Background: After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule.

C& [View Full Entry]

Sun 18 Oct So, my treat tonight was dinner at Le Bon Vivant. It does the most divine food that is so attractive you feel you ought to frame it rather than eat it. It mixes unusual flavours and uses modern cooking techniques and has a similar reputation to the Fat Duck, Bray, England. I am sorry but you are going to have to endure a blow by blow description of the meal I had there. I suggest you skip this blog if you are hungry or are just having a sarnie at your desk. As I said, Franschhoek is just [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! Phew! All I am doing right now is taking a deep breath! As I have told many of you September was a very challenging month for me, to say the least. I am not exactly sure how I thought I could work part time, write a proposal, and finish my courses all at the same time! I also was dealing with some health issues which added stress. They say the only way to really know a country is to spend time in its hospitals and prisons, I guess I partially know South Africa and I am in no hurry [View Full Entry]

Spring!

After a trip to Frankie's Bar on Wednesday night we woke up early on Thursday morning to start our 9 hour drive up to the Kruger National Park in the north east of the country. It was a long journey covering long open roads that appeared endless at times and travelling through tiny villages. I also saw yet another side to South Africa that i haven't seen before. Large shanty towns lined some of the roads and I noticed a big move away from the arguably "western" style of living seen on the coast. We arrived at the gate to the [View Full Entry]

TIA (This is Africa) Africa » South Africa
South Africa is a place where you can go and do anything that you want to do. Are you thinking, okay, but I can do anything I want anywhere I am? Maybe, maybe not. What I mean is that in South Africa you can jump out of a plane, sightsee as a tourist, swim with sharks, shop in high-end designer stores, build a house in a township, cycle in the wine lands, go to a soccer game, listen to the obscure, but awesome click language, buy an Aston Martin (3rd largest market for AM), go to the opera, study an ancient [View Full Entry]

The last time we were here in the South African winelands was at the very beginning of this trip back in December. Before we arrived then I hadn't known anything about the winelands, or the town of Stellenbosch other than it was close to Cape Town international airport, we like wine, it seemed like a good place to begin in South Africa. Back then we went on a mini-bus tour of the winelands run by the backpackers we were staying at 'The Banghoek Place'. After this little taster at the vineyards and seeing some of the scenery we realised we should [View Full Entry]

NB. YOU CAN double click on the photos to enlarge them or start a slideshow. Wed 14 Oct Anybody that knows me really well will be aware that wine is one of my top ten favourite things. OK, it probably makes it into the top 5. Therefore I am in heaven here in the wine country, with hundreds of vineyards, wine farms and wine shops. When I went to dinner last night the wine list (that guaranteed that all the wines listed were just from this valley) ran to several pages. Overwhelmed with the choice I opted for the house dry, [View Full Entry]

From27 September to 2 October we travelled the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth to catch up with my folks and some old friends and then travelled back via the Karoo. We had a couple of giggles along the way, especially memorable was waiting behind a car at the petrol station wondering what the hold up was, when the petrol attendants came over to push start the car out of the garage we had our answer....Africa. While in the Eastern Cape we took the opportunity to visit some game parks and go on safari to get up REAL close to some animals [View Full Entry]

Karoo Africa » South Africa
On the way back from the Eastern Cape we went via the Karoo. We had booked into the spa in Calitzdorp but the accomodations were so rubbish Gary was forced to go out organise a plan B. Luckily, in an area with very little, we found a little paradise just down the road. We were told there were hot pools and set off that evening for a swim. We couldn understand why the pools were cold and full of frogs, but under the circumstances, we weren complaining. Later that night, over dinner, we realised that we had swam in the wrong [View Full Entry]
