As I had my trip to the Sossuvlei arranged, I had enough time to take a bus out to Swakopmund for a few days. This was pretty straightforward and the journey took about 4 hours, although the Atlantic Ocean was visible from about 40km away as we approached the end of the Namib deseret. There I found my hostel Desert Sky, easily enough. It had been freezing cold at night time in Windhoek, so I had elected to stay in a dorm once again, even though the temperatures were a lot higher in Swakopmund, in the end. Swakopmund is a small town right on the Atlantic Coast. Like Windhoek, there is a very German feel to the town. It is almost like how the Bavarians would do coastal town if they had a coast. This surreal ... read more

The Swakopmund Hotel is a grand old lady, formerly the train station, and we were delighted to be there for two nights, which gave us all an opportunity to regroup, do some laundry and see a little bit of the town. Up early in the morning (as usual) for a drive up the Skeleton Coast to Cape Cross to photograph the seal colony. Richard decided to spend his morning at the Crystal Museum, a place he visited 18 months ago when we were in Swakopmund. The East winds were blowing furiously and not only were they hot, but they created a terrific sandstorm. We could hardly see, and when we arrived at Cape Cross, we really didn't want to get out of the vehicle because of the sand blasting everything. However, brave it we did, with ... read more

Ever since we flew through in the searing heat of midday back in October 2010, it has been Kayla's dream to return to photograph the famous dunes of the Namib-Nakluft National Park, and she was not disappointed. After a cross country drive from Keetmanshoop that took most of the day, Antonio stepped on the gas and persuaded the park guards that we should be admitted to the park for a late afternoon photo shoot of the dunes. When there was no more light left and our ISO was pushed as high as it could go, we checked into the Sossus Dune Lodge, which is just inside the park. This was a strategic move - we wouldn't have to wait until the gates opened at 6 am for our sunrise shoot the next day. Sure enough, we ... read more

Well hellooooo Swakopmund!!! Swakopmund is a german town on the west coast of Namibia. It is set between the vast Namib Desert and the Atlantic Ocean which provides a play ground for every kind of person. We were immediately thrown into this playground upon arrival as we went to book our activities for the next couple of days. The choices were plentiful, varying from dolphin watching, fishing and township tours to sandboarding, quad biking and sky diving. Megan and I chose dolphins, quad biking and township tour while the other girls were braver and chose sand boarding. Sadly though as I mentioned our dolphin tour did not go ahead, however, this gave us time to explore the little town and have a walk along the beach before we set off on our quad biking tour. After ... read more

Swakopmund on the coast of Namibia is the place to get your adrenalin fix for the country. Here you can find all the activities from sand boarding to skydiving and you will be sure to see some spectacular sights. The highlight for us was no doubt ‘dune 7’ that rises above the desert and makes a nice day trip from Swakopmund. The city itself reminded us of a city you would expect to see in the Middle East where the desert and sand dunes meet the outer suburbs. Swakopmund doesn’t seem like it should be there but it is the fastest growing city and with its German architecture and vibes it is easy to see why it is a hot spot with the locals and tourists alike. The other reason we were in this area was ... read more

We finally reached the Atlantic Ocean on February 21. An entire continent crossed with several means of transportation, but essentially "on the ground" since we had left Dar and the Indian Ocean by train about a month earlier (remember the Tazara?). That evening we saw our first "over the water" sunset from the perfectly west-facing jetty and it seemed a good omen of things to come. That afternoon the entire group had visited the "booking office", a not unusual feature of Southern African tourist centres that have many extreme activities to offer. They showed us a very badly edited video with particularly tacky music highlighting some of the adrenaline pumping possibilities: sky-diving, dune-boarding, and quad-biking over the dunes (a bit like playing chicken with an avalanche on a snowmobile in the Whistler back-country). None of them ... read more

Wow, no internet at the hotels. We are at an internet cafe in Swakopmund today. I'm going to start with the beginning though. 5 days ago we flew from Zambia to Namibia thru the Jburg airport again. We got into Winhoek and the lodge picked us up. We stayed at a lodge near the airport and it was just for the night. I had oryz that night for dinner. it was delicious. the next morning, we were picked up for our first small plane flight to Sosssusvlei (I know the spelling is wrong). This place is in the middle of the Nabia desert. Hot, Yes, I heard it got up to 48 (celius). We stayed in a tent lodge, but it had ac that really couldn't keep up. WE did a late afternoon game drive that ... read more

Mit jedem Kilometer ... read more

M – After a great day climbing the Dunes we headed north to Solitaire. Its pretty remote but once again we got lucky with our camp site. This time it however could have doubled as the local zoo! Not only did they have two nice pools and a beautiful garden but freely roaming the site I saw the following animals: - an 10 month old Orix (think large antelope with black and - white markings and 2-3 foot long straight horns), - a young Springbok, - three MeerKats (I only saw the one, and thankfully Kate saw it too otherwise we could have been stuck at the Farm until she saw it as she thinks they’re soooo cute!), - three dogs and numerous peacocks & ducks. In addition in cages/large pens I saw two parrots, several ... read more

This weekend we took a four hour bus ride on the intercape mainliner to the coastal town of Swakopmund. Namibia used to be a German colony and Swakopmund reflects this heritage. We stayed at a place called Brigadoon B and B that was really nice and served delicious breakfasts with bacon and eggs in the garden. Our first night we had dinner at a place called Kucki's pub. I had a local fish called kingklip which was white and flaky and really delicious. Katie had a lovely surf and turf. We tried another local beer called Hansa which is really nice. Then we headed over to the pier to watch the sunset. Swakop is on the west coast of Namibia which makes it on the other side of the Atlantic from the US. It was spectacular ... read more
