Week 5 was bittersweet as we said goodbye to our communities and ventured back to Mbarara. With that said, we are excited to be reunited with the rest of the Canadians with whom we have been separated from for the past month. The other girls enjoyed their experience in the rural mountain community of Ruhija. Rene, Well I must say out of the bad comes the good. With last week being harder than most, this last week has been the total opposite. My Sunday began with finding a hidden little gem called the “coffee and pizza press”, pronounced as PEE-ZZZAAA. It wasn’t until we seen the writing “pizza” that I realized everyone who spoke of this place was talking about pizza the whole time. That or I was mainly focused on the coffee aspect of the ... read more

Week three and four have come and gone. This blog post will encompass the past two weeks as we have fallen a wee bit behind on our entries. (Let’s blame this on the fact that we’ve been having too much fun.) We had a number of new experiences in the health centre including time in the operating room assisting to care for newly born c-sectioned babies, hosting immunization clinics, dispensing medication in the pharmacy, performing assessments in the out patient department, and making ward rounds. We spent Saturday, June 10 lounging by the pool at Kyengabi Crater Resort while enjoying western food. Sunday, June 11 called for a visit to The Cave; a local ecological tourist attraction. Here, we hiked and viewed "Dave's Cave" then toured the cultural museum onsite where we learned about historical African ... read more

PMT CT day ! Delivery day ! ???

! Enfin ! On retrouve petit à petit nos repères?... read more

Week two was spent hiking, assisting to deliver healthy babies, counselling and prescribing for HIV/AIDS clients, enjoying local cuisine, attending daily HIV/AIDS seminars, and paying a well deserved visit to King Fisher, a local resort. It's hard to believe that we have been in Rugazi for 12 days already. We are becoming more comfortable in the health centre and have found specific areas where our nursing expertise is an asset, such as the HIV/AIDS clinic, Antenatal and Out Patient Department. There are more than 120 languages spoken in Uganda with Runyancole being the native language in Rugazi. The language barrier poses the greatest challenge and we are realizing how much of our assessment and nursing work replies on spoken word. With that said, we have familiarized ourselves with basic lingo and have honed our miming and ... read more

We have made it to Africa! Long flight plans, extensive jet lag, figuring out how to use malaria nets, currency exchange, phone set up and exotic food choices were all part of the journey. With that said, we are grateful to be here. Introductions are customary, in both Canada and Uganda, and that is how we will begin our blog. We are a group of health science students and professionals affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan. Our group consists of 6 nurses (4 graduate and 2 registered), 2 nutrition students, and 1 pharmacy student. Many of us were strangers when we landed in Uganda but we have forged strong bonds in the short amount of time we have been together. As per usual, eating, sleeping, working, laughing, and sharing mutual frustrations brings people together. Our group ... read more

Our time in Mbarara went by quicker than any of us had really expected. It feels like we have only just begun to figure out our way around the multiple challenges faced in the hospital here. This week Carrie and I worked on the Male Surgical ward with patients recovering from or awaiting surgery. Britany spent her time in the Emergency department, Brooklyn was working in theatre and Joline was splitting her time between labour and delivery and pediatrics. Our final week was a short one as we left for Safari on Friday morning and many of us took Thursday off in order to pack and run errands. This week was a challenge for some of us as many began to feel burnt out and ready to head out on safari. It is difficult to explain ... read more

Two weeks have passed since my last entry, and exactly two remain until I hop on the plane back home. I have felt unwell as of late, and my energy is at an all time low, hence the neglect in keeping my writing updated… I spent the last couple weeks between the hospital and doing community projects. The community work included first aid training, which Dayna and I taught to a group of “paravets” – community workers who are trained in veterinary services to assist the goat keepers. The Vets Without Borders had organized an education day for the paravets, to refresh their skills on vaccinations, deworming, spraying for tics, etc., and asked if we could organize a component for human health as well. It was well received, the paravets had many questions and the presentation ... read more
