This weekend we went to Erindi Game Reserve which was the most amazing experience of our lives!! We saw so many wonderful and beautiful animals that it would be terribly boring if we recounted the whole thing but we will use the next 2 blogs to give you the highlights. Erindi is a 72,000 hectacre privately owned game reserve about 2 hours north of Windhoek. Even on the drive to the park we saw baboons, ostrich, kudu and springbok. As we were driving into the reserve Pam played the soundtrack from Out of Africa which was quite apropos. There is a very fancy lodge on the property and one of their goals is to fatten up all of the humans (they feed you 5-6 times a day). About an hour after lunch every day they have tea time where they serve tea, coffeee and the most delicious cakes! The rooms are gorgeous and fancy and each room has a back porch that looks onto an area with salt licks meant to attract animals. There are 2 game drives daily, one at 630 am and one at 330 pm. The rest of the time you can hang out at the water hole
behind the restaurant and watch animals, relax or whatever.
On our first afternoon game drive after driving through the gorgeous bush for about 30 minutes, our guide, Warren, told us we were going to look for "an animal I left here this morning.". He then pulled off the road and into the bush to search. It got a little crazy when he started plowing over thorn bushes and telling us to keep our eyes peeled. After a few minutes we finally found what he was looking for which was an adult male lion named Minizzle (as in fo'shizzle) He was super chill and just hung out and watched us while we oogled over him and snapped pictures. We were probably about 10 paces away from him in the truck. We also saw a mama and baby white rhino that were so cute!! Unfortunately, they were hiding in the bushes and we didn't get the best pictures. Then later in the same drive we came upon the 4 female cheetahs they have there named the Chocolate Sisters. While we were watching them, they all turned and looked in the same direction and then slowly started stalking a group of kudu.
It was amazing to watching how quiet and patient they can be. After a while they did run off after them but didn't catch anything for us to watch. They were incredibly beautiful though.
The next morning on our drive was found a large family of giraffes including about 4 babies!!! I don't know how many of you are aware of how obsessed I am with giraffes but I was soooo excited! The babies were so cute and curious. Later on that same drive we saw an enormous male elephant. We watched him munch for a while and then he came incredibly close to the back of the truck. There are also lots of tiny antelope, called steinbok that are about the size of a cat and very cute. The males' horned look like toothpicks. After that drive we told Warren that our special interest was baby animals. The rest of the trip we saw baby giraffe, hippos, porcupine, rhino, kudu, oryx, springbok, warthogs, elephants, and baboons, although most of this was pure luck we still thanked Warren for helping us out.
On all of our drives we saw kudu, springbok, impala, warthogs, blue wildebeest, black wildebeest, eland,
oryx, water buck, and hartebeest. Some other animals that we saw but were unable to take pictures of due to their speed or it being too dark at night included: hyena, jackal, bat eared fox, baboons, suicide bunnies, and a bird eating a snake.
