hey all. im so sorry that i havnt had time to message you birthday shout outs or valentines day wishes or whatever other major event i may have missed in the last like 3ish weeks. im busying backpacking all the way down the coast from durban to cape town, its about 2000km i think. and im just loving it, right now im in the Wild Coast staying in a small Xhosa village on the coast, it absolutely beautiful. i cant be online for too long cause i am slightly broke and internet is expensive, i just wanted to give a quick hi, bye, i love you guys and i miss you all! its been hard for me to find time to get ahold of ppl. so im sorry. but at the same time im enjoying my ... read more

Today we ride from Alicedale to Umtata (Mthatha). I rode today with Otto as we tried to find a route to down to the coast. Most of the roads were not paved so we opted to Port Alfred. We have coffee in Bathurst and join up with Peter, Bob, Patrick & Phebe. It starts to rain as we ride to East London. I get separated from everyone as we near East London during a miss cue on my part when Bob pulled over briefly. I’m on my own again until I come across Peri and Ian near Butterworth. I ride on looking for a place to eat lunch and expect Peri and Ian to catch up shortly. As I ride thru Butterworth, for the first time I’m concerned that I’m riding on my own. ....to let you all know i am still alive and in South Africa! Just thought i would write a blog to let you all kno what i had been up to seeing as im so far behind with these blogs. Bit slack of me. Anyway, i will put text to the blogs with just pictures but its quicker to do just photos at the mo. We left Oz on the 21st Jan and have been in S. Africa ever since...and love it. Great place, relaxed, happy and chilled. We also went to Swaziland for six days and stayed in the best pace we have come across, the views were awesome. Done the Kruger park which was a bit disapointing, saw a leopard cub which was lucky but no lion, i really want to see a lion! ... read more

Today we were in Umtata, which had been the old capital of the Transkei, another Black homeland created during the apartheid period. This was also a community that was quite disadvantaged, near the childhood home of Nelson Mandela. In this ciy, there is a Nelson Mandela Road, a Nelson Mandela Drive, and a Nelson Mandela Street, all different - be careful when asking directions! There were piles of trash on many corners of the town, and the whole place appeared dirty and rundown. Umtata is the old spelling, and Mthatha is the new, corrected spelling. The place has a reputation for crime; the people at our hotel (the Windsor) were surprised to see whites there.
