Another early start for our journey to Kruger. We got a bit apprehensive after passing signs stating: “beware high risk car hi jacking area” and “beware of the hippo’s” !!!!!!!!! To name but a few. The journey took us through a market on the outskirt of a Township - it was quite a sight. I wasn’t worried Dan honest. When we finally reached Paul Kruger Gate we heaved a sigh of relief. Although the journey through the High and Lowveld’s was spectacular, with regards to feeling comfortable, it was probably the worse. Our cottage, classed as luxury, is quite basic but big. It is right on the Sabi riverside and the outlook is superb. There are baboons and little monkeys all over the place. They are a nuisance. Our kitchen is outside the cottage. A sign ... read more

Day 15 At the bottom of the Kalahari Dessert here where the mighty Orange River flows through and creates the Augrabies waterfall. Whilst it ain’t Niagara or Iguaçu, it has a certain majesty being in the middle of an arid and dramatic setting. And its almost deserted.. I also finally saw a springbok and the little dassie - apparently a cousin of an elephant!!!!! Then it was to what was advertised as white water rafting …..but as its the dry season, the Thames flows faster - but having said that it was very pleasant spending the warm afternoon paddling down the river. ... read more

After 4 hours sleep, time to pack and move on. We have a lot of road to cover for the next game. I force Hawkins to drive this stretch, his first drive further than the shops... We use the sat nav the whole way so it's a piece of cake, until I suggest we visit the Big Hole for some culture for the day, he fails that part so we need the sat nav again, not sure how he went so wrong the sign posts were pretty simple. The Big Hole is exactly that, a large man dug hole from the diamond mining era. The museum has recently been renovated so is a great experience. Outside it has been modelled on an old diamond mining village, 20s style shops and vehicles. Inside there is a 20min ... read more

IT was a 118 km drive to cross the border into South Africa again. Just be aware that crossing this way takes longer than coming into Namibia but there is no charge. We had decided to stay in Clanwilliam for the night at the Clanwilliam Lodge, which looks amazing on the Internet. We hadn't booked it, so when we arrived, we asked for a room. I'm quite sure they overcharged us as the internet said it was only £60 per night but we paid about £80. The lodge is very dated now unfortunately although we can see that it once was a fabulous place to stay and if someone would 'do it up' it could once more be a gorgeous hotel. Our room was quite poky but the shower was great - best shower I have ... read more

Now this was REAL camping, not for sissies! We had to take all the water we would need for 5 days, that would be for drinking, cooking and cleaning.... We also made loo time easier by taking with a 'toilet'... but Zeedah wasn't convinced.. perhaps next time?? On this trip we were joined by Grant and Vouna, Zeedah, Nick and Wanda. This is Grant and Vouna's first camping trip with us and even rented a 4x4 to try out the fun...more about that later... Our first night we stopped over at pet friendly Beaverlac in the Cedarberg region, about 25km from Porterville. They do not book campsites, so first come first serve, and thankfully there weren't a lot of people there so we parked off under a few trees... After unpacking and setting up our tents we ... read more

I have little in the way of Upington accommodation info, and of course Tourist Information's not open when the Intercape disgorges me at 6:45AM, so I head to the one place I have an address for. The guy who lets me in looks surprised to see me, partly due to the hour and partly due to the room tariff being several times higher than my appearance would suggest I can afford. It's more than I want to pay but I'm tired and frankly just want a shower and a nap. Fortunately the room's the best-equipped one I've had in Africa, the kettle and fridge promising a pot noodles and white wine session in the near future. Upington lies on the Orange River which, 100km west of here, forms the border betweeen southern Namibia and South Africa. ... read more

The 800k detour! (having trouble loading photos as internet connection is too slow - will try again later) Again a local gave us good advice but this time it was ‘go west now to see the spring wildflowers - the rain has come early.’ We debated this over 2 rest days, again in a nice cabin at Upington doing the washing, and decided to head into the setting sun. The 400km journey west to Springbox had a South American feel (not that we’ve been to S Am!!) with huge sweeping semi-arid plains between various oddly shaped piles of rock - well mountains actually of all sorts of shapes (I could just imagine a gaucho galloping across). (Strangely) my navigating skills were tested that afternoon as we had difficulty finding the Namaqualand National Park - a whole ... read more

Rain and lions in the Kalahari It rained in the desert! We had to crack open our raincoats for the first time in SA as we set up second camp - then there was a spectacular thunderstorm (which they said was unusual) that evening and rain over night. Couldn’t believe it - rain in the desert! It actually wasn’t much but was wet enough to need a coat for a bit. And now it is spot the lion - that’s what it is all about - we have now joined the ‘great 4x4 lion-hunters’ brigade. One peers at the sightings board at each camp, chats to neighbouring campers in and out of the ablutions and kitchen blocks and pulls up beside any other vehicle and say “have you seen any?” You also get lined up at ... read more
