Kariba Town is on the Zimbabwe side of Lake Kariba. Part of the Zambezi river, it is considered the world’s largest man-made lake by volume. A dam was constructed in the Kariba gorge for hydroelectric purposes which affected the home of the local river god “Nyami Nyami.” Literally translated the name means “meat meat.” Idk…anyways, the lake is beautiful but the wildlife is even more so! I got to camp by myself, again, which means all the animal sightings were seen only by me and the few staff that was around. Kariba Town is known for the heat and said to be the hottest place in Zimbabwe. Well I can tell you when the sun woke me up at 6:30am after cracking the horizon for about 15 minutes, I immediately thought of swimming in the lake, ... read more

As the kitten stalks the hippo, the dog chases the elephant while the stuffed lion looks over the bar. Guests get drunk while the hyena looks angry and the wild animal circus begins. With no fences or national park boundaries wild animals are free to wonder through the campsite. Elephants and hippos are a common sight while crocodiles eyeball you for dinner. Pitching your tent between hippo footprints and elephant dunn on the wildlife highway is an unnerving experience. Sitting back and relaxing at Warthogs bush camp overlooking lake Kariba truly is in a class of its own After an exhausting 7 hour chicken bus journey North West from Harare I found myself well and truly off the backpacker trail. With only a handful of travelers passing through, you are quickly welcomed into the local community. ... read more

It was the morning of my 31st birthday and we woke up on a smelly train, as it pulled into a small station in the middle of Nowhere, Zimbabwe. It was 1.30am. We gathered our bags, got off the train and walked over to the Ladies Waiting Room, found some comfy seats and tried to get back to sleep. The station manager locked the door. At least we were safe. After a few hours of 10 minute sleep intervals, the door was unlocked again at 6am. We got a local to drive us to the nearest highway, listening to the same African song playing over and over again for about half an hour. Something about a man cheating on his wife. We paid the driver with our remaining Botswana cash, chucked our bags in the dirt ... read more

Hyena is alive with excitement at the thought of entering our next country, about which we;ve all heard so much but know little of what to expect. Unfortunately, we’re only entering Zimbabwe briefly for a few days cruising on Lake Kariba, but as we’re the first Absolute Africa truck to enter for 18 months, we feel a bit adventurous. We enter Zimbabwe (avoiding the hawkers on the Zambia side selling fake Zimbabwean Dollars - the hundred trillion dollar note being the favourite) over the Kariba Dam - a stunning border crossing over the high dam wall, built in the 1950s in a combined hydro-electric project by Zambia and Zimbabwe (then known as Rhodesia). The result, Lake Kariba, is Africa’s largest man-made lake. After posing for photos next to the ‘Welcome to Zimbabwe’ sign (which, comically, is ... read more

I stayed here for a week with some close friends in April. April was the perfect time to go as it was not too hot, but there was plenty of sun to enjoy and the sunsets over Lake Kariba were stunning. The whole island is a resort, but not as in the Disney sort, but more of an eco lodge. Spurwing Island sits on the southern (Zimbabwe side) part of the lake near Sanyati Gorge. From the town of Kariba it is about a 40 km boat ride to the island. Its not near any towns or villages, because the island butts up against the majestic Matusadona hills, which provide the backdrop for the scenery there. The Matusadona hills are apart of a huge game reserve and is where the safaris are done while you are ... read more

Nkwazi Safaris is a small company that operates 2 large house boats out of Lake Kariba. My wife and I have the distinct pleasure of riding on both of these beautiful boats over the course of a week during our trip to Kariba. The two boats - each sleeping 8 people (not including the crew) with a max capacity for 16 people - are in the process of being remodeled this year. Their names are the Lady May, and Salon Prive. Lady May just went through an extensive power plant upgrade and Salon Prive will be getting some new bathrooms shortly. Each boat has a master suite in the back down stairs - all cabins are in the lower deck - and each has its own bath room. The middle deck houses lounges and dinning rooms, ... read more

Lunched in Mzozu on Tuesday before heading to Nkata Bay Curio markets. I traded clothes, a pillow, toothpaste, a book & a sandwich for various wooden souvenirs. I was so organized I even bought my Secret Santa present & silly gift for our Christmas day game. We continued on to Chinteche Beach, I had a couple of drinks before dinner & an early night. Wednesday was pretty cool because somebody came up with the idea at breakfast to play Beach Olympics. We picked four teams from a hat. Mine was named Yok's Pussy Possy because we had one male competitor (Yok) & four females; all other groups had two men & three women. The opening ceremony took place at 11am & we got through six of the ten events before breaking for lunch. Firstly we had ... read more
