Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

We started with a visit of the exteriors of yet another Royal Palace, this time in Fes. The guards are dressed in different uniforms and were friendly enough for me to get a picture with them. Then we went to a lookout point with panoramic view of the city of Fes before going to the medina to experience getting lost. One of the highlights here is the medieval tanneries. I knew we were getting close because the smell was really pungent. The best way to see the tannery is from one of many terraces overlooking the dying vats. At the entrance [View Full Entry]

My last post spoke of Sevillan shit-stained sidewalks, sanitation sorrows, sodomizing Senoras (that is to say, Senoras who sodomize, not the act of sodomizing any particular Senora…Vincent…), sumptuous 90’s sing-along songs, Spanish semantics, spontaneous Scottish sprees, and supper-table shame. All alliteration aside, for some reason or another it turned out to be an excrement heavy entry. Perhaps I view the world with shit colored glasses (these days, I’m not even sure what color that would be…), but whatever the reason, I seem to be inextricably linked with [View Full Entry]

I am nearly at a loss for words as I attempt to write to you about my most recent experience in Morocco. In actuality, it was one of the best trips I have ever taken in my life, and one of the craziest. Our group sat on a bus for 60 hours within a span 6 days, camped in the middle of the Sahara desert, rode camels, and visited a traditional medina or market in Fez, the third largest city in Morocco. Despite my hesitance at my ability to communicate my sentiments to you, I shall begin back in Granada, [View Full Entry]

This week, I went on a 6 day trip through a few parts of Morocco! It was amazing. I went with a group of about 100 people my age, mostly girls, mostly american students. Here, I will tell you how it went down! Day 1 (Friday, April 3) I woke up at about 4am after going to sleep at about 2. I do not recommend that sleeping schedule AT ALL!! I got ready and walked down the street to where we were all meeting the bus. We pulled out of Sevilla at 5:15am and were headed for the Southern border of [View Full Entry]

And I thought the lst keyboard was crazy. Q is where a should be and I just spent a minute trying to find z. Good thing I look at the keys when I type. beware of no spell check and very bad grammer. Stockholm seems like a million years ago. The drive was great. We found the B&B easily and took the train into town. It was cold and windy but we ate hotdogs and watched a ski race through through the city. We were tired so we bought pizza and went bqck to the room and watched animal planet. In [View Full Entry]

Hi, I am writing this in the dark while Evan and Norah have a nap. Everyone was up late last night and early this morning. Norah always gets us up early with a "It's morning time!!!!" Just because it is light out! Rick is odd exploring the new medina on his own. Sunday March 22 - So, we had a good night sleep and we were ready to look around at what Fez had to offer. We met the driver at the coffee shop nearby and headed into the old medina. It was built in the 12 century. As opposed to [View Full Entry]

It’s been a long time coming, but internet or computer shutdowns due to power failures & sorting out 2 months worth of mail + Tax when we got back have been frustrating to say the least. To sum up Morocco - Mint tea….. & Tiles! We were met by our driver “Ahmed” & are driven to the Al Djeema mosque. The minaret is some 150ft tall with a green dome top, over looking the coastline. Non Muslims are not allowed inside, but we can see into the through huge carved wooden doors & arches. There are mosaic tiles everywhere, on [View Full Entry]

I took a bus across the border from Mellila to Nador. No Hassle at the border. Only remark I got was Mischa VAN?? No family of VAN Basten? Nope! A lot of the Morrocons still live in the past, it is always Gullit, Kruiff, van Basten, Rijkaard. Anyway after a beautiful trip, as it is spring after all in Morocco, I arrived in Fès, entered through the Bab (gate) el Mahrouk and entered the medieval times... After waving off some touts, faux guides, whatever you want to call them, I found the ryad I wanted to stay, full! So I had [View Full Entry]
