Vlooisdriff to Trawal, South Africa This was an easy travel day, around 300 km on paved road, making our way down from the high desert plateau into wine country. We arrived at Highlander's and pitched our tents on a grassy terrace overlooking hills of grapes, all hung with fruit just formed. Whip Man and his truck White Nile was already there. We knew he would be, since we were scheduled to have a wine tasting with his group later that afternoon. They are now a small group, and we noticed some tension between two people, who were fighting, which is not an uncommon sight for an overland group, we are told.   This is spring in South Africa. We went for a walk down the road for a few kilometers, just enjoying the scenery, with grapes ... read more

Fish River to Vlooisdriff, South Africa Today was on bumpy dusty gravel all the way to the South Africa border. The desert is spotted with small mountains of boulder piles and fenced, but no domestic animals in sight. Occasionally we saw mountain zebra, ostrich and springbok, but they were widely scattered for the most part. The mountain zebra are unique to this part of the desert and are smaller with stripes down their legs. At the border we exited Namibia and entered South Africa with no visa payments and no forms to fill in for a change. Our campsite was along the Orange river with real water flowing. Every river in Namibia was bone dry with the exception of Fish River, which was a series of small pools along the canyon bottom. There was no doubt ... read more

I will be blogging through both sites for the next 3 entries or so. The easiest way to follow me is go to myjourney-debby.blogspot.com It was time to leave our new friends behind as well as the colourful stories of Oom Willem and Oom Jan. We left the coast without seeing any limbs floating in the waves as the oomies reckon that the sharks don’t like the taste of black people and spit out their arms and legs. (except, they stated, the one ... read more

One of highlights about travelling is the interesting people you meet along the way. Graatjie and Gerhard, alarmed by the increasing crime rate at Hartebeesport, sold up to travel like us, but 2 weeks later, fell in love with the coast between Pappendorp and Strandfontein so they just stayed. They invited us to park our truck next to their seaside wooden house which they were revamping and kuier with them for a bit. We couldn’t resist their friendly hospitality or the remote setting of their warm dwelling overlooking a disused marine diamond mine so we plakked with them for a week. We have made friends for life. Their neighbours, two brothers deep in their 70’s are salt of the earth people and I was fascinated by their stories as they bggeyed about days gone by. They ... read more

We spent the next couple of days on the move and doing a few touristy things. Theo got chatting to Tromp, a worker at the Waterfalls, who was prepared to show him how to plait and make a whip (a dying tradition) so we jumped on the bike to Niewoutville to look for a guy called Dupie at the Hotel who could apparently sell Theo some rawhide strips needed to make the whip. Unfortunately he wasn’t around so we explored the town and visited the nature conservation office where a friendly guy gave us the low down of everything to see in the whole Namakwaland area. This area is definitely not just for ou toppies with a hat doing scenic drives to look at the blommetjies. There are loads of mountains and valleys for the extreme ... read more

A barn owl sat on the roof of the truck screeching softly right through the night and no it wasn’t a bad omen he was just having take out dinner on the fly. It was quite something knowing he was right above us especially when the truck rocked ever so slightly from his weight every time he took off or landed on the roof above the vent where he sat catching flying insects and massive grasshoppers which were attracted to our light. He probably ate rodents for dessert which we had inadvertently attracted for him by putting those disgusting bones out from those horrible heads. That was the setting for our next stop which was at the stunning waterfalls a few kilometres outside the town of Niewoudville. We stayed a few days, parked on the old ... read more

Well what a festival to remember. Proper boere style good old fashion vetpret. We spent the day at the fees from early morning Saturday right through to that time of night when you know you’ve had enough but you keep going until you’re so thankful that you don’t have to crawl much further than the parking lot to your truck to crash out. There were a few other campers scattered around but the other hundreds of people must have booked into the dozen or so guest houses or the Hotel or crawled into a hole somewhere. There were loads of stalletjies selling stuff from kweper jelly to spotted Nguni cowhides. They had animals on display from stud Merino sheep which nearly measured to under my armpits (I bet those peertjies weren’t for sale), miniature donkeys, beautiful ... read more

Giant steps are what we take, but we still move very slowly. We’ve finally left Cape Town, headed for the Warm Bokkekveld (pronounced wwggarrrm bokkggeveiltdt) and 4 days later it really is like being on the moon out here. We’ve taken the R355, a 250 km dirt road from Ceres to Calvinia. It was chilly the first leg of our scenic route as we left the snow covered Matroosberg mountains behind us but the view of miles and miles of fynbos and plenty of birdlife kept us occupied as we flipped through our bird book, marking off sightings just like real twitters. Then we went through Die Poort, the doorway to the Karoo and life on the Warm Bokkeveld got sparser and warmer. Then on the morning of Theo’s 50th birthday (we spent 4 days doing ... read more

As Africa is so large, some days on the truck are simply travelling days. Luckily we can amuse ourselves, the seats are comfy for napping and reading and there are 2 tables of 4 at the back for chatting or cards. The game of the trip is cribbage, which we play without the board but score correctly anyway using paper and pen. Better than the day we played poker without chips so just bet willy nilly, trillions of dollars went down. Worst was Jon losing to Megan when he bet a real item, cooking duty! Also for the start of the trip the roads are smooth and surfaced so the ride is comfortable. Later into Namibia the bare gravel roads are bumpy and make playing cards even more of a challenge... After a day on the ... read more
