I woke up this morning with the urge to go to see the tower of Belem today. I was told that the beach Cascais was a short walk from the tower, by my roommate doctor friend. She told me to take the tram and it will drop me off there. So I did a little research and found the train station. Because a tram and a train are the same thing right? No. I bought an all-day metro pass that included the bus and the tram, so I wouldn’t have to do so much walking after yesterday's hike. So I got to the train station ready to use my pass, when it wouldn’t work. I ended up having to buy a separate pass, because even though the train looks the same and goes to the same destination, it is not a tram. Luckily my day pass was only 6 euros. So i bought a return ticket for 4 euros and got on the train to Cascais. Well, Belem ended up not being a stop, so I rode all the way to the final destination. It was only about 30 minutes long, and I found myself at the beach. So I bought
some food for a picnic, and sat on the beach for a while. I ended up falling asleep on the beach (on top of my purse so no one would steal it), getting to relax for a little while. It was actually quite nice. When I was done with the beach, I walked around the town for a little while. I started to get really tired, so I headed back to Lisbon. I walked up the hundred stairs it takes to get up the hill and too my hostel. I relaxed a little and talked with a new girl roommate from New York. I wanted to eat dinner early so I wouldn’t be walking alone in the dark. I found a restaurant by the stairs and sat down. What I ended up realizing was that all of these cheap places I have been eating at have been like their type of fast food. It really explains what my roommates were talking about a "good" dinner. I am still on a budget, and food is food. It was a great view and I ended up talking to two girls from San Diego. For their vacations, they put a lot of places
into a hat, and pick a slip. Whatever place they end up getting out of the hat, is the place they go. It sounded really interesting, and I enjoyed getting to talk to them for a little bit. When it started getting dark, I left and went to my hostel. Once I got there, I found a beautiful view of the city during the night, and a new roommate. I talked to the roommate for a really long time, and by the end of it, I was captivated. He is from Switzerland, took a short vacation to surf in Lisbon. He works at a airport and got this trip for free. (maybe a pilot) He loves to learn languages; He can speak fluent English, Spanish, German, and French with a little bit of Korean. Basically, he is perfect for me. And of course he leaves in the morning. I can see a trip to Switzerland coming in the future. We were cut off talking by the New Yorker wanting to go to sleep. So I blame her for all the things that could have been. But today was definitely a lesson to learn. You never know how long an opportunity
will be in front of you. So here's to what tomorrow will bring.
