We set off early with the aim of making the border, we didn’t expect such good roads but we didn’t expect such hassle crossing the border. We’re here now all safe and sound though. We got up early expecting the roads to be busy and not so good but we were wrong. We were treated to ever emptier roads heading toward the border on ever better roads. As such we made the border crossing at Moyale for lunchtime. Unfortunately in classic African style the border was closed from 1200-1400 for luch. When the Ethiopians returned the exit was relatively speedy and efficient, they didn’t seem to care much about the content of the car but were very keen to check the engine number of the car (perhaps this is a smugglers tactic?). Unfortunately when we got ... read more

As we felt ok with the altitude (with the help of Diamox!) we skipped the acclimatisation day and instead used this day to hike the 5km up to the next hut which would significantly cut down the night hike tomorrow morning. Whilst holding the dodgy toilet door shut for Chavaunne I got a lovely view of a mountain eagle! There were also several rock hyrax handing around the camp. The hike started with a nice gentle incline up the valley then went steeply up the scree slope, which we needed to take very “pole pole”! The only vegetation up here was some moss, lichen and a scattering of pretty yellow flowers. After what felt like ages but was only a few hours we made it over the ridge down to the Austrian Hut at 4790m by ... read more

We packed our bags and had a tasty cooked breakfast in time to set off at 7am for our hardest day of uphill. We started by retracing our steps from yesterday afternoon up the track, then turned off onto a footpath through the Hygenia forest and then out onto the more open heathland before climbing through the dramatically named 'Vertical Bog' (not that dissimilar from many peatbogs back home. The first half of the day’s walk was the steepest and after lunch it levelled off a bit through more open areas of tree heathers and lobelias (including Lobelia deckenii & L. telekii) fading into grassland in the Teleki Valley. There were lots of vole-runs through the grass – made by mice I was told. We arrived at MacKinders Hut, on an outcrop of moraine ... read more

We had an early breakfast at 6am before setting off for a morning game drive whilst the sun was still below the horizon. It was rather chilly standing in the minivan with the roof up but watching the sunrise over My Kenya was spectacular. As was coming across a family of lions with cubs playing on the road! Lions – a pride of 9 (incl. 4 adorable cubs) plus a group of 3 (2 males & a female post coitus!) Reticulated giraffe Silver-backed jackal Impala Grant’s gazelles Thompson’s gazelles Warthogs Superb starlings Buffalo Eland Burchell’s zebra Brown Snake Eagle (I think) Hawk sp. We left Ol Pejeta & headed to a nearby town to meet Cyrus, our guide for Mt Kenya at 10am. He joined us in the van for the drive to the Naro Moru ... read more

We headed north out of Nairobi early the next day heading to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, home of the world’s two only surviving northern white rhinos. We had a brief stop to get some water & peanuts and other to go to the loo & look around a souvenir shop we bought a couple of bracelets. During the drive we also got our first sight of Mt Kenya with snow-capped peak & a growing cover of cloud. We checked into our room at The Stables and had a late lunch before heading out on my first safari drive! This also included a visit to Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Baraka, the black rhino who being blind was removed from the wild to his own large enclosure and now acts as their rhino ambassador. We also crossed the equator ... read more

I said goodbye to the left African Bat Conservation team (including honorary additional Patrick!) at 7am and was taken to Lilongwe airport to catch my flight to Nairobi. I was a bit miffed that the lady at security confiscated my spare AAA batteries in spite of all online information saying they are fine to have in hand luggage but luckily Chavaunne was able to buy me some more at Heathrow! The rest of the flight went smoothly however and after a queue to get my visa I quickly got my bag & headed out to find Moses – our guide and driver from Adventure Alternative. As it was already afternoon I didn’t have much time to see Nairobi but I did get to visit the Giraffe Centre where I got to meet several Rothschild giraffes including ... read more

We had a relatively leisurely start in the hope the roads could only improve as we approached Ethiopia, but that was an incorrect assumption. The roads through the park were even worse as we headed North to reach the Ethiopian border, so much so that along the way we managed to bend the front bumper backwards on itself. In the end Nelly just couldn’t handle hitting so many rocks along the way. Eventually we cleared the park and got on to a proper road toward the Ethiopian border, except it wasn’t a road at all. The highlight of the road was it ending in a 6 foot high wall of mud. It was clear where our road stopped and the road kept going but somehow we had to get the truck 6ft up a vertical wall. ... read more

Well we made it to Sibioli National Park, the fact that only 12 foreigners have visited the park this year should give you an indication of quite how hard it is to get to. We left Logangali reasonably early, knowing that it would be “tough” going but decided to stop at the Desert museum just out of town for a cultural top-up. Whilst it was interesting and show a lot of local culture, it was reasonably speaking a few tables or ornaments including what looked like a walking stick which was used to throw at dik-diks (small antelope) and kill them. So all this time it isn’t a walking stick, it’s a dik-dik stick. The road to the national park took us through a combination of different terrains including: 1. Sand that went rather deep and ... read more

We are now at lake Turkana at a place called Loyaglani (or something close). We left Nanyuki this morning and past Archers Post after an hour on tarmac we got onto dirt tracks for another 6 hours of eventful driving to the remote North of Kenya. The road started OK in that someone at sometime in the past had tried to make it a road, but very quickly the road got worse with parts falling away through dried up river beds. After a while we got corrugations which are like mini speed humps across the road and they shake the car apart. The secret is to go fast enough to ride over them and not fall in the holes the other side. However getting to the right speed is often a bone-rattling experience. We passed a ... read more

We have made it to Nanyuki near Mount Kenya after some fairly eventful driving both day and night. However we did break a golden rule of driving at night, but we think with good reason. Let me explain... We left Mombasa at 6pm on Wednesday. Unfortunately the President was apparently in town and just to add to it they seem to be re-building every major road going. All told we took an hour to get off the island and the sun was setting so we had a decision, find a place to stay or keep going. Well the outskirts of Mombasa are not the kind of place you want to stop and in fact we took a wrong turn and ended up in a much lesser part of town with no roads and we had to ... read more
