As we got off the airport at 6:30 am we realized we were finally at our destination, the trip we have anticipated for so long, we were in Kenya! I was so excited and nervous at the same time to finally be in the country we have been waiting to be in all year. As we looked outside the sky was a gray atmosphere, the roads were aged and cracked, the traffic was hectic but we were in Kenya! Although as we got on to our bus we met our driver who would transport us many times during our trip and his name was Tom. For a bus driver he was a nice guy and a decent driver. As the bus rode through the crowded and busy roads of Nairobi I noticed that the region was ... read more

Hey all!!! Sorry to keep you all on the edge of your seats about where in the world I am currently!!! I'm finally back "home" in kenya after a tough month in Egypt! The reason for such a long delay between posts was, first, my departure from egypt was anything BUT magical! haha The chairperson in egypt ended up being a complete PSYCHO!!! During our final fight, I decided it was just best to leave and head to kenya where I knew people would love to have me! So on that note, I did a quick tour of the pyramids and the huge market in cairo and jet setted off to Kenya! Even when I set foot off the plane in the wee morn'n hours of August 2nd I knew I was home, the combinations of ... read more

Hmm, I feel some pressure to make this remotely interesting.. but all I really have to say at the moment is that I've made it safely to Nairobi, and now I'm ready to get out of here! Not that there's anything wrong with the city- I have all the best spots for good Indian food and coffee, etc scoped out.. but I'm SO ready to be in the field!! I got my first "mama" taxi driver EVER to take me from the airport- she let me know I was "very lucky", as she is 1 of only 4 female taxi drivers in her company of 200... she let me practice my swahili with her, which we both found hilarious- mostly her :) ... people here are always ready to laugh and have a good time, which ... read more

So, whenever I’m in a situation where I try to blog regularly (like tour or in Africa), as I go throughout my day, I try to make note of things to include. On a regular basis, there are things I forget to post. Sometimes, it’s even the funniest thing of the day. Once, I titled the blog about something that we saw, and then forgot to explain it! Here is a recap of some funny or interesting things that I forgot to mention. On Aug 2, when we were walking back from the hotel where we used internet, we were careful not to get mugged. As we were walking, I tripped on something and took a pretty good fall. I got mugged by the ground. At least nothing was stolen ☺ When we were at the ... read more

The flight from Chicago to Istanbul was pretty good. I sat next to some Turkish guy with a LaCoste shirt with his collar popped. I think he was gay. I was a little nervous getting onto the connecting flight but it was good. It was so easy. The Istanbul airport was soooo nice the view was amazing. All the houses there were so cute. When I got onto the plane from Istanbul to Nairobi I sat next to a guy from Kenya so that was nice. I think his name is lucas. He told me some stories about Kenya and things to watch out for. I kept falling asleep and I was in the middle of reading and started falling asleep and dropped the book and fell over it was pretty funny. When I was sleeping ... read more

Hi Everyone, We've finally arrived in Kenya, the first night was ok after we finally negotiated a taxi fare after our transfer failed to turn up, after a few hairy moments we made it to camp and met up with some fellow travellers, it was good to have a hot shower which we weren't expecting, the first thing we noticed was how cold it was, we left for Nairobi on monday morning and started the tour after joining everyone on our truck. Our first night was spent on a campsite on lake Nakuru just north of Nairobi, but we went to Joy Adamson's home (founder of born free) which was really nice, we had high tea and cakes! We then went back to the campsite, where some other members of our group had to cook dinner ... read more

I got to sleep in today! Today was maybe the first day I got to sleep in and not worry about people waking me up or having anything specific to get up for. Sarah is a great roommate because she knows I like to sleep, so she doesn’t do anything dumb like turn on the lights. Plus, she always brings me breakfast. We took most of the morning off, just chilling and writing and fighting with the internet. Once we got hungry again, we headed into town. The man at the front desk said it was too far for us to walk, but we probably could have done it, though I’m glad we didn’t. We grabbed a bus, a Citi Hoppa, and headed in. Sarah made a cute friend on the bus, and he gave us ... read more

Bud and Robertta left for Tanzania this morning, so they had to wake everyone up to say goodbye. I was up super late burning CDs for them, so I didn’t move. Still, it wasn’t near as much sleep as I wanted or needed. Sarah and I got all of our things packed up and ready to go. A former Choir kid, Charles, was due to pick us up for a day on the town. After a bit of rearranging which hotel we were staying at and who was booking rooms, we moved our luggage down the street and hit the road. Andrew was our driver for the day. Our first stop was the Elephant Orphanage. It is a rescue for baby elephants and rhinos that have lost their mothers. They are only open from 11 to ... read more

I did some counting the other day. I counted the number of blankets I have in my house. Between the three beds I have nine soft blankets and in my closet are a few more along with two warm sleeping bags. Then, there are a few small covers as well as cotton and flannel sheets. Next was a trip to my bookshelves where I counted the different types of Bibles that I have a choice to read; NIV, Amplified, Romanian, Student Bible and a pink Women's Devotional Bible. Last was a trip to my pantry to count the types of beans that are waiting to be eaten; One bag of pintos and a can of black. The reason for all the counting was brought on by my trip to the one of the many Internally Displaced ... read more

Day 1 - London - 30th July Finally, I somehow manage to arrive on the African continent. I say somehow as due to packing fiascos; have I packed enough, have I packed too much, could it be repacked better, forgetting to pack stuff (I own 3 pairs of sunglasses but managed to pack none!) and other little dramas along to way I somehow manage to arrive in Nairobi. Even when my standby ticket was confirmed and having 20 minutes to get threw security, to the gate and onto the aircraft; not even having to run and step round people like Cristano Ronaldo does with a football managed to stop me! However, I manage to arrive but my luggage didn’t, wait for a couple of hours to be told that my bag was still in London …. ... read more
