Man, man, man mijn achterste deed serieus pijn.

In Ethiopian airport moesten we overstappen. Op weg naar de ... read more

So Friday comes and I have no idea what to do for the weekend. The clinic will be closed, so there is no need to get up early for work. As I am talking to one of the Baylor doc's about a patient, she stops in the middle of everything and invites me to come with them to Lake Malawi. The lake is one of the major tourist attractions in the country. Needless to say, I am excited about the invitation. Lake Malawi was definitely on the list of places to see while I'm here. The water is supposed to be beautiful. We finish up at clinic by 4pm, and I try to hunt down someone to take me home. The public transportation system consist of a minibus system. I have yet to master it since ... read more

Narrow strips of sunlight broke through the badly constructed walls of the shack - which according to its’ sign - claimed to be a RETSULAUNT. The floor consisted of evened out cow-dung, a greyish-brown sense of cool, on which I lay flat on my back, trying to soak up as much coolness as possible. Outside the day was sweltering and languid. The men of Karonga sat chattering on rickety benches in the shade while the women sat in the belching sun outside the rice mill, with their heavy sacks of produce. Aili lay next to me on the ground and was already fast asleep. She was just as exhausted and over-heated as me, if not more. The kind owner of the “retsulaunt” walked barefoot back and forth a few inches from my head. She had a ... read more

After a mammoth bus ride of about 14 hours across Tanzania (note to self: no matter how long, hot and dusty the bus ride, there's no point in paying extra for the "deluxe" air-conditioned, toilet-on-board service when the air con doesn't work and the toilet is out of order) we arrived in Mbeya, a border town in the South. We were so knackered and fed up that we were even daft enough to pay another bus company to take us all way across the border into Malawi and on to Mzuzu the next day. Bad idea. It didn't dawn on our fatigued and sleep deprived brains that it was an unlikely deal, and a tad expensive... Oh well you live and learn. We got across the Malawian border (less than half way) and the promised second ... read more

Mon 28 May Emerged from our dingy Travelodge and gave the battery another wallop and Jonathan appeared to guide us to a local mechanic who charged £2 for parts (new connectors) and a £2 tip for his time. But for the rest of the trip I was never 100% confident about the go-anywhere reliability of the 4x4, especially as the back door kept jamming, the exotic gauges (altimeter, compass, angle we were tipped at, etc) all had very wild readings, and a few other niggles. And we were to travel miles from anywhere on some very poor roads. Spent the morning shopping for Tamsin’s ‘teacher aids’ - door locks, lamps, clocks, etc. Then farewell to Jonathan and Cecilia who headed off to catch the evening ferry, and we headed the other way for an hour down ... read more

Sat 26 May Off to catch the evening boat (the Ilala - it’s the only one) to the Malawi mainland at Nkhata Bay. The ferry journey was 'an experience'. We actually had a nice cabin. But loading from Likoma where there is no jetty was like a war time evacuation. Lots of overloaded small boats carrying goods and people in the dark out to the ferry where we clambered up a ladder. And the arrival was a stampede to get goods to market - and trying to check tickets as people got off seemed a bit late in the day. Sun 27 May Reached mainland at Nkhata Bay and much to everyone's amazement the hire car I had booked in Lilongwe (a big Mitsubishi 4wd ) was there. Minimal formalities and I paid cash as ... read more

Back Again... This time just a quick note.. The last week i have been spending my mornings at the local nursery school with the tiny tots whom are adoreable. The first days i was there i would make at least one of the kids cry when they saw me.. ow :( but thankfully their getting used to the Mzungu. The poor teachers have no supplies including sugar which is the main drawcard to get the kids to school as they give them tea, but lately have not been able to. From the picture you can see their toy cupboard consists of a mere couple of pieces of lego so we struggle to keep them entertained. I've chipped in as much as possible but if anyone has any old toys, clothing etc that they no longer ... read more
