I have been living in Stellenbosch for three months now and the oak-lined streets, the mountains glowing orange with each sunset, the Afrikaans language that floats around the campus and fills the background of my thoughts—these features and a thousand others greet me everyday. Slowly but surely they have become the sensations of home, the everyday commonalities that I hardly notice but cannot imagine Stellenbosch without. This process of Stellenbosch becoming my home has been marked by countless distinct experiences, snapshots that so clearly displayed the reality of this place. Yet I have time and time again deferred the responsibility of pronouncing and exposing this place in all its style and shame. Perhaps this is because I recognize my ignorance and I fear that my short-sighted judgments cannot do this situation justice—each new encounter unfolds for ... read more

Singing, dancing, music, junk food, face paints and drink and the after school computer class became Athis’s 12th bday party!!! Athi's an absolute delight and he so enjoyed the party. He carried the birthday card we made for him round all the time. After singing happy birthday he stood up and did a little speech in which he thanked us for organising it and thanked everyone for coming as if we had arranged a huge event and people had travelled for miles to come. We have found a cab driver that is willing to drive into Kayamandi after dark and have decided to make the most of it. More jenga bombs and shisha…I'd love to enrol as a student at Stellenbosch Uni. All the unis here are Afrikaans or English which is such ashame for the ... read more

Return to Kayamandi after another awesome weekend, this time spent in Backpackers Hostel only half an hour away from Host family house, but what a difference! Moyo Restaurant on Friday night was magical, unlike anywhere I've been before. It's simply a restaurant based outside among the trees in the Spier Winelands, lit only by lanterns and fires, absolutely beautiful. There are even tables up in the trees themselves. Everyone wears traditional African dress and they come round and sing at the tables, there are bands playing, others come and paint your face. The buffet is immense...every meat from kudu, ostrich, crocodile...and five different types of fish. Each has a different sauce or relish to go with it, and there's hot and cold salads, potatoes etc. Cakes, ice-creams, sauces for buffet desert. Definitely my kind of place! ... read more

The fashion show at Zoleka’s crèche was brilliant! Apparently the children have been practicing for weeks, working on their walk and wiggle, they made so much effort with the costumes too. I ended up being one of the judges as they were let down at the last minute. Really not an easy job. Lulutho was very upset with me that he was not chosen for a prize…bless him, I’d have chosen him if there weren’t three other judges, but I had difficulty explaining this to him. We have a new addition to the family this week…baby Natasha. Lukhono, my eldest host brother, has a two year old daughter who lives elsewhere with her mother. They both came to visit at the weekend, there was a bit of commotion and the mum left Sunday morning leaving Natasha ... read more

Slightly different weekend so far to the Cape Town trips I've become used to! Am staying in Kayamandi this weekend. Last night was spent in one of the township bars...its a buzzing atmosphere. It's predominantly male, and pretty overwhelming when you walk in, but again host bro and friends look after us like royalty...if anyone tries their luck that they don't approve of, they get rid of them very sharpish. Very bizarre African dancing which made me giggle. Some wonderful conversations, the older kids who are studying are so passionate about politics, other countries etc, they all talk about wanting to travel and visit other countries, but taking a holiday is almost unheard of. It was difficult trying to come up with an idea for some creative writing in the week as the children's experiences are ... read more

Once again another lovely weekend back in the world of Cape Town and the West Coast. Before we left on Friday afternoon, we helped Zoleka with a fundraising campaign that one of the previous volunteers from Germany is running from home. She asked us to email her details of Zoleka and the creche she runs in Kayamandi with a few photos. Was such a lovely visit and only a stones throw away from my house so I'll definitely be going again. What a comparison with the trendy kids on the coast at Clifton Beach on Saturday! It was harder to say goodbye to the family this weekend as have become so fond of them, especially the little ones, but so lovely to catch up with everyone in Cape Town. The drumming sesh on Friday was a ... read more

Mdeba is my host uncle! He's also a very witty tour guide and invited us to tag along at the back when he was doing a tour of Kayamandi yesterday...it was supposed to start at 10.30 and had told the school we were to be a bit late coming in, but taking into consideration 'African time' it didn't kick off until nearly 11.30. But it was worth it. Learned lots about the place we're staying, and saw a few more darker, and also some lighter, sides to where I'm living. Also gave us an opportunity to take some pics of the township as ordinarily I don't wander around with my camera. Stellenbosch was originally whites only and Kayamandi housed only black men who came into the city to work without their wives and children (Mdebe was ... read more

Travelling about is interesting here. Stellenbosch is about a 40mins walk from the Kayamandi so when you have shopping or laundry etc or if its any time after about 5 when strolling about is not recommended, you have to take a 'mini-bus taxi'. There are hundreds of these mini bus taxis that wait at the parking lots, but thousands of people that need to cram onto them. They are great fun. There are times when I would recommend that Posh Spice should await the next one as she couldn't possible fit, but an African Mama with her wonderful, sizeable behind will shuffle on with sheer determination. One journey in particular made me giggle when a big African mama was 'woo-hoo'ing' as she tried to squeeze herself into the spare inches between my left leg and the ... read more
