Egyptian series: I swam in Aswan -Piprey on wheels Aswan is a tranquil city by the Nile, far away from Cairo making it a splendid destination to taste the authentic Egyptian food and experience Nubian life. After another excellent Egyptian dinner, I woke up early (truth is that I hardly slept) for the big trip to Abu Simbel. A boat rowed us to the mainland and then we started off in a 3-hour convoy through a flat, desert road, south of Aswan through the Sahara desert. At 5 am check point, the police checked our nationalities insisting for some reason on only British and Spanish. The sun winked but we were not to be humored, trying to catch up on our sleep. We stopped at a shanty but tea for 40LE, forget it. When we reached ... read more

Crocodile and other temples of Egypt -Piprey on the wheels My cousin had mentioned as not to be missed and I was determined to see these magnificent ancient temples. I went the Egyptian tourist board at the Luxor train station to book a private car. After a lovely breakfast of Brinjal (Mesaqa'ah), Ful medames (fava beans with olive oil and cumin), ommlette, red hibiscus cold drink and tea, I was picked up in style by a private car. I asked to see the Esna temple but the tourist agency said that it would be de-tour as it was on the other side of Nile. The countryside was simple with some banyan trees, tall kash grass and cultivated in a narrow strip of land by the river. At every checkpoint, the police checked the tourist permits and ... read more

Legends of Luxor -Piprey on wheels Luxor was formerly called Thebes or Waset. It was the capital of the Pharaohs. It encapsulated all the wonderful things of ancient Egypt. A long-distance train from Cairo at 8am to reach Luxor at 8pm, took about 12 hours. With my zero knowledge of Arabic, conversation was impossible. Perhaps, a flight would have been a better idea. The grilled chicken lunch of the train for cost 125 LE and was bland. My co-passenger on the window seat shared his lunch of thin, long baguette with cheese and thin, meat salami which was much tastier and filling. I bought some knick-knacks like hair bands and gave two to the two young sisters playing about in the train. At Luxor, my co-passenger showed me the correct way out to the city center. ... read more

Day 2 in Luxor, with this morning's first stop being the Temple of Karnak... Construction began in the Middle Kingdom (around 2000-1700 BCE) and continued all the way up to the Ptolemaic Kingdom (305-30 BCE) with most of the buildings dating from the New Kingdom (16th-11th century BCE). The temple is huge and is believed to be the second most visited site in Egypt after the Giza Pyramid complex......... Okay, this has been sitting in Saved since March, historical research holding it up for the most part, and I have since travelled to several other places and things are getting backed up...lol...time to move on... So the condensed version of this is: Karnak is cool, probably my favourite temple visited on the trip...the site itself is a maze of temples, statues, carvings and frescoes, with the ... read more

Our time on the Nile had now come to an end as we arrived in Luxor...we disembarked, jumped in our van and were off and running to visit one of the sites I was most looking forward to: Valley of the Kings...the name conjures up all sorts of magical visions; the various tombs, archaeological digs spanning centuries, King Tutankhamun (of course!) and the mysteries surrounding them all, what more could you ask for?? Our first stop en route was the Colossi of Memnon, a site with two massive stone statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III...having stood since 1350 BCE, the twin statues stand guard at the entrance to Amenhotep's memorial temple, which in its day was the largest and most opulent temple complex in Ancient Egypt. The statues contain Roman-era inscriptions in Greek and Latin, dated ... read more

Early start today, in the van at the tender hour of 4:30am and off to today's destination: Abu Simbel...must say I really had no idea what to expect, it seemed excessive to drive four hours to a site with a two hour hang and then four hours back to Aswan, boy was I wrong! The journey started by crossing over the Old (Low) Aswan Dam, arguably one of the most famous dams in the world...built around the turn of the 20th century by the British, it was designed to provide storage of annual floodwater and increase dry season flows for greater irrigation development in the lower Nile...not much to see in the dark but still cool to say I have seen it... As mentioned the drive took about four hours, and while long it was nice ... read more

Made it back safe and sound from Abu Simbel and boarded the boat that would be our home for the next few days as we made our way up the Nile to our final destination of Luxor. Lazy first afternoon, followed by an equally lazy morning before we finally set sail, and after all the idleness of the previous 24 hours I was looking forward to the days only stop: Kom Ombo. The boat itself was pretty cool with four or five levels of rooms, a dining hall, bar/dance room and a rooftop patio complete with bar and small pool. Our room felt more like a hotel room than a cruise boat room which was nice, and with only 150 or so folks on board it never really felt all that crowded...food was good, entertainment was ... read more

After another uneventful drive from Alexandria we were back in Cairo and headed to the train station for the overnight train to Aswan...cool! Was looking forward to this, trains are one of my favourite modes of transportation, an easy and relaxing way to both cover ground and see the countryside...as most of the trip was at night we wouldn't see a whole lot but did have the morning fortunately to catch our first glimpses of the Nile and some greenery after all the desert and sand of the previous couple of days...a good laugh as well, our cabin opened to the one beside us with Bruno and Allan, some funny times...and lo and behold there was my bag waiting for me at the station! With clothing options starting to get a little thin it was a ... read more

Luxor by lunch time, the temperature is in the range of the 45 degrees! So the trick here again is to wake up super early to enjoy a beautiful early morning. We are lucky, most sites around Luxor do open at 6am. This means an early 5am wake up call to be ready by the gate of sites at 6am. Most tourist buses only show up around 7.30am, so we have nearly each day sites just for ourselves. We are spending two nights in Luxor. First day was a train arrival just on time for dinner. We are staying at the Winter Palace run by Sofitel. This is the poorer sister of the Old Catarat in Aswan. One more time, a top upgrade in the third best suite of the house...with a very nice private terrace ... read more

Early wakeup, with bags out by 6.30am as we were off to the airport early to catch our flight home. In the morning we flew from Luxor to Cairo. Then there was a wait to change planes and we flew home to Israel. Egypt-Air provided kosher meals on all the flights. Although the final flight was just over an hour long, the airline had obtained full dinner packs for us kosher passengers compared to the simple sandwich served to others. Unfortunately that meant 40 minutes to warm the food, and insufficient time to eat it. Many people including us brought home whatever we could salvage to eat later. Yesterday on the bus everyone had PCR tests for Covid and all results were negative. But today after landing in Israel, a majority of the group tested positive ... read more
