After feeling considerably overwhelmed yesterday, several hours emailing, blogging, and messenging made me feel much more up to it.... I got dinner here in the hotel (I guess they serve food 24 hours, insane!!) -- I had chicken tandoori and garlic naan (yum!) all for 250 tk which equals, um, just over $3!!! A huge bottle of water is 30 tk (less than 50 cents). I showered, watched the tour de france (!) and slept for many hours, though woke up several times due to heat (I turned the a/c off silly girl), bizarre dreams, and lots and lots of honking as soon as the sun rose. Jon has arrived, we're off to the institution we're working with, locally nicknamed the cholera hospital. (several hours later...) We had a really great day today, we met with ... read more

I have now arrived and recovered (ooh, a tiny ghecko just ran past my keyboard!) in Dhaka! I left Chartham at 8am yesterday and arrived at the hotel around 11am today (including a 6 hour difference from England, which means a 10 hour difference to the states). Luckily my 32kg pack seemed a lot more manageable for this trip! I flew with Emirates Air, which meant of course I stopped in Dubai! I wasn't overly thrilled by this first leg, we left 1 1/2 hours late, I was stuck next to the window (I know I know, I should appreciate that, but I just end up feeling trapped!), and Emirates doesn't seem to be exactly forthcoming with the drinks cart.... I did get to watch both Happy Feet (kinds dumb, really) and Pursuit of Happyness (super ... read more

If a rule is implemented in a 3rd world country and yet nobody knows about it, does the rule even exist??? I know you're waiting to hear all about Everest, but this is story is just too ribonkulous and needs to be written while she's still fresh. In order to save a couple hundy, I opted to have a 1 night layover in Dhaka, Bangladesh on the way to Nepal and upon my return to Bangkok. Don't feel bad if you dont know where Dhaka is either, I thought it was in India and was made to look like a fool when I went to the Indian Embassy and confidently told the employee that I was going to Dhaka...to which he laughed in my face and essentially said "are you retarded? Dhaka isn't in India"....I ... read more

I arrived back home in China last night, so may I first say xin nian kuai le, which is 'Happy New Year'. Today is the first day of the Chinese New Year, the year of the pig! Anyway, onto the subject of my blog....Bangladesh! 3 days before I left for China myself, back in August 2006, my parents left for Dhaka, Bangladesh, their new home for 3 years plus. I haven't had a chance to visit them and the country itself so my 5 week holiday was my chance! To get to Dhaka it's surprisingly easy from this side of China anyway. There are daily flights from Kunming-Dhaka (2 hours) and the flight from my home in Chengdu to Kunming only takes 1 hour, and there's only a 2 hour time difference, so all in all, ... read more

In the 40 minute night flight from Dubai to Oman they served us dinner with Gulf Air, I mean with Ryanair in Europe you don't even get water. In the later flight to Dhaka, Bangladesh, we arrived early morning. The plane was full of Bangladeshi laborers from the Gulf countries returning home for vacation. I think Roz was the only female in the airplane, and blond with blue eyes she made quite an impact with the locals. Every time she went up to the bathroom at the front of the plane you could see how every single row had the aisle passengers with their head tilted. And when she came back most must have had seriously injured their neck. There was our first taste of rock star fame. Even funnier got when the plane took ... read more

Political situation just suddenly in tight today. My colleagues have arrived but we were not suggested to go outside since violence and protest may go on... I am just like a prisoner stuck in the hotel room now...seeing the city from my cage...hearing all the police alarm and annoying beeping.... My mission of searching Robert Jai failed. ... read more

Never thought that I would be here but now I really am! Before I come all my friends asked me where "Bangladesh" is...actually it's east of India and only 4 hours flight from Hong Kong. This time I don't have a curry lunchbox photo to start with as I was taking the Thai Airline and the lunchbox on plane was in Thai style!! ... read more

Hi all! So it's been a while between blogs but I have good excuses all round! For about the last 2 weeks of my stay in Banlgadesh I got sick with a fever of about 38 to 41 degrees that lasted almost 2 weeks. Needless to say I felt CRAP, but am finally better, Hooray! Biggest thanks to Cam and Nic who looked after me and came with me for my blood test (didn't even hurt!). No Typhoid (Yay!) and just need to re-check the Dengue test back in Oz. Those things aside, I've said goodbye to my Banlga family and workplace and headed over the border to India. Kent and El, Nic's brother and his wife and also friends of mine from Australia joined us for the adventure which was great! You will be pleased ... read more

I was just waiting for an email to come before I headed off to bed and I decided to read through my blog postings. Wow, I can really be negative! I don’t think of myself as a naturally negative person, so I thought I should try and find the words to explain a little better what it is like to live in Bangladesh. The other day I had an interview with a foreigner on contract with the government, and she graciously suggested we meet at the Bagha Club, the club for British citizens. Given the changed rules at the Canadian Club, this was the first time I was able to go to a club and it was great to sit and have a beer by the pool as we chatted. After our formal interview we started ... read more
