We were programmed to meet Norah to visit the Amabeere Caves this morning but rain made the world stop as boda drivers refused to come drive to town and very few people move in the rain. Florence used to call me a stupid girl when I tried because I was asking to get sick. Eventually the sky cleared and we were off to the caves. The caves are not very large, they are the only ones in Uganda with stalagmites, stalactites and aspheres. The other great feature is a waterfall you can walk behind. Today it was roaring due to the recent rainfall. Our guide Robert was very educated on the area: the cave history, the people who lived in them and the crater lakes. These lakes were formed by volcanic eruptions. The build up of ... read more

We spent the day with Norah‘s house with her family. As guests, we sat in the living area while the family prepared the meal. The good thing for us was Norah had invited her auntie’s kids (Jethro and Joseb) and their cousin Lena to spend the day at their house. While waiting, we taught the kids to play go fish and concentration. Jethro was very impressed with our bridge shuffle and spent time practicing that as well. When it was time to eat, the amount of food that came out was insane and Norah’s mother kept piling it onto our plates. It was delicious but so much and the explanation of which they prepared on coal stoves verses actual fires out back overwhelmed me. The entire family had spent all day preparing the meal. Norah’s mom ... read more

The morning started with an eventful bus departure. We were late for the bus but it hadn’t departed and as Shelby ran to the bathroom, I found seats. I asked the person next to me where he was heading. He said Kampala (Fort Portal and Kampala are not close). The bus started pulling out, Shelby wasn’t on the bus out, I was trying to get of to ask about the trek, and a worker was pounding on the bus trying to get it to wait for Shelby. As Shelby was jumping on I was trying to get off. I asked the worker if it was going to Fort Portal, he said there is no bus from Masindi to Fort Portal, you go to Kampala first than transfer. We got on the bus mentally preparing for the ... read more

In Fort Portal the gateway town for the Kibale Park we find the Dutchess restaurant/hotel. Run by a Dutch couple the LP considers this to be one of the best restaurants in the whole of Uganda. Not wishing to miss this opportunity we stop for a light lunch and then are delayed as - no surprise - after lunch the Rav 4 won't start. We call the hire company and within 15 minutes a local mechanic arrives and after some good diagnostics traces the problem to a poor transmission connector. This meant that the electronics dig not detect that the transmission was in Park so disabled the ignition circuit. He easily fixes this, but leaves me a wire so I can short this out just in case we have the same problem again. It turns out ... read more

The drive from Bwindi to Kibale (where we have a permit for Chimp trekking tomorrow) takes us up the western side of Uganda through the Queen Elizabeth National Park. We don’t expect that much from the park, but do want to try to find the tree climbing lions in the south of the park. The lions are actually quite easy to find – there are 6 in one tree but these are the only ones we see. I manage to bog the Rav4 in a boggy part of the trail. My travel companions are a bit worried about out pushing us out as we have just seen lions up the road, but another vehicles comes past soon and it doesn’t take too much effort to push us clear. We drive along the main road through the ... read more

Today is THE reason we have come to Uganda, to track Mountain Gorillas. There are only about 1000 Mountain Gorillas left in the world and about half of these live in the Bwindi Impenetrable forest where we are now. Other places where you can see them are Rwanda and the DRC, different countries but very close to Bwindi. The only way to see them here is to buy a permit from the Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA). There are only about 100 permits available each day and as they cost $600 per person it means that this isn’t a trip for everyone. In addition, the official line is that the permits are over-subscribed (ie hard to get), nothing is guaranteed, it's often wet and the trekking to find the gorillas can be tough, so tough in fact ... read more

ok, I know I just posted a blog, but thought I would post a couple more pics because right now we have very fast internet in Nairobi, and tomorrow we leave for a 4 day safari in the Masai Mara which I know i will have a gazillion photos. So, the 2nd Ugandan park with gorillas is called Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. And impenetrable it is. It was such a difference from Mgahinga in terrain. Mgahinga had some wide open areas where we were very lucky to see the gorillas. Bwindi has a narrow trail for a short distance and then it is up, as our guide slashed a 'trail' for us with his machete. The vines and trees were so dense that even as he slashed we had difficulty following. We were lucky that we ... read more

Africa » Uganda » Western Region » Mbarara June 28th 2018

I have been in Uganda now for 2 days and I already feel settled - it does feel like a home away from home. I have also already settled into my lovely soda addiction! Once I arrived from Entebbe to Mbarara I felt a rush of relief as I thought "okay this I know". The sights, the sounds and that very distinct Mbarara smell flooded me with memories. This town can be unforgiving but it can also bring you amazing opportunities to see the good in people. I am excited to continue our collaboration with MUST and I myself (along with the new students this year) had a formal tour of the hospital. Many things have changed since 2 years ago and I am happy to see they received more funding to expand certain wards like ... read more

I am coming yo my last hours in Mbarara (yes my last blog was just minutes ago but I could not get good enough internet to post it until now). I have set the students up as best as I can but am mostly feeling sad to be leaving this town. There are so many friends and experiences I want to have the chance to see and do but sadly I will not. I have made contact with a friend of mine from before named Shaay. He will be taking the students to do Afripads around Mbarara and other projects. He is a super interesting character as he is trained to talk to young women about safe and healthy sex. This is virtually unheard of here. Especially the idea that women can have a healthy sexual ... read more

We stayed in the Rafiki Guesthouse for three nights, Jan. 10-11-12. Eleven members of our group went gorilla trekking on the 11th. Our group of seven would go on the 13th. So we had two days to ourselves to prepare for the trek and recharge our batteries. The owner of the guesthouse had a number of tours planned for us - coffee plantations and the like, however Monica and I were quite content to clean our laundry and explore the town on our own. We had lunch a couple of times at a wonderful little place called the Coffee Pot. African coffee certainly is wonderful. So dark and rich. We also had lunch at a kind of guesthouse called the Traveler's Lodge. Very nice indeed. The food was great and the history of this place says ... read more
