Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Hi, I am writing this in the dark while Evan and Norah have a nap. Everyone was up late last night and early this morning. Norah always gets us up early with a "It's morning time!!!!" Just because it is light out! Rick is odd exploring the new medina on his own. Sunday March 22 - So, we had a good night sleep and we were ready to look around at what Fez had to offer. We met the driver at the coffee shop nearby and headed into the old medina. It was built in the 12 century. As opposed to [View Full Entry]

I took a bus across the border from Mellila to Nador. No Hassle at the border. Only remark I got was Mischa VAN?? No family of VAN Basten? Nope! A lot of the Morrocons still live in the past, it is always Gullit, Kruiff, van Basten, Rijkaard. Anyway after a beautiful trip, as it is spring after all in Morocco, I arrived in Fès, entered through the Bab (gate) el Mahrouk and entered the medieval times... After waving off some touts, faux guides, whatever you want to call them, I found the ryad I wanted to stay, full! So I had [View Full Entry]

December 28 - 31, 2006 Completing this entry more than two years after we were in Morocco it struck us how lazy and boring we were in Fes (and maybe all of Morocco). We think at least our initial laziness boils down to a few things. First, we arrived in Morocco right before Eid-al-Adha (there are various names for this holiday used around the Muslim world) and we received conflicting information both before and after arriving in Morocco as to what impact this would have on our visit. Information ranged to the extreme in many cases, suggesting nothing - absolutely nothing [View Full Entry]

We got up rather too early for my liking to catch the catamaran from Algeciras to Ceuta. We got some great views of Gibraltar from the boat, and the crossing wasn't too rough (although I don't think I should get a job where I have to walk around on a swaying boat!). In Ceuta (a Spanish enclave on the North African coast), we had to queue for quite a long time to cross the border into Morocco. From the border, we drove through the very scenic Rif mountains towards Fes. It was very interesting to see lots of busy little villages [View Full Entry]

Now in Fes! After 2 nights in Chefchaouen am now in Fes. I wanted to do a little exploring on own, so i have set out by myself and started exploring the vast medina - market - it is busy and fun, i have a few pics from here and a bunch from Chefchaouen. These keyboards are still making me crazy, and i am anxious to get back out there, so this will be a short entry. We are staying at some budget lodging very near the main gate to the medina. They are refurbishing the archway - see the pic [View Full Entry]

I'm in Africa! The statement itself is unbelievable; 2 months ago I had no idea I'd be here. Yesterday I went to La Medina in Fes, it's one of the largest and oldest surviving markets (dating from the 8th century) in the world. I haggled with the best of 'em and purchased two exquisite pashminas, herbs from the natural pharmacy, and a legitimate, handmade, silk carpet that will look amazing beside my bed. The shopping was endless and had we not gone back to the hotel after lunch, who knows what else I would have come home with. Right now I'm [View Full Entry]

I arrived in Morocco several days ago now, and I want to say, "Welcome back to the sights, smells and tastes of the 3rd World!" On Friday the 19th, we boarded the Tanger Jet for the supposed 1:00 pm departure for Tangiers. While waiting, we received an announcement that due to mechanical problems, we would have to take the 3:00 pm ferry instead. It felt like a refugee exodus with everyone lugging personal belongings, as we all abandoned ship! There were many day trippers from Spain, going over to Tangiers for some shopping. I met Andy and Dora from London onboard, [View Full Entry]
