My tummy bug slowly cleared, and i took a lift in the back of a truck that a german family had hired to get to chipoka to meet the ferry on friday. The truck was 2 hours late arriving, leaving barely enough time to get to the port. It then ran out of petrol in the middle of lilongwe and we had to push it to a petrol station. Arrived at chipoka just before 4, when the boat was supposed to be leaving, and found that it was delayed by 4hrs. Sat in the waiting shed, having a couple of beers. The sun went down, and then the electricity failed, so one of the german guys got out his mini speakers and cd player and played disco tunes. Quite odd. We went up on the 1st ... read more

By the strange whims of Malawian transport, the 12:30 Axa bus to Mzuzu - the poshest of the country’s bus lines - pulls into the Lilongwe depot at half-past eleven, its seats already full, its aisles crowded with buckets and bags of produce leaking onto the floor. After a placid morning at Mabuya Camp, a cup of coffee and a lazy hour spent sending emails, the day’s taken a turn for the oh-shit. Undeterred by the crush of bodies inside, the conductor is happy to take my fistful of kwacha, unswayed by my insistence that maybe anyone forced to stand for the five-hour haul to Mzuzu should be entitled to some sort of charity rate. He laughs and shoves me not ungently inside, as if to say, “White people! You say the funniest things!” On a ... read more

Nkhata Bay is yet another perfect place to do absolutely nothing and has test backpackers with the best food in Africa so far. To have the best food is not that hard as most places specialize in Chicken and (very soggy) chips. Nkhata bay is as small bay on Lake Malawi with a small sleepy village. It is hard to believe that this was once the most important town in the area. The one thing that made it very attractive is a deep harbor which allowed and still does allow big ships to port. My best guess is that these days this means a visit by the Ilala ferry twice a week. The idea was to stay in Nkhata bay until Tuesday and then go straight to MBeya in Tanzania to catch a train to Dar ... read more

Today, Monday, we went to Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve. It was fantastic, we have never seen so many elephants together in their herds it was an amazing sight. We also saw hippos and monkeys. It was very dry and dusty and we were covered in dust from the road we were travelling on. It has been very sunny and hot today. This evening we have been invited to Rev. Levi Neyondo's home to have a meal with his family. Thanks everyone who is leaving messages and comments, its really nice to get them. Thanks. Speak soon! ... read more

We have been enjoying two days of rest. Yesterday (Friday) we went to the beach, it was truly the most beautiful beach we have ever seen, we wanted to stay there but the people we are staying with prefer it if we return back to base but that's fine by us. On the journey there we stopped off at a place where there were lots of wood carvings for us to buy as well as pictures and other gifts to take home. We did lots of bartering with the people selling the goods and, on one occasion, managed to buy a picture by handing over a small sum of money and a pair of shorts! Our meal last night was in a hotel. We have to be in by 10 pm, it is not allowed to ... read more

Yesterday we went Geisha school to continue working on the school block by painting it with lime protector. We then went back in the afternoon where the girls played netball with local Malawian girls and the boys played football against local malawian boys. Unfortunately both teams got beaten! At night we went out for tea to a indian restuarant, it was ok, service was a tad slow though. Today we went to Masasa high school and were given a tour of the premises. We were also given the opportunity to sit in a lesson of either RS or maths. We were given a very nice send off from staff and pupils. In the afternoon we went back to Geisha primary where we had a goodbye service from staff and local people. We are very proud of the ... read more

Yesterday we went for orientation to the primary school to meet the children, teachers, head villagemen and important councillors of education. They performed a display of traditional African singing, dancing and poetry. We were presented with a gift. The gift turned out to be 60 eggs...and a live goat! The goat is, in fact, no longer...we had a BBQ last night! Not necessarily a good experience for all! Today we headed off to Geisha Primary School for our first day of work experience. The girls painted two classrooms and the office and the guys moved bricks and helped with building work. We also helped to plant some trees, one of which is named 'Blairgowrie High Tree'. This evening we met some teenagers from the local High School Masasa, and we spent some time getting to know ... read more

The group arrived at their destination in the early evening on Sunday the 8th June. They were given an amazing welcome by the people of the community who sang to them and prepared a wonderful meal. Everyone is very friendly. Monday - after a well earned sleep the group visited the school and met some of the children who were delighted with the gifts they had brought with them. There is a problem with the communication at the moment so the blog may not be updated just as often as they had hoped.... read more

Hello All, After a long journey, we have arrived in Ekwendeni safe and sound. We have been warmly welcomed by everyone we meet and it has been an extraordinary journey so far. We only have a few minutes right now as we are just about to depart from the hospital to a small village, Ekwenweni, to lend a hand dstay for the night. Everyone seems quite excited as we will be demonstrating how to make a "wedding cake" in hopes that the local women can continue to do so and create a business from this. Wish us luck as we will be baking on an open fire! No photos yet as we have jsut been summoned to go and load up for the journey. We will post again when we can. ... read more

Bijna iedereen ... read more
