... read more

Here are some more tales of our times roughing it on safari :) The restaurant at the lodge has a large back porch that overlooks a watering home so we spent a lot of time relaxing there and drinking coffee and tea (life is pretty hard) There is a group of about 10-15 hippos who hang out in the watering hole and 2 of them have tiny little babies. Those hippo babies are the cutest thing! Katie was obsessed with them and took about a hundred pictures of them. The hippos sleep standing up with their noses resting on the ground or each other and sometimes the mama hippo would rest her nose on the baby which was also quite adorable. Every night a herd of elephants including a few babies would come to the watering ... read more

This weekend we went to Erindi Game Reserve which was the most amazing experience of our lives!! We saw so many wonderful and beautiful animals that it would be terribly boring if we recounted the whole thing but we will use the next 2 blogs to give you the highlights. Erindi is a 72,000 hectacre privately owned game reserve about 2 hours north of Windhoek. Even on the drive to the park we saw baboons, ostrich, kudu and springbok. As we were driving into the reserve Pam played the soundtrack from Out of Africa which was quite apropos. There is a very fancy lodge on the property and one of their goals is to fatten up all of the humans (they feed you 5-6 times a day). About an hour after lunch every day they have ... read more

Craig and I ate breakfest at the mall before driving 3.5 hours north to the Frans Indongo lodge (in the middle of no where). Drove 17k down a dirt road to the lodge/game farm off of the main highway. LOTS of property where we are. The lodge has 170 square kilos of propert with many different species of animals. Did a 1.5 hour hike from 2pm to 3:30pm to a small mountain, had a nice view of the area from up top. Took a dip in the pool and relaxed for a while. Went on a game drive from 5 to 7pm. Rode in the noisiest possible truck, still saw many animals. The only thing that would have made it noisyer is if the drive honked the horn as he drive. The highlight was seeing 2 ... read more

Found this internet cafe on my way back. Lot to say about the last 3 days. Well worth it. Have been doing a lot more driving than I anticipated, excuse the spelling, trying to type fast. Entered Etosha from the south, just above Outjo, stayed at the western most camp, Okaukuejo, very nice place! Climbed a lookout tower and saw a giraffe moving left to right towards the park road. Hopped in car and intercepted it, was about 150 feet from it, saw zebra, wildebest, orxk, springbok. All park roads are dirt and drivable at 40 mpg, but you want to go slower to see animals. Signed up for the 8pm to 11:30pm guided safari. Driver uses a spot light to point out animals, did not see as much as when I drove, but it was ... read more

Phew... Another very hectic and busy couple of weeks... Two weekends ago was our World Teach End Of Service meeting where all the volunteers got together to debrief the year...it was interesting to hear and compare everyone's feelings on the year/ leaving in a few weeks / plans for the future...I would say most people are pretty excited to leave and actually 4 out of the 18 volunteers from my group have decided to extend another year! I have to say that I definitley contemplated extending for some time...it has been an extraordinary year for me...and I really don't feel ready for it to end...but I think a big part of it being so great for me was that I gave it my all knowing that it was only for a year...I mean, if I ... read more

May 11, Friday More Dunes, Some Atlantic Ocean and Back to Okahandja OK I lost a day somewhere. It was hot outside at 8:30 am this morning. I woke up feeling refreshed, had a cup of Ricoffee and some breakfast that was provided with the room. Then we packed up to head off to the dunes. When we lined up to pay for our rooms we were told that the owner wanted us to pay only half of the already low rate that we were quoted. What a blessing. It is really great to be with Charlene for these types of adventures since she is quite spontaneous and the kids are flexible. We detoured toward the lagoon t see the flamingos. Dakotah developed another killer coldsore as we arrived in Namibia. The Dakotah and the ... read more

May 6 Journey to Namibia I had a couple of hours sleep then woke up thinking about the logistics of the journey tomorrow. For about $40 savings for me I was causing Lovemore so much inconvenience and trouble. Then there was the uncertainty of the bus tickets because we never received the confirmation of the change. I kept thinking that I wished she handt changed the tickets. At 4am I picked up my book to read. I thought that the best thing to do would be to call the bus company in the early morning to see if we can change the tickets back to Livingstone, Zambia and eat the $160 visa charges. I was also a bit worried about the arrangement that Lovemore had made for our pickup at the border and taken to the ... read more
