Ook ... read more

Last night, we ended up staying right near the Dades Gorge, but we did not get a chance to see much of it since we arrived at our auberge well after the sun had set (which was fantastic across all the pink and red earth). We did have a lovely evening with the rest of of clan and got to know a bit more about most of our companions from: India/London, Paris, Australia, Korea, Japan, Canada Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Barcelona. It was great, lingering over our tajines and talking well into the night in the only warm room in the auberge thanks to the fires that were lit. The morning was not so pleasant, as it was chilly and difficult to get out of my camel blanket cocoon and step on the cold tile ... read more

DAY 7 and 8 We board our mini bus and head off to Todra Gorge; about a 4 hour drive. The landscape changes from sand dunes to rocky dry rolling hills to lush valley then to mountains. (We later rename it Torture Gorge) We stop at a place where they manufacture items from stone with fossils in them. They make beautiful table, sinks, and various small items. Very expensive. Angie buys a small stone fossil and a small gypsum crystal piece. Fran bought a small polished fossil stone. Our hotel is nestled in the palmeries and built upon the mountain side. The staff here are very young and friendly, very good looking young men!! They like to joke around - by asking for our passport when we went to get towels, or telling us they sold ... read more

I heard the morning call to prayers around 05:00hr (must have been from Merzouga) and got up for another sunrise in the desert. This one was better because it wasn’t cloudy. It was back on the camels again to go back to the auberge for breakfast and get cleaned up. About half way back I was kind of numb from the waist down from camel riding but I decided to tough it out. Some people decided to ditch their camels and walk instead near the end. After a quick breakfast and a refreshing shower we were back on the road again. Another long drive took us to palmeries not too far from Todra Gorge. We walked through fields of alfalfa, barley and other fruits/vegetables, not terribly exciting but a welcoming break from our long drive. Todra ... read more

Our blog entries are a little out of sequence, this is mainly due to internet connections and general frustration. In between Marrakesh and the Sahara, we toured to the coast, Essaouaria and then inland to Ait Benhaddou and the Todre and Dades Gorges before reaching the desert. We rented a car and as it turned out, it was a good idea, A/C or not, mainly because we got to see a little of everything and in a shorter time than if by bus. After leaving the sweltering Marakesh, we arrived in Essaouaria. It was a beautiful little town on the coast with a walled UNESCO city center. The cool breezes and 'cold' nights were welcome and I had the best Lamb tajine cooked with apricots and prunes, a strange but scrumptious combo. We left Essaouaria and ... read more

We slept past our half nine alarm and reluctantly got up at ten instead. The room was dark and freezing but outside the sun was beginning to shine. We had breakfast which was just two flat breads with a bowl of jam and a bowl of butter. We were told by a guy at the hotel that there was a great walk that took four and a half hours and went through the gorge and then up and over. We thought it sounded great, so we got his directions. He told us to walk through the gorge until you came to the first village with shops etc. From there you took a left turn and climb up etc. We left at approximately quarter to eleven and from our hotel the walk through the gorge is amazing. ... read more

We were almost allowed our sleep in although a cleaner knocked on the door just as we were about to get up. The CTM bus was to leave at twelve but due to a miscalculation on our behalf we arrived half an hour early. There was nobody there, no hustlers, beggars or children selling chocolates etc. We paid our 5dh each for baggage and didn't even have to argue for the correct price. We got on the bus and it set off on time and with minimum fuss and no last Minute bodies diving through the side door just as we were leaving. All quite pleasant but eerily unlike our other Moroccan experiences. We got off the bus in Tinerhir and before we could even get our bags we had a crowd of people surrounding us ... read more

Continuous steep, high walls make this gorge at the foot of the Atlas Mountains a very impressive place. I could hardly guess my bike would take me this far the first time I glanced at pictures of Todra Gorge in a climbing magazine. Getting to the gorge in the dark early evening I couldn't really check around for the most convenient available accommodation but Etoile des Gorges soon turned out to be the best choice: friendly staff, great food and good location. I felt at home the nine days I stayed there. The climbing is great and very diverse. Although I socialized with people in the evenings, I mostly climbed on my own; the first day on routes with very sharp small holds (which is fine by me if they're not steep!) and then several days ... read more

We are in Rabat but camping in the next town across the river called Sale, it is next to the river front and you can smell the delicious fish being cooked from the various food stalls, we took a walk for a bit around the ocean front and it was full of rubbish and next to slum looking area, some people are fishing as well. The people are very nice and greet us politely as we walk along, Mark almost got bitten by a dog but didnnt so that was good. We are staying here mainly to apply for visas to Mauritania and Mali, we stayed for three nights , we cant really go around town until after noon to make sure we are around if problems with visas arise. We drove as far as we ... read more
