Today we hiked up Stellenbosch Mountain. The view from the top was beautiful, you could see Simon's Mountain, Cape Town, False Bay, Hermanus, and the coast. It was goregous to be able to see mountains and oceans. The hike was difficult for me as I hadn't been hiking in awhile. It took us about 7 hours total including the walk from his flat to the mountain then up the mountain back down and walking back to his place. At his place his flatmates had made a big pancake dinner with all sorts of toppings for everyone. The pancakes were very thin, like crepes. The Germans put ham and cheese on their's which I also thought was quite good. The rest of the evening we were thoroughly exhausted and did nothing which was wonderful ... read more

The first day I was at Stellenbosch Dale and I walked around the town, went grocery shopping, and had coffee and milk tart (this sort of cinnamon-tasting flan like dessert) at this adorable cafe in the campus' botantical garden. The surrounding mountains were so beautiful they reminded me of the Isle of Skye, they have this surrealistic enchantment. Last night we hung out upstairs with other international students, most of whom were German. We drank a container of boxed wine that had broke and had been put into a bowl. I quickly befriended Dale's flatmate Micha. The next day we had planned to go to Jonkershoek (http://www.capenature.org.za/index.php?fSectionId=55) but the weather was bad. Instead we hung out in his flat just enjoying being together, went to a movie, and went to sleep. ... read more

Hermanus Rach hid huddled under the duvet most the night having nasty spider nightmares but no shark dreams for some reason! We decided to visit Hermanus on our way to Stellenbosch, to spot some whalies. We had dropped by Hermans the previous afternoon, but now the waves were crashing all over the rocks, washing over the lower terraces of the seafront restaurants. We had been lucky to get a shark dive yesterday morning, as yesterday afternoon and today's trips had been cancelled due to rough sea conditions. So a whale watching cruise was out of the question, but this was fine as locals had already explained the whales come right into the bay and you can see them easily from the cliff tops. Sure enough, as soon as we parked up at the look out point, ... read more

Hello! I am so sorry that I haven't written a blog yet, but there has been seriously not a moment of free time since I arrived until now (and even now, I only have 20 minutes before I have to go back so that the TV crew can film us "walking slowly to rehearsal" - those were our instructions). I do have some stories written on my laptop, but there is no wireless and now I am in an internet cafe... so I suppose a short update is better than nothing at all! Most of it will probably be random because I don't have the energy to organize it into lovely paragraphs and also I'm kind of rusty because I haven't written coherently in English for a long time. Actually, I can barely speak coherently in ... read more

Saturday, Professor Uphoff (the coordinator of our trip), had organized a group wine tasting tour of the Stellenbosch region just outside of Cape Town. A lot of South African wine is produced here, and my professor is really in love with the wine here, so we knew it was going to be a good time. I have to admit, I was a bit apprehensive about taking off for a wine tasting tour at 9am, but seeing as how we had an hour long bus ride, and a talk about the different winemaking processes, I only started consuming wine at 11:15 am, which is only moderately alcoholic. The first winery we went to was called Lounsford, and was the biggest winery we visited. Very commercial, but the grounds were well maintained and quite beautiful, with peacocks ... read more

Rob and I got up early on Tuesday morning and headed for Stellenbosch. After only a few mistaken turns (eep) onto the wrong side of the road, Rob mastered the skill of left-sided driving. Stellenbosch is a beautiful old university town about 45 minutes north of Capetown. The university dates back to the 1600's and it is one of the only schools that still teaches everything in Afrikaans. We wandered around the town for the morning and early afternoon, then headed to wineries in the afternoon. The area around Stellenbosch is speckled with vineyards and is a wine-tasters paradise. Our first stop was at Spier, a very commercialized place. They also have a cheetah sanctuary (though I wasn't very impressed with the way they keep their animals). The wine was ok, but nothing to write ... read more

Today a day in the life of Tommy and Eileen woke up, this morning at Whale song lodge to go Shark diving. We were booked through our Inn, and arrived at the diving site around 8:00am. We were with people from Australia (Tanzania) and Africa to name a few. Once we took off on our 42 ft shark cage fishing boat called Barracuda, we realized it was a little shadier operation than we anticipated. I don’t discourage anyone from ever trying this experience but, I guess the regulations are very different for tourism/boating in Africa. Anyway, we were barely given instruction except to put on this wet suit, and me, Tommy and 3 others were instructed to jump into the ocean, in a cage that was submerged into the ocean. The cage had to be like ... read more

I got up around 7am Friday morning to head to Stellenbosch, which is in the winelands region just outside Cape Town and home to S.A.’s main university. I took the Backpacker Bus (which charged R180 - about $27), which ended up being basically a private taxi ride—they picked me up at my hostel at the designated time and drove me straight to my accommodation in Stellenbosch—and I had the van to myself. Once we’d gotten out of Cape Town, there were shantytowns—called townships here—as far as the eye could see, stretching out on either side of the freeway. It was like that for nearly the entire rest of the way. (I have since come to learn that it’s pretty much like that outside every town.) It was quite a depressing contrast to cosmopolitan Cape Town. ... read more

PE , J-Bay , StellenboschJohn and Claire Wood We didn't stay in PE long, now this was not because we had a note from our mum, but because PE is the nickname for a place called Port Elizebeth. It didn't appeal to us so we arrived at 10:30 PM and left the following day at 7:30 on the BAz BUs. Truth be told it actually looked ok. It's quickly become obvious that we just don't have enough time here. The place is massive with loads of places to visit with an infinate amount of things to do. You need at least 6 weeks to scratch the surface and ideally three months to get stuck in. We have only three and a half weeks which is still a good holida time but not enough for South Africa. ... read more

We were on the road from Oudtshoorn to Stellenbosch a little later (as we didn't get back to our hostel until 11am...due to Meerkat Magic) the morning of the 29th. The drive was beautiful, as we drove up Route 62 through some small wine towns. The road took us through canyons with streams, and by large boulders and rock formations...very similar to Highway 6 around Golden, Colorado. The drive turned out to be about 5 hours, so upon our arrival (since it was a Sunday), all of the wineries were already closed for the day; not to worry, as we would more than make up for it on Monday (30 April). Our guesthouse (de Oude Ryneveld--don't ask me what that means) was very lovely. Our room had a high vaulted ceiling with wooden beams mixed ... read more
