed for us by the hotel. Boiled egg and cheese sandwiches. Our lighters were confiscated but someone had a lighter in the smoking room. Flight was supposed to be 8.45am but at 8.30am everyone must have been on so we left. Croissant, cake, chocolate and a coffee served, not bad for a 1hr flight. Picked up by T2 ( Nyi Nyi Tun)and the driver Mr Shwa and 1hr drive to Pindaya very interesting a lot of farming of corn, Sweet Peas, Potatoes, Tomatoes, very rich soil. Stopped at a local store where they gave us a taste of pickled tea, passed bullocks carts and a lot of Chinese Buffulos. People still farm manually with bullocks. Very narrow road with lots ... read more

It was a beautiful few days without a ton of action, so I'm hoping this blog is long on photos and short on words... We left Hsipaw with the hopes of finding an overnight trek out of Pindaya, which is in eastern Myanmar. It was a fantastic decision. The weather is slightly cooler as it is at a higher elevation meaning we weren't sweating immediately upon stepping outdoors. There seems be less slash and burn agriculture in the area, making the vistas much clearer. And there are very few operations for hiking, so there are fewer tourists roaming the countryside making it more quaint. As we hiked the villagers were happily amused by our pressence in their neck of the woods, asking our guides where we were going, waving as we passed, and laughing as we ... read more

A shiver up my spine While waiting at Yangon airport for our flight to Heho I heard Ohnmar say "oh, there is Daw Suu Kyi", I quickly looked around and sure enough there was Daw Aung San Suu Kyi being to led to an airport bus to take her to board a flight to the political capital. I caught a quick glimpse of her on the bus and felt a shiver up my spine. Next, we saw all the airport staff standing on the tarmac waving off the plane she was travelling on. It was a fleeting glimpse of this amazing woman, which created a snapshot that will stay in my mind a long time. Bombing in Yangon On the flight to Heho, we read about a series of bombing attempts in Yangon which injured some ... read more

We left Kalaw, high in the hills of Shan state and drove toward Inle Lake. We saw overloaded vehicles on the way to market, women in fields cutting and threshing wheat. We stopped at a colorful market. I love markets. All colors and shapes of vegetables, fruits, dried fish, skewered eels, and cigar smoking women were there. I stopped to get a smear of thannaka, the light colored paste that so many women wear on their face to keep cool. The vendors were so patient and gracious, and loved seeing their photos. This helped them get over their puzzlement at the westerners staring at the strange produce. Then we stopped at Pandaya, an absolutely incredible natural cave that is filled with thousands of Buddha images. I thought the entrance was overwhelming with Buddhas, but there was ... read more
