ADMIRALTY BAY - JANUARY 23- A beautiful start to our final day in Antarctica waking up to views of beautiful Admiralty Bay. No fog this morning and the seas were calm. Disappointment when the captain announced that we would not be going to the Falkland Islands because of a weather forecast of 50 mph winds and we would be tendering in. So we will be going to Puerto Madryn, Argentina instead. Many of my ship mates were disappointed with the decision not to go to the Falkland Islands, but such is the nature of these itineraries. As a result of the decision, we will not see Elephant Island either. Frankly that is not a problem for me. So we are now headed north, back to shorter days and warmer temperatures. Saw some Orcas today but not ... read more

DALLMANN BAY, CUVERVILLE ISLAND AND PARADISE CHANNEL Sunday, January 20. Well we’re here! The morning was foggy but the sun broke through and the fog lifted about 1:00 pm. I spent the morning in a cooking class and then went to an early lunch in preparation for my old world/new world wine tasting. When the fog broke the glory of the Antarctic was all around me. We entered Dallmann Bay and everyone observed the beauty of the continent. I saw humpback whales, seals, various birds and penguins, penguins, penguins, penguins. Most of the day was spent just taking in the magnificent environment. Even the wine tasting program was held in the dining room so we had vision to see the “landscape” as we passed it. The commentators pointed out the various species and features of the ... read more

CAPE HORN AND DRAKE PASSAGE - Saturday. Last night we passed Cape Horn and entered Drake Passage. We rocked a little through the night. Daylight revealed fog and six foot swells. The staff indicated that what I experienced is fairly moderate for where we are. I like moderate when it comes to rough seas. Not many pictures today, I didn’t spot any sea life within camera range. Went to a lecture on Cape Horn and the Drake Passage which was good enough that I didn’t fall asleep during it. I can’t say the same about the movie “Antarctica Wildlife Adventure”. After lunch of salmon burger, I went to another beer tasting event. My partners (Mike and Chuck) and I won the trivia contest (again). Did some reading before anticipated Mass. The priest I like a lot. ... read more

I woke the next morning to the gentle rocking and rolling of the ship. We had entered the Drake. The weather was quite good so the seas were also not too bad – just a small swell. The day was largely spent viewing sea birds from out on the decks. Most of my previous knowledge on albatrosses centered around golf, but by the end of those two days I knew much more and spent a lot of time on deck trying to snap photos of them. They are huge birds. Their wingspans can be up to 3.5 metres! Roughly twice my height. They like to circle and follow the boat as it churns up the little fishies in the water and also gives them some extra help with flying (they can fly for hours without flapping ... read more

Wednesday December 19, 2012 Mikkelsen Harbour and Cierva Cove We make it through the Drake Passage and are now in the South Shetland Islands. Francine is now vertical. The excitement to finally get onto land is overwhelming. We all hurry down to the zodiac boarding area to take the short ride to the island. We are going to see the penguins up close and personal. We were warned about the smell so we are somewhat prepared. The worst part was falling down through the softening snow and land in the penguin pooh! The Gentoo penguins were so much fun to watch. The best and most favored nesting sites are the ones at the top of the mountains/rock hills. It is so amazing that they climb all that way and back down again to get food and ... read more

We sailed from Ushuai across the drake passage for two days, then landed at on the south shetlands Islands. We continued to head south for the Antarctic circle, which we eventually got too All the penguins, seals and wildlife and the shear scale of the place were breathtaking Here's a snapshot of my best pics... read more

15thJanuary We made it to 65 degrees yesterday afternoon before being forced to turn round because of fog and ice in a narrow channel. We got just beyond Palmer station, which is a US research facility. We have 16 of their scientists on board who came by two zodiacs from the station yesterday afternoon. They came aboard up a rope ladder apparently to deck 3! - I don't know how, or if, they are going back to their station, as we are cruising away from it now. They gave a talk on their work yesterday and we are being encouraged to approach them where ever we see them around the ship but you know what we British are like - we would not even talk to them in the dining room (where they were eating for ... read more

November 3rd 2011 To say the little man is excited this morning is an understatement. It is the first morning he has been out of bed before me since August 1st!! We are finally onboard MS Fram for our trip to Antarctica. They have confiscated everyones alcohol as apparently it is now against Norwegian law to bring aboard alcohol and drink it. Some people have really been upset about it, but we'll just drink ours when we get back to BA. The ship is fantastic. The cabin isnt as dodgy as I thought it was going to be LOL. Single beds (whats new!), a TV that actually shows TV and movies as well as ship info, and a decent size bathroom. The expedition team look like they are going to be good fun. They all specialise ... read more

"The Danks - Sold Me Out" "Radiohead - The Reckoner" "The Doves - Satelites" I wasn´t sure what to expect while on board the Antarctic Dream. I had heard various opinions about the boat, the trip and the staff. The only constant was that the scenery was friggin amazing. So I decided to board the boat with an open mind and try to leave any expectations behind. That´s a lie, I had high expectations! I thought I might be stuck on board with 70 or so old rich people from around the world. I was worried that it would be early nights occupied with book reading and solitaire. I was a bit nervous to meet my roommate, hoping for someone around my age who didn't snore, smell and would be nice and relatively normal! Well, to ... read more

"Craig Cardiff - Dearest When You Called" "Craig Cardiff - Dirty Old Town" "Craig Cardiff - Smallest Wings" "Craig Cardiff - When People Go" Antarctica, I´m not sure how to describe it! I would like to gather the greatest poets and see what they have to say! However not our best poets or most skilled photographers and painters could capture the natural beauty that Antarctica has to offer. It is simply mind blowing on so many different levels. After a long journey across the Drake you awake to your first glimpse of Antarctica early in the morning. It´s much like Christmas, only a thousand times better! Penguins jumping in the water doing their best to imitate Dolphins, soaring Albatroses and Curious Seals over whelm your senses. And you haven't even had the chance to scan the ... read more
