Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Part two of this nefarious travel blog centres around the coastal city of essaouira. after a long, and not hugely interesting journey down there (it is several hundred kilometres away and you need to go via marrakesh) myself, clea the mad danish girl, izzy the kennington lass and dassi the dundee damsel, were immediately accosted as we got off the bus by someone trying to persuade us to stay in his hotel. we resisted his charms, which involved following us at a distance of several metres until we entered the medina, and eventually found the place we had booked. it was [View Full Entry]

January 4 - 7, 2007 Thursday We woke up in Chefchaoen at 5:30 am and left our hotel at 6 am. Our bus was a little late so we ended up pulling out of town at 7:45 rather than 7, regretting that we could have stayed cold in bed longer. The bus was fairly jerky but we were both able to sleep a little because we were very tired. If you’ve read the blog for awhile you know that 5:30 am wakeup calls are not the norm. We arrived in Rabat around noon and took a taxi with a fast meter [View Full Entry]

perhaps we could call this part one of a fascinating travel journal started by me, here in rabat, although the really interesting stuff i'm afraid i don't have time to describe in the detail it deserves, but i am writing it up in an actual journal made of paper, so anyone who wishes can have a look when i get home. we could start at the beginning, but that involves a flight on an aeroplane, which is something most have gone through before. if you want me to go into detail, perhaps describe my feelings, then i can tell you that [View Full Entry]

We roamed the Medina. The Medina was filled with amazing aroamas. The food is so vibrant almost as vibrant as the people. We went to the Kasbah des Oudaia. The views were amazing. The Kasbah reminded me a little of Mykonos Island, in Greece. The blue and white homes stand out so beautifully. We all had a great time exploring! [View Full Entry]

Hello!! Just got back from Morocco...it was truly unbelievable. I have so much to say, I'm not sure if I will be able to put it all down into words in one sitting, but I will do my best. Our group started off last Thursday night by heading to a town in southern Spain called La Linea. We spent the day in nearby Gibraltar, which is a British territory in southern Spain. You need a passport to enter Gibraltar, even though essentially it is only a small town, and they speak British English as well as Spanish there. Lots of fish [View Full Entry]

I hear it alllll the time. 'What do you think about Morocco?' Its THE question to ask foreigners who have up and left their homes for a sojourn here. And particularly when Moroccans discover that I'm staying for a while, this question becomes ever so important. What do I think of Morocco? One of the worst answers you can give is, “its soooo beautiful!” You will, with little exception, solicit from them a contorted expression, and moments thereafter, a veritable dissertation on why Morocco is not just a pretty place. Yes, it’s happened to me. About 3 times now. I've fi [View Full Entry]

Its been two weeks. We've broken. Pizza hut is on tonights agenda. I look forward to a tide of greasy cheese flowing into my stomach, just as waves enter and fill a voided bay ... So? I dont get poetic or sentimental about much... especially since im a junky poet. But yeah, pizza hut, you're worth it. I almost feel shame knowing i've regressed to this point. But, our level of degeneration goes far beyond a meal. Next to the pizza hut, one can also find Marjane- the moroccan equivalent of walmart.........how she tempts us with her low prices on notebooks [View Full Entry]

Morocco. Im here! Honestly, its has surpassed nearly all my expectations.... about food, the way of life, the vibrancy and liveliness. I am soooo very happy here! First, it still boggles my mind that im in Africa . Even though it may be difficult for us to think of Morocco as part of Africa, many people would consider themselves part of Africa before they would consider themselves part of the middle east. Thus, people commonly say to me, " Here in Africa..." and it freaks me out! Many musical and cultural traditions are very much rooted in african culture, and are [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone, It has been another great few days! We realized that we could get to the Mediterranean Sea in only a 90 minute taxi ride from Chefchaouen, so we did a day trip and were able to stay in the Blue City for an extra night. The beach town we went to is called Ouad Lau and the sea was gorgeous! We were the only tourists in sight and the only women (aside from 13 year old girls) wearing bathing suits, but we didn't get any bad looks or anything so we felt okay. They have taxis here called "grand" [View Full Entry]
