We took off at 8:30am this morning in an 8-seater Quest Kodiak, a new plane manufactured in Idaho. We had a 30 minute flight to Hoedspruit Airport where we are awaiting our next flight to Joburg (Johannesburg). Its a very small rural airport and the waiting room is filling up as our flight time nears. Kevin is air dropping photos to me for this blog and twice now, he’s airdropped to someone else in the waiting room, not me. They don’t seem to mind. We are boarding soon. Until our next stop.... read more

Geo: -24.349, 30.9542After a great morning, we went back to the camp and decided we would sign up for a sunset drive. The cost was about 255 rand or $17 a person. Starts at 4pm and runs until 7pm. Our driver/guide checks us all in and takes us to the vehicle. It is one of those big vehicles but the nice thing is there are two seats, aisle, two seats all the way to the back of the vehicle. We did not know it when we started the drive, but they have two spotlights, one use by driver on the right hand side and one by one of the customers on the left. Right as we were leaving, a man came up to the driver and told him about a kill "a short distance up the ... read more

Geo: -24.349, 30.9543Head back the direction we were heading and there are two more lions lying in the grass. They did not seem to be doing much so we continued on our journey. We had decided to head down Old Main(S90) to Gudzani Rd. Turned onto Gudzani road and came upon a group of cars stopped. Gentleman tells us there is a leopard in a tree, "just look through my dad's car window." This was not a real close leopard and there was some vegetation that made it difficult to get pictures. Some of the cars drove on and we were able to get into position to take some pictures. Tried from several different places to get the best possible shot.Watch the leopard for awhile and some people drive up and we exchange information; we tell ... read more

Geo: -24.349, 30.9542Up and did a leisurely pack up before heading out. We did not have far to travel and we knew we probably would not be able check in when we first got there. Drove down to the river to see what we could see there. Not much happening and took the river road. There was a very large female elephant with her baby who seemed a little upset with us as we drove past.Drove to the waterhole and there was no lion and so we decided to drive the secret road we have discovered and as we drove the loop could see dust rising. Got to the overlook and there were hundreds of buffalo either in the water or heading to the water. The dust they were making made the whole scenario seem very ... read more

Day 2 of the 4 day trip started bright and early at the gates of the park. The lodge we stay at is outside of the park about 45 minutes away. Our vehicle now is an open air 4x4 type of jeep thing. It can hold probably 10 people and it looks so classic I really feel like Im on safari now!!! Before the sun cracked the horizon BAM! An elephant 50 feet away! Another 300 feet down the road and BAM! A giraffe posing for a photo op. Woa! There are animals everywhere just waiting to be seen! By 8:30 we had 4 of the Big 5 on camera. What the what?!?!?! Maybe I don’t even need to go on other safaris…we’ve seen everything!!! Everything except the lion that is…and actually the real reason I ... read more

Habe wunderschoene sightings gehabt, unter... read more

Geo: -24.349, 30.9542We were leaving for Skukuza and decided to drive the Timbavati Road once more and see what we could see. Besides, it is a very scenic road to travel and would be fun no matter what we saw. The road follows the Timbavati River a great deal of the time and so there are chances of seeing something down getting a drink of water. Yesterday when we had driven this road we saw lots of interesting birds and other game.We were driving along and saw cars stopped on the side of the road. One was turned sideways and the gentleman in it had one of those giant cameras. All we could see were some vultures on the ground feeding on something. We looked around and then saw people in a car pull up and ... read more

Geo: -24.349, 30.9542What a day looks like while we are here in Kruger Park. As of October 1, the gate will open at 5:30a.m. instead of 6 but will still close at 6:00p.m. We try to be in the first ten cars to leave out the gate so we can hopefully be the first at a special viewing. We will do an early morning drive and then either come back in and fix breakfast and do an exercise walk, or continue with our drive if things are really cooking. Our exercise walks unfortunately have been more erratic this trip because Laura has had a bad ankle but things are bound to be looking up.Most days we do come back to the camp if not for breakfast, at least by lunchtime for lunch and then a rest before ... read more

Geo: -24.349, 30.9542Up in the morning and time for another game drive. We say our goodbyes to Jerry and Tom who are heading back to Johannesburg on Friday and fly to Capetown for a week. We decide to drive the Timbavati Road because some people Robert had talked to had seen a leopard in a tree on this road. It follows the Timbavati River for a great deal of the road.We set off and stop at a view point that is high above the river and you can look down and see in both directions. It is a very lovely view and we saw elephants down in the river having a drink. Looked to see if we could see any other game. Other than the francolins in the parking lot, it was quiet so we moved ... read more

Geo: -24.349, 30.9542We decided to try out a new camp this year and go to the Maroela camp. This is a satellite camp located near the Orpen gate. It is supposed to have wild dogs and cheetah in the area and so off we went. On the way we drove the S-100 and it was pretty calm. The ride was going smoothly when we came to a detour. During the floods earlier this year, the bridge over the Timbavati river about 10 kilometres from Maroela was washed away. We had to take a detour that took us on a dirt road that was being graded the first time we drove on it and the piled up sand did not make driving that easy.Got to the camp and decided to camp under this very large tree right up ... read more
