I think I may be getting a hang of this Amhara dance after all! I was pulled up AGAIN at a Habesha restaurant on Saturday, only this time it didn’t end with me cowering in a red-faced ball in my Axum-shaped chair, but with a shoulder-touch and a sincere ‘ammesegnallehu’ from the dancer!! That’s right -- I’m setting my shoulders loose in Addis!! Haha I sincerely hope that all of my friends and family forget that comment a few months from now and spare me from having to “prove it” with a demonstration. I already have a list of excuses prepared: “Sorry, long flight, shoulder cramp” or “I really would love to, but this music doesn’t have the right beat”… the list goes on. It probably wasn’t too smart to stay out passed midnight on Saturday ... read more

On our way to the university we passed by a large crowd and a guarded street. I have asked three people, Joseph, Samuel and Temesgen about this and though the stories differ a little in the smaller details the big picture is the same. This lady hotel owner evidently killed an employee. She owned the green hotel, which is in the residential section, no way a tourist would find it. The guy lost some money or something, so she killed him and buried him. Neighbors complained about a smell, so she killed a dog and said the dog was the source. Cops came and found the body the day before we drove by. When they took her away the crowd was chanting “kill her, crucify her.” We were told she was not well liked to begin ... read more

I ran into Zelalem walking home from work one day. He was with an American who is helping his father start a coffee business here in Ethiopia, (his father is gone, only he is here). We got to talking, he is actually from San Fran, and now he is pretty much our 3rd Amigo. In honor of this I will call him Little Neddy Neddenlander…Three Amigos, Martin Short’s character. Anyways, his family somehow knows Zelalem and he has been helping them with translation and paying fair prices instead of Ferenji-fied prices. Neddy suggested we go to Zelalem’s church for the experience and I was totally down. That Sunday we went to the church. Like all homes in Ethiopia it was behind a metal gate, but this one had big red crosses on it. The church was ... read more

On Saturday I woke up and checked on my compatriot. She opened the door looking more disheveled than usual. I told her so, and she said that she had the highest fever she has ever had in her life and she is basically on her death bed. She said she had cooled off and touched my hand, she was on fire. We were supposed to meet Samuel that day to help with shopping. She gave me a list of things to do: email her husband, buy water, buy crackers, buy bananas, buy 1 coffee pot, 8 baskets, and 10 of these little furry things. I emailed her husband and got the water, crackers and bananas right away. Samuel and I spent the next few hours getting the rest of her list. She came out to join ... read more

So we took Joseph and introduced him to Temesgen who is a Jimma University student. They talked about his options. Evidently Joseph wont be able to go to Jimma U because he doesn’t have his diploma. He completed grades 9, 10, and 11, but not 12. Grades 1-10 are their standard schooling, 11 and 12 are mandatory college prep years. So we were like ok, what can we do. We went to a school near the university that offered diplomas, but it turns out they only offer courses in Oromifan, and Joseph speaks Amharic. There is no GED equivalent in Ethiopia, we asked. Long story short he only has a couple of options: go to a technical school, repeat grades 9, 10, 11 and finish 12, or move to Addis and take diploma courses. He mentioned ... read more

I met someone and exchanged numbers. He wanted my first name, then he asked my father’s name and went to input that, David Stephen, as my name in his phone. I tried to explain, my last name is not Stephen, but I decided whatever, it doesn’t matter. I thought the mix up was just a language thing, by father name he meant surname. Later I met this man named Zelalem and we have been using his son Temasgen as a data collector. We asked for a receipt for what we pay him and he wrote his name Temasgen Zelalem. So that is the way people are named here: your first name and the first name of your father. Pretty interesting.... read more

The other day my companion and I both saw this kid pushing a metal hoop with a stick and we didn’t talk about him until today. She thought it was funny that kids here play with those 1950s type toys and I told her about that playstation 3 commercial, that talks about pushing hoops with sticks. People write into sony and they show the person acting/reading out their letter and they have their spokesperson who responds. Anyways, the kid is like, “help, my grandmother has hijacked my playstation 3 and I cant play it.” The spokesperson says “you should thank your lucky stars you live in the day and age of the playstation, when your grandmother was a girl her fun was pushing a hoop with a stick.” “But.” “With a stick.” “But.” “A STICK!” ... read more

I realized I haven’t really introduced Joseph here, he just kind of appears. Anyways, he is an employee of the hotel we are staying at and his English is pretty good. I really don’t remember how we got to be friends with him, but he really buddy-ed up to us and the coffee group when they were here. He took us to our first man-dancing club. We are not exactly sure how his parents passed, but they are both gone. I think his father died in the military, not sure about his mom, but he is currently staying with his aunt and uncle. Three weeks ago he lost his job. He said one of the guys didn’t like him and made fun of him for not having a mother or father. His job at the hotel ... read more

In the beginning of the film, the Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Humphrey Bogart buys a lotto ticket from a kid on the street. The kid finds him later and tells him he won, and with this new wealth the group is able to finance their mining trip. Lotto tickets are sold in the exact same way here. I will be sitting in a café and kids will come up and try to sell me lotto tickets. It worked for Bogie, maybe I should take a chance.... read more

We started work on Monday, it freakin sucked. I didn’t really want to go. It was raining. It was muddy. We sat around in the clinic pretty much all day. The woman we have as our data collector also works at the clinic and we got maybe 10 surveys on Monday, the busiest day. He she didn’t have time to get all the surveys done and do her job. Most of the women are illiterate so we need someone to read them the survey and mark their responses. The survey is translated from English into both Amharic, the national language, and Oromifan, the local language. We walked back home. In the mud. It sucked. We are working in the immunization clinic and aren’t getting enough mother-child pairs, or at least enough mother-child pairs where the kid ... read more
