Its not the sun that wakes me, - my room being west facing, but an army of men running (very slowly I might add) past my window at half five shouting encouragement to themselves as they go. This tends to be weekends and I’m told the school choir practice early on weekends too so that should be a nice change! During the week it tends to be Cykabare the houseboy who is busy doing something. But in all honestly I love being up early because it means I can go to sleep early!! I tend to get up at six or quarter past and do some skipping or pilates before it gets too hot. I only dare do the skipping outside as this brings an audience as it is. Getting warmed up tends to help with ... read more

My home for the next 5 weeks is a reasonable sized village i'd say. There is a tarmac road running along the north end of town with the garages, bus station and hospital and then a 2km tarmaced loop around the 'village'. All the remaining roads are mud/dust tracks stretching for miles covered by coffee/banana/seetcorn plantations - each plot is not very large and could certainly not be used to serve any purpose other than selling at the local market. There are mud/concrete houses scattered all around, people taking enormous pride in their home, sweeping and cleaning everyday. The tarmaced route through the centre of town is lined with tailoring shops, bikonjes (small rooms to have a drink and snack), general shops (consisting of a 3x4m room and the back wall covered with anything and everything), ... read more

I am working for an association set up in 1998 which provides support for education for less fortunate children. It was set up by a group of guys who grew up as orphans in Uganda and who decided that they had to come back home after everything that happened in 1994. The organisation has grown and now has day and boarding students who can learn construction, tailoring or mechanics. All students will have completed primary school at the very least and many secondary school as well. Interestingly there doesn't seem to be any thought as to what skills Rwanda needs because it seems to me that there are thousands or tailors already. That is not specific to this organisation though. Alongside the college for older students there is also a pre-school. The term only starts at ... read more

On Friday afternoon, we packed up our camping gear and headed east of Kigali. Just before the Tanzanian border, we turned off on a dirt road and ventured into Akagera National Park. We stopped at the ranger station on the way into the park to pay our $10 camping fee. At the station, they have a three-tiered, descending, price scale: tourist price, resident visa (ex-pats, NGOs, diplomats), and local. We saw our first wildlife before even getting to the campsite: a deer-like animal called a water buck. The campsite was on a grassy ridge wth scattered trees overlooking a lake and the edge of Tanzania. There was a covered pavillion, a few scattered firepits, and an outhouse. After pitching the tents and setting up camp, the men quickly sauntered off on a walking safari while the ... read more

On Sunday, we went with friends to the Embassy's property on Lake Muhazi. It was one of our first experiences being outside the city in inclement weather. The lake is about an hour drive from Kigali, and it started raining when we were about half way there. Each of the three families brought part of a barbeque meal. As we ate lunch, it continued to rain on and off. A couple of the guys ventured out into the lake in an inflatable canoe. Swimming in the lake is not advisable due to parasites that live on the lake bottom. It was a good place to go and relax by throwing around the football and chatting with friends. On our way home, one of the vehicles (a heavy suburban) became stuck on the road. After rain during ... read more

I am back from an amazing two day trip to Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda! Brief history of the park: The park was created in 1934 by the Belgians as a nature reserve and was originally 2,500 square kilometers in size. The park borders Tanzania to the east with the Akagera River the natural boundary. During the 1994 civil war in Rwanda, many people fled to Tanzania and as they started to return, they were resettled on park land so that only 1,085 km2 now remain in the park. Akagera is similar in landscape to the famous savannahs of Kenya and Tanzania and there is plenty of wildlife to be seen. Six giraffes and 26 elephants were brought in and have done well - there are now 80 giraffes and over 100 elephants! My tour ... read more

Dzis mielismy wyjechac o 5 rano. Pobudka o 4.30. 5.20 zaczynam sie denerwowac, slonce wschodzi, zwierzeta juz pewnie najedzone. Wchodze do kuchni, a tam w najlepsze smaza dla nas omlety i wlasnie zaczynaja piec tosty. Afryka.

Ceci etant dit, l'expression in the middle of nowhere y prend tout sons sens.
