Background: After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule.

Hello! *Caution this blog contains some sensitive topics I think this is a record, a new blog two weeks in a row! I had a full weekend and I am looking forward to a full week. While I didn’t have much time to sleep this weekend it was probably one of the best I have had here so I wanted to get some photos up right away. I will be adding more photos to this blog as I get them from friends but here is a start. I started my weekend on Friday with a Rotary lunch and then hurrying home [View Full Entry]

Today is a chilly, rainy day. I would prefer a warm sunny day, but the rain is soothing and the day is relaxing. We grudgingly left Leuwenvoet House at 9:30 this morning, saying good-bye to Frankie (our resident cat) and the two wonderful women who were our hosts -- and who seemed to work 24 hours a day. Brian drove us to the bottom of the cable car for a view through the clouds -- a view of Cape Town and sea beyond. Suprisingly, the cable car was running despite the think tablecloth of clouds draped over Table Mountain. Even though [View Full Entry]

Hello all! Just got an email from Helen Holly Hoff this morning instructing me to write more often for you ... so strap on the safety harness cause here we go. Quick note: I was up until 130 in the morning last night going through wedding photos so I may or may not make much sense ... and go on irrevelant tangents ... or just pass in and out of consciousness. I guess I should be the one getting the harness out. Alright .... Since I last wrote there have been plenty of exciting events that have taken place ... most [View Full Entry]

Wednesday, Nov 4 - Cape Town Well, Rob left yesterday and I'm on my own again. He was great company and I am going to miss him, as I miss all of my kids. This morning I caught my flight from Nairobi to Cape Town. Who would have guessed that it was an 8 hour trip - 4 hours to Joburg, a 2 hour lay over, and a 2 hour flight to my final destination. Africa is a big continent!! My friend John Jesson, our tour guide on the motorcycle trip with Ayres Adventures met me at the airport. I did [View Full Entry]

Saturday 7th November An overcast day, windy but dry. The previous day we’d decided to go and look at the Winelands, and in particular the Fairview Winery where I’d been in 2006 on the cricket tour. Not so much for the wine tasting but because I’d recalled that the Winery also sold very tasty cheeses. So we set off north up the N1 Motorway following the signs for Paarl about 35 miles north of Cape Town. The motorway was in excellent condition and if the weather had been better it would have been a great drive. However, the very strong crosswind [View Full Entry]

[I am going to start by typing exactly what is in my journal. However, this was a very long and full day and I only had time to write a few paragraphs. At some point I will come back and write more in retrospect.] At Breakfast Slept very well again but still not quite long enough. Each night I hope for eight hours but experiencing the day and night seems so much more important than sleeping. This morning's yoga practice was much better -- the stiffness from 24 hours of airport/airplane time is finally receding. Midnight What a day! No time, [View Full Entry]

Thursday 5th November Got up and looked out the window at……….. RAIN! Just what we’d come here to avoid. Luckily it started to clear later in the morning so we headed off towards False Bay on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula. Conveniently the motorway out of Cape Town begins close to our hotel (the downside being that the traffic noise can be a bit loud in the mornings), so it was an easy drive through the leafy suburbs of Constantia (the prime real estate in Cape Town) and along to False Bay. The East coast of the Cape Peninsula [View Full Entry]

The forecast is for today to be the best weather of our three days in Cape Town, so Jessy has rearranged our itinerary a bit. Instead of city activities today, we have been driving along the coast. It is a gorgeous day -- blue skies, some white fluffy clouds, warm and breezy. We are driving alongside the Atlantic, which is crashing powerfully onto rock and sand beaches. We have just stopped at the "end of the world", billed as the southwestern most point of Africa (which actually doesn't make a lot of sense to me when I look at a map, [View Full Entry]

Saturday-- there I was, sitting in a loud smokey pub- surrounded by farmers clad in shorts and safari shirts-- straight out of the movies-- really enjoy that though-- sitting there with Neil, he is already drunk I think, from the brandy he had been drinking all day. he has been out sick from work--which just means he gets to drink more brandy -- the rugby match has started and everyone is yelling--cheetahs--blue bulls , seems to be split-- across the room two TV sets jarring the sound of fans cheering along with those cheering here in my surrounds. it is one [View Full Entry]

We are flying over desert -- it looks as if we are over the surface of another planet. We left home about 13 hours ago, flew through Amsterdam (three hour layover) and have 8 hours left of this flight. Today's destination: Cape Town, South Africa. I have never been this far from home. However, flying is a bit like suspended animation -- a slightly annoying and very cramped pause, after which you happily disembark in a new location. So I don't feel very far from home, until I look out the window and feel as if I am on Mars. Counting [View Full Entry]
