Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

March 14, 2008 This morning came very quickly as Julie and I had to leave home at 5:00 am (4:30 wake-up for me!) to catch the bus around 5:45 for out 6:00 departure. Bus ride #1 was a little over 2 hours and took us to Algeciras, Spain, to catch the ferry across the Mediterranean Sea. That was the first time I have been on a ship that big, but due to the little sleep I had had, I slept most of the hour ride. We finally made it to AFRICA! We arrived in Ceuta which is still a Spanish territory. [View Full Entry]

Fes tanneries Africa » Morocco » Fès-Boulemane » Fes
Welcome to our new blog. We were blogging on blogger.com but ran into problems when we were in Morocco and looking after a bit of searching around we found this site which we will be using from now on. This entry describes some of the tanneries we saw in Fes last week. We tried to put this up on blogger but it got a bit overwhelmed. Which is just how we felt when confronted with the powerful smell emanating from some of these ancient tanneries. A part of the process of turning the animal hides (camel, goat, sheep, cow) into leather [View Full Entry]

This is the town of Chefchouen.. Great place to just relax..
WOW thats all I can say.. From the beaches of Rio to the shores of Tangier, there could not be two more opposite places. I had never been in a Muslim country before and what a shock. Morocco is a bit intence at first (well all the time really) but you get used to it after a few days, from the venders to the "friends" you meet on the street who just want to help a tourist out for a small price. The first couple times you fall victim to them all but once you get it a feel to how [View Full Entry]

Whilst I did my usual morning routine, rob got up and ate yoghurt for breakfast. Once we were ready to leave for the day Rob decided that he was in the mood for a Mcflurry, so off we went to McDonalds. It was because the sun was shining that we decided to visit the panoramic view of Fes, however we didn't really think properly about it. We had left the hotel without sun cream and neither of us was prepared for the heat. The walk should only have been a short one but it took us quite a while with frequent [View Full Entry]

We were up and dressed ready to meet Anthony for half nine. We found a decent café to have juice and a pastry for breakfast and we also bought bread for dinner later. I quickly nipped next door to an internet café to ring dad about interviews. It looks like its mixed news; I have two interviews, but the dates are before our flight home. The main aim of today was to get away from the city and see a nice pretty town with a few sights and add a few more names to our places we have visited list. We [View Full Entry]

Having a bed that wasn't entirely hard meant that we could actually have a sleep in. Even when we woke up we chatted and lounged around for a bit. When we did get up we noticed that the sun was shining which hasn't happened for a while. The central market seemed like a good idea for picnic stuffs initially, but we blatantly forgot that we were in the middle of Morocco. We strode into the market place and then just as quickly as it took our eyes to adjust to the light, we strode right back out again. Saying that my [View Full Entry]

Our plans to rise early to escape Meknes were thwarted by sheer laziness on our behalf. However due to our recent bouts of illness we are blaming it entirely on a lack of energy. When we did leave the hotel, it took some doing to get us both with our backpacks to the top of the hill. The train station was comfortingly European and the French language announcements were almost completely understood. The train was delayed but we didn't mind one iota as the sun was shining and we got to watch a nosy rabble of football fans arrive on the [View Full Entry]

Chefchaouen to Fes Africa » Morocco » Fès-Boulemane » Fes
Our last night in Chefchaouen we met a Moroccan fellow at our hotel. Mohamed is from Fes, and speaks only French and Arabic. We had quite the evening with him trying to communicate, but it was fun. Out came the French/English dictionary, the phrasebook and lots of charades! We ended up playing a few hands of cards and swapping stories (as best we could) - it was an evening we won't soon forget. Mohamed asked if we liked olives, and I said no, but Peter LOVES them and is in olive heaven here! Mohamed laughed and pointed at Peter and said [View Full Entry]

After a couple of days in Meknes, we went to the train station and, while talking to and petting a cat, struck up a conversation with a well dressed man by the name of Rida. He told us he was an engineer from Fez just returning home, and that he would be pleased if we could meet him for some tea at 1800 that night and gave us a shred of paper with the name of a restaurant scribbled on it. We got on the train to Fez, and ignoring the "mosquitos" as Rida had called the touts and cab drivers [View Full Entry]
