We went to a waterfall. It was beautiful. We went to little volcanoes. There were flies. They got on my dad, but not me. We went to a place with a lot of lava rocks. We had lunch there and it was cool. We went to these hot lava. It was bubbling. It was fun. We went to a hot pool to relax and it was fun - Sofia Journal Entry Aug 13.

So after after 2 nights in Akuyeri and breakfast at our favorite bakery, we were off to our next destination - Myvatn. Daddy told me that this would be an area of incredible beauty as he read lots about it in "the book" as I called it (lonely planet). This was not going to be a day of a lot of driving, but instead a lot of sites to stop before reaching our guesthouse.

Our first stop was Godafoss, a beautiful waterfall right off of ring road (highway 1). It was really cool. I especially liked crossing over little stream to get closer to the waterfall. Daddy was a little nervous that I would fall in (no not ending up over the waterfall, but getting pretty wet), but I ended up crossing better than he did. While this waterfall did not compare to the waterfall we saw the first full day in Iceland (Gulfoss) or the ones we we see later, it was still really nice.

Our next stop was less than 1 hour away at the pseuocraters at Skútustaðir on Lake Myvatn. Daddy had heard that there would be a lot of tiny flies around lake Myvatn so he bought these dorky looking mosquito nets that covered our face. They do not bite, but are very annoying. There were tons of these flies as soon as we got out of the car, but I was VERY lucky. They loved daddy but they did not like me. I do not know why or care to know why, but I am just glad they liked daddy. So, daddy kept wearing the net and I was fine without them. I told daddy that they actually did like me and did not like hime and that is why they attacked him.

I called them little volcanos instead of pseudocraters as they looked like little volcanos. We walked around a bit and I laughed at Daddy's funny mosquito net head.

Our next stop was Dimmuborgir. We spent a couple of hours here and had a lot of fun. This was a place with really cool looking lava rock formations. We did a little hike which I did partly by myself and partly on daddy's shoulders. We stopped at this really cool lava rock formation that had a circle and we could see a huge volcano in the background (Hverfjall Crater). We ate our lunch that we packed here and had a lot of fun. We took some fun pictures. Then we continued our hike. We played fun rhyming and guessing games.

We then checked into our guesthouse which was very near to Hverjall crater, Vogahraun Guest House. We had 1 bedroom in a 3 bedroom house which we shared with a couple from Spain and a couple from Italy. They were very nice. A lot of people camped there as well.

We then took off for Námaskarð - fumaroles and mud pits which was less than 30 minute drive. This place was crazy and looked like Mars. It had all these cool red and orange colors. It had fumaroles and mud pits. Sooooooo cooooool. We had a lot of fun here. The fumaroles were very loud. I though they smelled like a mix of doritos and eggs, so I called it dorito eggs.

Our final stop on the day was nearby Myvatn Baths. Another natural bath heated by hot springs and similar to the Blue Lagoon. Some places in the Baths were really hot. We spent about 1 1/2 hours there relaxing before going back to our Guest House and having some really good Pizza at their restaurant.

Sofia's journal entry
Its a really good idea to put Sofia's personal expressions in writing. This shows how she is growing up fast. And I am sure she will read these when she grows up and her own words would make her remember these trips forever :) keep it up Sofia..
