Editor's note: I decided not to write this entry since it's not my first time experiencing the often overwhelming welcome to the continent. I have apparently forgotten that things that happen here are not normal. It all seems so familiar and ordinary to me (yes, I'm aware that this means that there is probably something very wrong with me). Instead, I offer up my mom's account of our first few days of Africa. If you want to read about my first week in Africa and see how far I've come since then, you can read it here. After finally arriving at the Dakar Airport, we had to maneuver our way though the throngs of other travels. We waited in an endless line to get our passports checked when a parade of mothers and babies cut in ... read more

I just returned from my trip to Africa where I went to Dakar, Senegal. The first thing I saw when we toured the city was the newly constructed African Renaissance Monument. Wow! It was beyond beautiful! The 160- foot bronze statue that has already been compared to the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty by the Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade will be a signature tourist site for Africa and a symbol for the African Diaspora around the world. The towering statue situated on a 330-foot hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is a $27 million project that will contain cultural exhibitions, multimedia and conference rooms, shops and a nearby theatre. A floor at the very top will allow visitors a bird’s eye view of the surrounding city. The brainchild of President Wade, who first wrote ... read more

Wow! I can’t believe the hospitality. I just had a bunch of bread and Nutella given to me by some Senegalese deckhands. I’m pretty sure it was their supper! So I got my Level 1 diving certification card today. My instructor Mamadou took me on two hour long dives, which placated my ire. Le Doyen is a lazy fuck. His sore leg seemed to have completely healed today, as soon as some girls wanted to go diving that is. Oh well, all’s well that… I sort of have a bed on board, which is good because I’m exhausted! ... read more

Wow! Unbelievable hospitality! What can I say about Senegalese hospitality?! I had my second meal at Salif’s home in two days. Salif’s pops called me “mon fils”. I still can’t get over all of it! I also went to another soccer game with Salif’s friend Malik. At least there were some goals (2-0) this time. Earlier Malik had invited me to practice with his soccer team, which I had figured was of a ‘beer league’ caliber. It turns out that it’s a very good thing I turned him down, as I later found out that this team plays in Senegal’s Division 3 (semi-pro) League and furthermore Malik also plays on another team that last year drew the Senegalese national team. Salif also hooked me up with a connection in the Casamanche, where I’m off to tomorrow. ... read more

An uneventful day as it was apparently too rough to dive. I went to Ile Goree today, very quaint. Met a Belgian girl who works for the Red Cross. She has three masters, so it sounds like I’m on the right path. She sort of ditched me for supper though, so to hell with her. Also I recently has the difficult experience of trying to explain what laser eye surgery is to my African friends! Their only response: On na pas ca ici… ... read more

Well scuba diving went well, despite starting off by putting my wetsuit on backwards. The rest went OK, although for the first thirty seconds or so I thought “there’s no way I can do this”, which surprised me. But I got over it quickly and eager to become competent. I think the initial thing is getting over the idea of breathing while underwater, which just seems wrong. After diving, I went to see Kyromi and Eri for the last time (maybe) at the house they’re staying at (Salif’s). After getting caught in a post wrestling match celebration I went to Salif’s and had a chicken and couscous family meal. Afterward we went to visit a wedding party so we could show the groom pictures of his own wedding (which he missed --- WTF?). Everyone is very, ... read more

I finally left that rat-infested whore house “Le Provancal” and am at “Oceanium” where I’m about to start what very well may become a life-long love of scuba diving, or today might be a once only. Yesterday evening was grand! Finally got an email back from Kiryomi, telling me that they were going to see Youssou N’Dor. Thinking that I’d go a bit early to ensure that I didn’t miss them I showed up at 11:15 pm. Of course they didn’t arrive until 1:15 am (with two dudes --- Salif and Baidou). The show didn’t start until 2 am. At first I thought I was in the wrong place because it was a Gendarmarie base, but no. Anyway the guys turned out to be cool and the show was pretty rockin’! Senegalese girls! Wow! Best butts ... read more

Well I made it to Dakar, although I’m pretty sure I’m staying in a brothel! Not dumb (desperate?) enough to sample the merchandise. It turns out that Eri and Kiryomi are in Dakar until Monday so I really hope I can meet up with them tonight, if only to have someone to hang out with. I’ve decided that the camera is kaput and have bought a better one in the market. It seems to work well and it seemed to be a good price at 70,000 CFA (started at 175,000 CFA). Hopefully it continues to work well. On the way back through the market I felt a large ‘whop’ on my right calf. I turned around to see a red-headed dude (dye of course) with his fists clenched and a crazed look in his eye. Although ... read more

Due to the lack of appropriate medical facilities in Guinea, I've been whisked away to Senegal for my mid-service check up. Despite all the fun forms and doctor visits, I'm choosing to see this as a second vacation. First things first, the moment I got off the plane, I was greeted by sliding glass doors. I'm travelling with another volunteer from Guinea and we took this as a sign that Dakar would be a little different than what we were use to in Conakry. The customs officials immediately inferred that we were Peace Corps volunteers and started speaking to us in Wolof (the predominantly spoken local language in Senegal). We apologized in French, saying we didn't understand. But apparently Peace Corps is very well known here, and has a great reputation because this didn't really bother ... read more

so this entry dates to April 8, 2009. again, almost straight out of my journal. so on wednesday April 8, i woke up at 8:30 and took a shower, which basically consisted of washing my feet since my hair was in braids and i didn't want to get it wet. the wife of the guy we were staying with brought us breakfast which consisted of bread and butter with some weird coffee/tea concoction that was pretty tasty. by 9:30 we had left. first we went to the bank where i tried to exchange travelers' cheques, but of course they didn't. so they directed us to some sort of plaza. we found a taxi for CFA5000 and left. we were in the cab for probably an hour and a half dodging cars, trucks, vans, horses, and people ... read more
