Welcome to Raleigh Namibia’s blog. We’ll be posting regular updates to keep you up to speed on expedition life out here in South West Africa. We’d like to make this blog as interactive as possible so please post your comments/thoughts here - we’d love to read them. When our three project phases kick off on 1 April you’ll be able to keep tabs on their progress. You can read how our staff and participants’ hard work is building schools for eager young learners, creating playgrounds for communities, and lending a helping hand to Namibia’s wildlife, flora and fauna. In the meantime, we wanted to introduce Raleigh’s behind-the scenes operations here at Field Base, 20km outside the capital, Windhoek. We’ve posted a shot of the team and our home here to give you an idea of where ... read more

I’m still pinching myself to check that I’m actually here. Here in Windhoek. Here in the friendly internet café on Fidel Castro Street where the PC has crashed on me twice already this afternoon, my flashdrive appears to have gotten bent in my travels and I’ve discovered that I’ve brought the wrong cable to download pictures from my camera . Here, a couple of blocks away from where I’ve parked the Old Duchess, leaving her in the tender care of yet another diligent attendant - no impersonal parking meters and draconian traffic wardens for us in Namibia; the Old Duchess who is gently reminding me of her little quirks (Keith, if you’re reading this, she’s STILL IN ONE PIECE, honest!), and who could hardly be more different than the little “toy car” I’ve been driving in ... read more

Also eine echte Geduldsprobe!

Well, today is my last day in Windhoek and we are officially done with training! Yay! It was very helpful but very exhausting! Yesterday was a good day...we had a speaker in the morning on "teaching with rubbish" which was cool because I now know how to play checkers and bingo with cardboards and bottle caps! Then we broke up in groups and my group went to an HIV/AIDS clinic and got to see the process of a drop-in client. Very interesting! Tomorrow we are all going our separate ways throughout Namibia and this is where the real challenge begins... I met with our field director today and she gave me more info. about my school and principal. She said the prinicipal is very energetic and very excited to have a World Teach volunteer teacher at ... read more

Hey everyone! Well, I tried to send pictures today and I was so excited for all of you to see what I have been doing over the past 2 weeks but unfortunately the internet cafe with a USB port would not open this site so I couldn't do it...so I was unsuccessful...so i just spent a lot of time running back and forth between 2 internet cafe's because I thought it was just the connection...phew! Anyway, I'll just get started...the past week and a half has been really good! We were in Windhoek, the capital, for training until last Tuesday. My luggage came in last Sunday, and I was pleasantly surprised that nothing had been stolen considering Johannesburg is the World's Capital for luggage theft! It was funny, only the locks on the bags were taken ... read more

Well, we made it! After a 15 hour and 10 minute flight to Johannesburg (the pilot told us it is one of the longest non-stop flights in the world) and a short jump to Namibia...we are here. The kicker is that none of our luggage made it so we are all still wearing the same clothes from when we left. They keep telling us that hopefully tomorrow. (I am very thankful to my mom for telling me to bring this extra pair of running pants, t-shirts and underwear!) Anyway, the other volunteers are really nice, and it is very hot here! We started our training today and teaching sounds very exhausting but very rewarding. We are going to be going to a host family next week to do some on-hands experience in a school so that ... read more

Version Francaise un peu plus bas Hi there, Hope this blog entry finds everyone doing great. Well, here we are, a week away from Xmas and I am still in Africa. The adventure continues and Africa has definitely gotten me hooked and wanting more. Just flew in last night from Namibia, I am back in Johannesburg at my favorite hotel for a couple days of rest and prep before flying to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) tomorrow afternoon. My brother Laurent will be back in LA by Wednesday and I know he too will miss the amazing sights and sense of freedom he discovered in Namibia. I miss him already, we laughed and goofed a lot as you can see on the pictiures! (make sure you scroll down to see all the pics - there are about 40+ ... read more

"Gorie more" (good morning) All. I arrived after 39.5 hrs, but it took my bags an extra 20hrs. By than I had been already been " adopted" by Hester, an Afrikaan (western african) and her family and friends. I met her at the in Johnasburg airport, and next morning I'm being picked up for shopping city tour and lunch at her home. I am not joking: she does talk more than I do, and I feel right at home. People here are very friendly. Lunch started with a entire raw, skinned lamb presented for chopping by this electric machine. Namibians are huge meat eaters, to my surprise, and like to hunt too. I let than know, gently, that I hardly eat any type of meat/flash at all. "How come????" was the question, over and over again. ... read more

Hello there. Yes, I have been fortuned enough to be hopping to several continents this year, even to my own surprise. (Remember that I had plane phobia until fairly recently). What and I doing on the southern tip of Africa? Well, it all started back in March, with the unpretensious submission of two abstracts with the data from my own clinic on diabetes education/control, for presentation at the annual International Diabetes Federation meeting. Unexpectadely they were both accepted and, of course, I couldn't let the opportunity go by. You know... since I got the "travelling bug" and this was a "business" trip, I just HAD TO venture to yet another curious place. The meeting will be held in Cape Town, South Africa. So, what and I doing in Namibia? Well... The more I read about South ... read more
