Background: After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule.

We had 4 nights, 5 days in Cape Town and no idea where to start and what to do! We were so used to being in the tour group where everything had been done for us so we had to get used to being in charge of ourselves again. So our first day in Cape Town was spent doing very little, getting our bearings and deciding what we should do for the rest of our stay here. The next day was a beautiful day, so we went up to see what Table Mountain was all about. The queue was sooooo long, [View Full Entry]

Today the only agenda is Table Mountain, the sun has briefly appeared and I took the chance of going to Table Mountain to try my luck (they said the cable car was working). As luck would have it, when I got to the foot of the mountain, I was told the cable car is closed for the day, too windy :( Guess, have to do Table Mountain on another trip :( Spent the rest of the day chilling by the Waterfront (had food at an Indian restaurant "Jewel of India", was craving some desi food, but the food/service was average and [View Full Entry]

Well I have now reached the last day. I have been back in Cape Town now for about a week and managed to see Robben Island, tour of cape point, go up table mountain and various other sights. Its all been such an amazing adventure can't quite believe it's nearly over, but all good things must come to an end or so they say, well my last day is a lovely sunny affair what a nice last day. It true to say that the Western Cape has definately got under my skin and I will be sorry to leave but also [View Full Entry]

Hi all, Apologies for the delayed blogging - things have been a bit hectic. Jared & Megan's Wedding was beautiful. It was a good mix of people, and the venue was gorgeous. At one point, there was a bit of worry that the ceremony would not be able to be outside, but fortunately the weather permitted. After the wedding we hung around the area and did a bit of the Midland’s Meander. On Saturday we went to Tala Game Park [View Full Entry]

Wrote this part at 6am in Wilderness: I talked to the girls at midnight on the deck, and finally the clouds had completely blown away. There was a full blanket of stars! After so many cloudy nights, it was wonderful to see them. So many stars that I could not recognize any constellations due to the noise of the "extra" stars. The girls are doing fine although Kimberly does obviously miss me very much. It's now almost 6am - I woke up at 5 and couldn't get back to sleep so I came out here, back out on the deck. I am writing with some time lag, thanks to travel and limited access to net. There is a song by "Crowded House", "Always Take the Weather With You". Well, I did bring the weather with me, but just the wrong kind. After the first day being half decent (sunny), 10th (and its 12th today and the weather hasnt improved) saw temperature dropping to 13-14 degrees with wind speed consistently around 50 kpmh. That meant, Table Mountain was out of question, the cable car is shut and hiking is not allowed. So I went to Hout Bay, a small fishing village in [View Full Entry]

We got up very early this morning and left Franschhoek at 8am. About 1/2 hour into our drive we (finally) met a family of baboons. We saw 8 adults and a juvenile; they were playing/foraging at the side of the road. Brian pulled over so we could take photos -- but we did not get out of the car (to avoid having our passports stolen by the baboons -- not a joke!) Later on we saw a momma with a tiny baby clinging to her back. We drove for four hours with one main stop (at the "Country Pumpkin") -- and [View Full Entry]

Anyone like a glass of wine? We were not in South Africa too long before we were at a winery tasting the nectar of the Gods. Our second night was spent camping at a small vineyard (Highlanders) where we sampled some of the local wines - sensory sensational. The last day of our 42 day overland trip saw us passing through beautiful wine growing regions before we saw our first glimpse of Table Mountain, signaling our arrival to the Mother City - Cape Town. Cape Town is an alluring city that although is very cosmopolitan still has a wild African flavor [View Full Entry]
