Our time in Rugazi has come to an end. In only two more sleeps and I will be in a crowded van on my way back to Mbarara… The last week went well; I worked again in the inpatient ward, administering medications, performing IV starts, and scratching my head at some of the more troubling cases. There are really only a few courses of treatment provided here – antibiotics, malaria treatment, and fluid replacement. There were a couple of psychiatric cases the last couple weeks, and they receive an antipsychotic and/or mood stabilizer. The more time I spend at the clinic, the more I realize that a lot of what is done here is a crap shoot – different clinical officers prescribe different drugs and dosages for similar symptoms; antibiotics are used in abundance, I would ... read more

Today, and almost down to the hour of this post (in Africa not those still sound asleep in their beds back in Canada), marks my halfway point until I land back on Canadian soil. It is so hard to believe that I have already gone through half of my trip and have half to go. There are so many things I have done and seen while in this country that my blogs will never capture. It is hard to believe a life beyond this place as well. I have loved living here. The trials, ups, and downs that I have experienced here have been so amazing. Life back in Canada just seems so far away and...I just so simple to life here? I do not know how else to explain it. Working in the hospital 4-5 ... read more

I’m a little behind in blogging my adventure. But if you bear with me, I’ll catch you up. Last Saturday, three of the muzungus returned to Mbarara to start their hospital placements. Five of us elected to stay here in Rugazu and see through a little bit more of the community projects. Dayna and I are the remaining muzungus in Rugazi Group B and Jill, Joline and Carrie remained here to work with Group A. The past two weeks our group has been making a lot of headway on our community project. Our goal/objective (or “measurable result” as they call it here) is to increase the number of people using family planning in our village. Two weeks ago Britany, Dayna and I were stationed in OPD. The week was fairly standard, except for Thursday and Friday. ... read more

This week was a sad one. I had to say goodbye to my lovely community in Rugazi and embrace the new/old home of Mbarara. The clinic this week was CRAZY. The shop finally released all of the drugs this week and it seems like everyone and their family came with ailments of all sorts. I was in IPD (In-Patient Department) for this week and we had a very full ward! Some of the cases we saw were malaria again, we had a TB case with stage 4 HIV, some dehydration, and some that we had no clue what was going on. The saddest patient we had this week was a 6 year old boy who had severe malaria that developed into cerebral malaria with a possibility of bacterial meningitis. He came in at the beginning of ... read more

Another week down - oh, the tricks of time, weeks pass in the blink of an eye, but there are times when a half hour can feel so long… I have decided to remain on in Rugazi for the extra ten days. It was not an easy choice, but as I flipped through the pages of my journal seeking my answer, I remembered how excited I was when we were originally granted permission to stay the extra week and a half in the rural community instead of returning to the city. I decided I wouldn’t let my emotions or temper get in the way of that. Although it is difficult to work within the group and cultural differences sometimes, I decided that if I can get through working with this one man, then I should be ... read more

Well this week has been another busy week here in Rugazi. This was our fourth week here, and originally was going to be the last week for all the Canadian students. However, since the Ugandan students are staying another 5 weeks there are 5 Canadians who have decided to extend our stay here in Rugazi. We will be staying an extra 11 days and returning to Mbarara July 7 to join with the rest of the group working in the hospital there. We parted ways with Brooklyn and Britany on Saturday, who are now both in Mbarara and will be starting work at the hospital on Monday. I’m sure you are all wondering what we got up to this past week, so let me (Dayna) take you through our adventures. Sunday was Father’s day and Rugazi ... read more

Another week, another entry! This week you are stuck with me (Joline), as I take you through our third week in Rugazi, Uganda. It amazes me how fast the time has gone in the last few weeks, each day a brand new, unforgettable adventure. This week has been a whirlwind, making it very difficult to capture all of our activities in a single blog entry! Bare with me as I attempt to paint you a picture of our experiences. We kicked off the week visiting Kingfisher Pool (Dayna, Britany, myself, and some of the Ugandan students) and the House of Love Orphanage (Carrie and Brooklyn) on Sunday. That night we prepared a “Canadian” version of the taco for supper, with the substitution of chapatti for taco shells (which was even more delicious)! We stuffed our chapatti ... read more

This week has been a lot more involved with the community which has been amazing!!! At the Health Center we welcomed a few more members to our team and said goodbye to a lot of the students from KIU (Kampala International University) so it has been a huge learning curve for us as we have to take on way more patients but with way less people. We are doing great though and putting in the time we need for the most part! Seems like every week here there is a public holiday or some reason (usually rain) that invites several to not attend work. Speaking of the weather, we are seeing a shift to a wetter week and cooler temperatures. The locals are laughing at us Canadians out in our t-shirts finally feeling comfortable with the ... read more

This week was busy! There was not a lot for us to do in maternity so we tried to make ourselves useful in other places. Wednesday it was very cold and pouring rain. None of the Ugandan students woke up to go to work. The clinic is primarily staffed by students, so when we arrived at work, the outpatient clinic was open but no one was present to run lab tests. One quick training session later and my super nurses, Dayna and Britany, were drawing blood and running tests for HIV, malaria and TB. My job was to record the results in the laboratory test register and return the charts to the clinic officer. It was nice to do something different for a change. Thursday we all took an hour off in the morning to do ... read more

Sunday June 12th – Saturday June 18th, 2016 Welcome to my first blog entry ever, folks! Now, bear in mind with me as I try to sum up a week spent on top of a breath-taking mountain, surrounded by equally stunning other mountains, on the edge of the mysterious Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It’s now the 3rd week into our community placement with other Ugandan students, and one still has to give themselves constant reality checks in order to stop and appreciate that view. What view, you ask? “Welcome to the end of the world” – Gad Ruzaaza, June 14th 2016 The beginning of our week started out with a bang – Richele Berzolla’s 24th birthday!
