After a last early morning breakfast at the enchanting Riad Salam Fes, it was already time to take our leave of the Imperial City of Fes. The air was cool at this early hour as the sun was still low in the sky, but the pale pinkish light was slowly creeping into the shadow-filled corners of the medina as the residents of Fes were waking up and beginning their busy day. Yesterday’s tour of Fes, while enjoyable, had taken on a frenetic pace as there were so many important sites to see in just one day. The day ahead (Day 6) would mean a lot of time on the bus, but I was looking forward to having “down” time just watching the scenery go by, though I later regretted not taking this opportunity to jot down ... read more

Our second full day in Morocco began with a generous buffet breakfast held in the hotel’s strikingly modern El Patio Restaurant just off the lobby. Even at the early hour of 7am, the restaurant was bustling with activity. Having no appetite, I opted for rolls and tea to settle my stomach. Rick perused the buffet stations which offered both hot and cold choices and came back with a plate of nice selections from both. Rather than a leisurely start to our day, we were forced to eat rather quickly as we still needed to check out of the hotel and confirm that our luggage was actually put into our tour bus’s cargo hold. I was eager to see more of Morocco, but I was disappointed that my being ill in Rabat had prevented us from seeing ... read more

Little and lasting is better than much and passing ~ Moroccan Proverb HE SAID... Today we were travelling south from Volubilis to Meknes. After wandering the windblown ruins of Volubilis in the late morning, we jumped into a taxi and headed to the imperial city of Meknes. We’d passed through the city the day before on our way to Moulay Idriss, but our experience had been limited to the train station. We only had a few hours to explore the city this afternoon before continuing on to Fes, so we were hoping the weather would hold out. The dark rain clouds that had been threatening at Volubilis were becoming more and more ominous… It was raining by the time we arrived. We dropped our packs in the storage room of a local hotel, jumped back into ... read more

Endurance pierces marble ~ Moroccan Proverb HE SAID... Today we were travelling northwest from Moulay Idriss to Volubilis. We emerged from the steep narrow lanes of Moulay Idriss around 9:30am, piled our packs into a waiting taxi and made our way towards the archaeological site of Volubilis, a mere 10 minute drive from the intriguing hillside village we loved so much. Once a distant outpost of the Roman Empire, Volubilis is located in the middle of an agricultural plain, and we soon discovered we were at the mercy of strong winds that amassed incredible force as they made their way across the flatlands of the Fertassa and Khoumane valleys. There were times I could barely stand, which made it difficult to hold a steady camera for photos. I couldn’t help but question Rome’s logic as we ... read more

If one tells you the harira is cold, tell him to put his hand in it… ~ Moroccan Proverb HE SAID... Today we were travelling east from Rabat to Moulay Idriss(via Meknes). After our whistle-stop tour of Rabat, we made our way to the train station in the mid-afternoon. We rugged up against the city’s icy wind as we waited on the platform, then piled onto the train when it eventually pulled into the station. We had tickets with seat numbers, but the ticketing system is not followed on Moroccan trains, so people sit wherever they can find a spare seat. We stood for a while until people got off, then grabbed their abandoned seats before they were seized by someone else. As families became fractured across multiple seats, tempers flared and angry words were exchanged, ... read more

Meknes, Alto Atlas, Morocco January 2019 “When you do something, if you fix your mind on the activity with some confidence, the quality of your state of mind is the activity itself. When you are concentrated on the quality of your being, you are prepared for the activity.” Shunryu Suzuki, Zen Mind Beginner's Mind “The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.” Michelangelo “Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it.” Salvador Dali “Ethics is the activity of man directed to secure the inner perfection of his own personality.” Albert Schweitzer Meknes (33.89352 -5.54727) is located in northern central Morocco close to Fez and is one of the four Imperial cities of the country. Enough of relaxation, it’s time to move on. Today’s highlight is Volubilis, the remains of a Roman city just outside Meknes. It started life as a Berber town, expanded and developed when the Romans, under Claudius in 43AD, annexed the province of Mauretania Tingatana and made Volubilis its capital. The Romans left in around 286AD but the town continued to be occupied long after the Romans left. A lot was destroyed in the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755, and it fell into disrepair when it was abandoned, but the French excavated and restored some of it and it’s now a Unesco World Heritage site. Once again, we haul our luggage through the alleys of the medina to where Hassan is waiting on the road for us. It’s very misty again, and remains so for all but ... read more

Greetings from Midelt, Morocco, as I enjoy a gin and tonic and paprika flavoured potato chips. We have a couple of hours to rest in our room here at the Hotel Taddart before dinner at 8 pm. We had another leisurely breakfast this morning at our riad, and left about 9 am for our drive to Midelt, with various stops along the way. Our first stop was in Ifrane, a small town located in the Middle Atlas mountains. It was built by the French in the 1930s, deliberately to look like an alpine resort. The town, at an elevation of 1,664 metres, gets lots of snow in the winter and is a skiing area. It was markedly cooler in Ifrane, compared to Meknes, due to the elevation. We had a coffee, and a WC break, and ... read more

Travel is the only thing that you buy that makes you richer- Anonymous Greetings from our riad in Meknes, as I sip my gin and tonic, waiting to meet the group shortly for dinner. Last night we met our fellow travellers and trip leader Abdul, who we all love. We are: eight from Australia (John and Barb from Sydney, Greg and Wendy from Queensland, Matthew and Nicole from Sydney, Jeff and Kathy from Brisbane - originally from Canada), two Americans (Linda and Annie - sisters from Chicago), and Susan and I. We had the usual meeting then walked to Les Fleurs restaurant for dinner. There were tourists there (including the Intrepid tour group that leaves Casablanca the same time as us), but there were lots of locals there too. I had a really tasty couscous with ... read more

Wieder ein Tag mit wenig Kilometer aber Millionen Kurven. War die Straße geteert? Am Anfang und Ende. Gab es Brücken? Meistens. Schöne Aussicht? Immer. Verkehr? Nix. Bergrutsche? Straße unterspült? Regelmäßig. Wegweiser? Keine. Navi hilflos. Nächster BMW Heini in Rabat. Ich würde gerne nach Europa kommen. In Südspanien waren viele große MR unterwegs. Übernachtung im Ibis Meknes, was natürlich schwachsinnig ist. Es gibt so viele nette, kleine Hotels.... Aber ich bin ... read more
