Some of the volunteers from our home base have been volunteering at a local orphanage. Today I learnt a few things about the system in Morocco. For starters, most of the kids in the orphanages are boys. This is surprising to learn since it is usually more girls than boys that end up in orphanages in every other country that I have come across. For instance the Mother Teresa’s home in India had 99 girls for every 1 boy as boys get adopted quickly and girls are abandoned by families. The reason in India for this behavior is that a boy is seen as an asset, sort of insurance in old age; whereas a girl is seen as a burden since she would consumer resources for her wedding and then would go off to take care ... read more

The CCS (Cross Cultural Solutions) home base in Rabat is located in an upscale suburb. You can tell by the gated two story bungalows, clean roads and frequent Mercedes passing by here. Also, within walking distance are two malls, one of which is a high end with designer boutiques and a hypermarket. There is a spa, a hair cut place, few restaurants and cafes nearby. The drive into the city takes about 20 minutes and costs about $3 each way. Visiting the spa, I observed women dressed in fashionable western attire and had a status around them. Perhaps these were wives of diplomats or expats. The spa offered everything from aerobics, fat reduction, electro treatments to standard massages and hammam treatment that were sold in packages of 10. Our house is surrounded by a garden and ... read more

My friends travelling with me must be tired of listening to me say "This reminds me of India" dozens of times since we came here. In fact, there are a lot of similarities between India and Morocco, to say the least. Here are a few worth pointing out... Over crowdedness: When I was walking around in Casablanca, it was a similar experience as being in New Delhi i.e. utter chaos everywhere. Traffic pouring from all directions, hundreds of cars and bikes, none following road rules, yet finding their way through the mess without any incidents. My American friends felt very scared of riding in the petit taxis holding on to their seatbealt-less seats in run down cars fearing a collision at every turn. Pollution: Again, the car exhaust fumes, dust, dirt, garbage-quite like any big city ... read more

Thanks for tuning back in. Sorry this took so long. by the end it will all make sense! On Friday, October 8th, the Marist-Seston group embarked to go to Morocco. Hardly any one of us knowing what to expect or where exactly we were going, we hoped on our flight on EasyJet and was Morocco bound. We should have known our adventure was going to be an interesting one when we sat on the plane for about 45 minutes because a passenger had checked in but did not board the plane. Of course my mind is running about a mile a minute but all ended well and we were cruising the sky. As there is a time difference of two hours, our flight was recorded in record speed. I found the runway and stopping point to ... read more

Morocco had been one of the trips that I was most looking forward to. Not only was it going to be my first time to Africa, but I had heard so many great things about the country that I was excited to see what made everyone speak so positively of it. I went with an organization that our school works with called Morocco Exchange (http://moroccoexchange.org/) whose program is run very similarly to the multiple immersion trips that I have done while at Santa Clara with a focus on educating through solidarity and dialogue and with lots of reflection times. There was about 40 people altogether from my program that went but we were divided into groups of about 15 or so once we got there and each group had their entirely own agenda and schedule which ... read more

What a busy day! We are at the Orphanage by about 8 AM and as usual I started the day with the babies in the pink nest. After bathing, changing and feeding I moved over to the 6-12 month nest. I spent most of the morning hanging with Fayoud who was very stinky! They only change diapers 4 times daily. So even if they take a big poo they have to wait until the next changing time. If we had done that with our kids I would have saved a ton of money. LOL! I love spending time with the kids but the routine of the nurses makes me a bit crazy. With a stinky baby I want to change him/her but they won’t let me. About 11 AM they are desperately wanting to sleep but ... read more

I am catching up on my travel blog and writing both Tuesday and Wednesday in one sitting so I apologize if I overlap! As I said on my previous blog I have been suffering with some stomach problems so I did not go to placement this morning. I skipped lunch & breakfast and hoped for the best with an outing to the Chellah ruins this afternoon. What are the Chellah ruins? Here is a little stock background info: Abandoned, crumbling and overgrown, the ancient Roman city of Sala Colonia and the Merenid necropolis of Chellah is an amazing site! The Phoenicians were the first to settle but the town really grew when the Romans took control in about 40 AD. The city was abandoned by the Romans in 1154 in favor of the new city Sale, ... read more

It’s been a crazy few days. I’ve had the obligatory stomach troubles the last two days so straying too far from Home Base (i.e.: the bathroom) has not been a good idea! Both Heidi and Ina have been pretty sick too but with a respiratory infection. Heidi is just back from a CCS placement in Delhi so it could be something she picked up there. There have also been a few other volunteers down with some stomach ‘issues’. When you have 27 people in one house it is bound to happen! On Tuesday afternoon Mohammed gave a lecture on Islam. I have to say I was fascinated throughout the entire lecture. I really didn’t know much of anything and in a 2 hour lecture I feel like I still don’t know much but I am very ... read more

I woke up in Rabat. It is nice being in a hotel with good AC, but I am glad I sweated a little more for my 1st two weeks in Morocco as it felt more authentic… staying in riads is 1,000 times more special than staying in a proper hotel (even though having a pool in the heat is sweet). We got in the car and drove a bit until we hit the Roman city of Volubilis; I can’t remember a time in my entire life that I have been somewhere so old! It was recently deemed a world heritage site. They are waiting/seeking funding so they can start excavating more of this ancient Roman city. It was interesting. Our local guide described how the Romans lived. How the choice of this land was strategic. I ... read more

Salam Alaikum I can’t believe it is Thursday already and after placement tomorrow I am off on a journey to Chefchaouen. The end of the week has really come up fast! I started my morning again with the babies but it was a bit crowded today. Apparently there normally not any other volunteers this time of year but several days this week the Orphanage has been full of nursing students. I did feed 2 babies and then I went over to the yellow nest (6-12 months). Many of the kids were a bit feverish and had snotty heads/noses so they weren’t feeling the best. After their bath and changing process they put them in the big playpen. I hopped in with several others…Jean, Christine, Lori and Jamie. We were soon joined by 2 nursing students as ... read more
