Lou and Di are off on another adventure, to South Africa and Zambia this time. It's to mark the 40th birthday of one of us, (and a VERY VERY belated one of the other.) Well, preparations are almost complete, bar last minute adjustments, like what can we leave out of the suitcase in order to meet weight regulations. Excitement is gradually mounting. We expect to arrive in Johannesburg bright eyed and bushy tailed(?)after an 11 hour overnight flight , courtesy of Mr Branson. We have 1 day/night to relax and soak up some SUN (it's snowing here as I write!!!) at an airport hotel, before air transfer on Tuesday to Livingstone in Zambia, where we hope to be amazed and wowed by Victoria Falls and the mighy Zambesi River. Hopefully we will then be able to ... read more
My picture doesn’t show the cold drink bottles very well, but do you remember one of the cultural conundrums I wrote about? Why do people put the plastic bottles filled with water out on their lawns? Notice that they are spaced around on the grass, but the bottles are never opened to water the grass. The answer that Shilpa (the previous PCV here) and I received from various neighbors is this: The bottles discourage dogs from pooping on the lawn. .......OK..... can this really work? I don’t know...maybe some of you want to give it a try.... read more
Lesotho - Blog One December topics to write about are: SA26 wraps up their first 3 months at sites with IST (In Service Training) in KwaZuluNatal Province and my first Christmas with my host family here in Mpumalanga Province. Sandwiched in between was my trip to Lesotho which needs to be told FIRST while it’s still fresh in my mind. Blog One is an odd assortment of details, Blog Two is about getting around by public transport (featuring The Bus Ride from Hell), and Blog Three is the treasured parts (where I try to restrain my raptures about Lesotho weavers so I don’t bore most of you). School starts back up Jan 7 in Mpumalanga and Jan 14 in KZN so PCV’s have a nice long break. Two groups of ten PCV’s planned 5- 6 day ... read more
Christmas celebrations done and dusted. What a a wonderful day spent celebrating with family and friends and chatting on the telephone with family far away that couldn't be with us. Over indulgence seems to be the key word on Christmas Day. Who can resist a second helping of mom's traditional trifle? The secret to its success is the copious amounts of sherry poured over the sponge cake, which of course makes it the best trifle around! We decided today was a good day to walk off some calories, so ambled down to the harbour and walked next to the sea. There was a continuous stream of boats entering and leaving the harbour. It was so enjoyable to take a leisurely stroll with a bit of a sea breeze blowing off the sea, as it was a ... read more

First off, Merry Christmas to everyone! I don't have much time as I leave to start my little holiday trip in less than an hour. The last few days have been quite fun for us here at Open Arms. Father Christmas was a little late coming in last night but thankfully he made it and as the kids ran into Emmanuel Hall for chocolate chip pancakes this morning, all the presents and stockings were there. In addition to the presents provided by Father Christmas, the East London Rotary Club also presented each child with a gift. We gave the Rotary Club a little insight into each child so everyone was really happy with their gifts! Instead of writing all of the children's reactions, I decided to include a bunch of pictures of today's events. We all ... read more
Rest, relaxation and gluttony!
Published: December 20th 2012Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » GansbaaiFor once I am blogging in the present and not past blogs! It's December and the festive season is upon us. It is time for Christmas holidays and we are going to visit family and friends and spend some time in Gansbaai, territory of the Great White Shark. And NO, I am not going diving with them! First of all, I am a fair weather diver, so I won't be putting my foot in that cold water, let alone a limb or two that could become a tasty morsel for the shark. But you can dive in a cage, you will say. My reply: those cages look far too flimsy for me and I am not a fan of chumming to attract the sharks. (I must confess I do my own chumming, but that's another story....) ... read more
First, as it is nearing Christmas time I thought I would ask everyone to consider a donation to Open Arms. As you have read in my past few blogs, it is a really special place with many special children. We are committed to guiding these 51 kids to reaching their fullest potential and that is impossible without your assistance as Open Arms Home for Children is totally dependent upon donations from individuals in the United States. Please take a moment to look at our website and consider donating any amount! If every person who reads this blog donates $20, we would be able to pay a whole year’s worth of schooling for one child! It’s that easy to make a difference. And most importantly, I am currently here to witness that all of that money goes ... read more
